The DIPF profile is shaped by two focal areas of activity, i.e. educational information and educational research.
Tasks in the area of educational information are mainly covered by the Information Center for Education and the Libraries for History of Education and Educational Research while tasks in the area of educational research are mainly conducted by the three Centers: Educational Quality and Evaluation, Educational Governance, and Education and Human Development. The five centers co-operate when performing general tasks.

The Frankfurt Research Library (FFB, Frankfurt): The Frankfurt Research Library stocks 200,000 volumes, thus it is one of the most important specialised libraries in the area of educational research.
The Institute currently employs approximately 250 persons working in diverse scientific and non-scientific contexts. The annual budget is approx. 23 million Euros, one-third of it being subject to project funding.
