Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
In the present article it is shown that parental cultural capital is a crucial factor in accessing arts education. It is argued that the intergenerational transmission of cultural capital is a mechanism which perpetuates unequal opportunities of participating in arts education from one generation to the other. The contribution builds upon Pierre Bourdieus theory and deduces a differentiated operationalization of cultural capital. Arts education is operationalized in its highbrow and sociocultural facets, that include formal, non-formal and informal settings in all cultural branches. The effects of parental cultural capital on arts activities of the adolescents are investigated analyzing data from the German National Educational Panel Study with structural equation models. It can be shown that receptive highbrow cultural activities are most strongly associated with parental cultural capital, followed by courses outside of school, participation in culture clubs and visiting a school with an artistic profile, while no social disparities can be found for cultural activities in youth centers. The results emphasize the need for further research to point out possibilities to foster equal opportunities in participating in arts education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Prior research has shown that socialization agents such as parents, peers, and teachers can play a significant role in adolescents' educational outcomes, both through direct support or indirectly via supportive attitudes that foster students' bonding to school and academic motivation. However, less is known about the effects of parent and peer supportive attitudes and teacher autonomy support on unfavorable educational outcomes such as school alienation. This study investigated the role of socialization agents in the development of school alienation among 544 secondary school students in Switzerland and 535 secondary school students in Luxembourg in grades 7 to 9. Results of structural equation modeling showed that the role of socialization agents varies across the school alienation domains and educational contexts, with peers having the most substantial impact on all three domains of alienation in both countries. Abstract (english):
aking as its point of departure the rapid expansion in the proportion of students graduating with a university entrance diploma (Abitur) in Germany, this paper adds to research on the mechanisms and effects of academic educational expansion, a worldwide phenomenon in the 20th and 21st century. Drawing on Boudon's theory of primary and secondary effects of social origin, we seek to understand if the educational expansion went along with a decreasing or persisting role of social background. Therefore, we analyze educational inequalities in two respects: first, in the transition from primary school to the academic track (Gymnasium) leading to the Abitur and, second, in the transition to tertiary education after academic upper secondary education. The study is based on two student cohorts (initial N = 13,026 and N = 13,873) who obtained university entrance diplomas in 2005 (cohort 1) and 2011/2012 (cohort 2) in the school system of the federal state of Hamburg (Germany). These cohorts were assessed during secondary education between 1996 (start of cohort 1) and 2012 (end of cohort 2). Employing the KHB decomposition method, we break the total effect of social background down into the relative importance of achievement differentials (primary effects) and educational decisions (secondary effects). Our findings indicate no changes in the total effects of social background and thus suggest that educational inequalities related to social origin persisted in both of the transitions we studied. However, when comparing both cohorts, we noted a clear decrease in secondary effects regarding transitions to the academic secondary track, meaning that achievement-related social differences gained in importance compared to the period before the educational expansion. At the same time, we observed a slight increase in the relative importance of secondary effects for transitions to tertiary education during the expansion. As a further result, our study shows that the rapid expansion of academic upper secondary graduation is mainly the consequence of an increase in the number of Abitur graduates via alternative paths besides the Gymnasium. Abstract (english):
How gender role attitudes develop during adolescence, and how biological, social, and cognitive factors predict this development, remains a matter of debate. This study examines the development of gender role attitudes from early adolescence to emerging adulthood and investigates how the developmental trajectory is affected by sex, socioeconomic status, and cognitive abilities (intelligence). Four waves of the large-scale longitudinal German dataset BIJU between 1991 (grade 7; N = 3828, Mage = 13, SD = 0.61, 53.1% female, 96.4% German nationality), 1995 (grade 10, Mage = 17), 1997 (grade 12, Mage = 19) and 2001/2002 (university/career entry, Mage = 24) were used. Measurement invariance was examined across waves and gender. Latent growth curve models showed that adolescents developed more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Differences between the sexes decreased over time but remained significant. Socioeconomic status seemed less relevant, while adolescents, especially those with lower intelligence scores, developed more egalitarian gender role attitudes during adolescence. The results showed that teenagers developed more open and egalitarian attitudes during adolescence, and that the development trajectories of female and male adolescents converge. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Verl.)

Abstract (english):
What students think about school has a major impact on learning and academic achievement. The multi-domain concept of school alienation distinguishes between alienation from learning, from teachers and from classmates. We aim to study a) alienation patterns among secondary school students, b) how school alienation profiles change from year 7 to year 9 and how secondary school students transition between profiles, and c) the role of teaching style for transitions between school alienation profiles. We draw on panel data of secondary school students from Luxembourg and Switzerland. Results of latent profile/latent transition analyses reveal distinct school alienation profiles, country differences and support for the idea that student-oriented, supportive teaching styles might prevent students from transitioning towards more-highly alienated profiles.

Abstract:
This article reports a study that investigated secondary school students' higher education aspirations (towards university studies, ISCED 6 and above) and how these differ between student groups as well as how these are impacted by values of education. Panel data of more than 300 secondary school students in two countries, Luxembourg and Switzerland (the Swiss Canton of Bern) was analysed. Schools are structured differently in the education systems of Luxembourg and the Swiss Canton of Bern. The results of our analysis show that students in the Luxembourgish sample more often aspire to higher education than in the Swiss sample. Disparities in higher education aspirations were also more pronounced in the Luxembourgish sample, boys and students from families of low socio-economic status (SES) were less likely to aspire to higher education. While the effects of values of education are generally scarce, stimulation in terms of anticipated enjoyment and interest derived from participation in higher education seems to have a positive effect on higher education aspirations. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Secondary education is characterised by a sequence of transitions that are linked to educational inequality. Regarding social background effects, inequalities relate to disparities in educational achievement (primary effects) and educational decisions (secondary effects). In the present study, both primary and secondary effects are analysed based on an entire student cohort in the Hamburg school system (KESS study) across the course of secondary education, i.e. from entering secondary school to aiming for higher education. The KHB method is applied in order to decompose the effects, including transitions to upper secondary education. In line with previous research, total social background effects decrease across educational trajectories. No clear pattern emerges concerning an assumed increase in the relative importance of secondary effects. Primary effects operationalised by school grades are slightly predominant in the transition to lower secondary education, and nearly the same ratio is found for the transition to upper secondary education. However, regarding the aim to enter higher education, the relative importance of secondary effects is more clearly discernible.

Abstract (english):
Starting out from the frequent empirical finding that immigrants exhibit higher educational aspirations than non-immigrants, we analyse the role of immigrants' value of education, i.e. the subjective belief that education is beneficial for one's life, in idealistic and realistic educational aspirations in four distinct institutional settings, comparing Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and England. While the first part of the analyses relates to how immigrants differ from non-immigrants in the value they assign to education, the second part centres on country differences considering immigrant integration policies and education systems as crucial factors. A third part relates to the links between the value of education and educational aspirations to gain some insight into how the value of education may contribute to educational decisions. Analyses are based on longitudinal data of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU). While results show that immigrants assign a higher value to education, the value of education does play a minor role in idealistic and realistic educational aspirations. The results of the country comparison are rather ambivalent, including very weak support for the argument that immigrants strive for education to a higher extent in countries with less favourable conditions.
