Transatlantic dialogue on democracy and justice in education

April 15, 2015. Educational researchers from Germany and the USA will exchange ideas in a seminar held in Chicago. They will thereby link to the topic “Toward Justice” focused by the simultaneously held Annual AERA Meeting.

On April 17, the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) will offer a German-US-American seminar in Chicago. In an interdisciplinary dialogue, researchers from many institutions in Germany and the US will investigate how reform approaches from the late 19th Century were developed further, they will discuss educational concepts focusing on justice and democracy as well as current trends. A focus will be placed on national specificities and possible cross-national comparisons. The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago. It is organised by International Cooperation in Education - ice, a liaison office at DIPF. The event will take on the topic “Toward Justice: Culture, Language and Heritage in Educational Research and Praxis” that is the motto of this year’s Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), which is also held in Chicago, from April 16 to 20.

The seminar is organised into one panel of talks and four workshops with several contributions on the following topics:

  • Factors Influencing Educational (In)Equality, Educational Policies and Educational Praxis
    (Chair: Professor Dr. John Puckett, University of Pennsylvania)
  • School Cultures, Learning Environments and Democracy
    (Chair: Professor Dr. Kenneth Howe, University of Colorado Boulder)
  • Educational (In)Equalities: Learning Achievement and Questions of Leadership in Schools
    (Chair: Professor Dr. Heinrich Mintrop, University of California Berkeley)
  • Assessment, Standards and Equality in Education
    (Chair: Professor Dr. Wolfgang Böttcher, University of Münster)
