Educational disparities by nationality and migrant background

A regional and school-type specific analysis of general education schools in the federal states of Germany

Based on official statistical data, the project provides a framework for revealing educational disparities that have so far remained undisclosed owing to insufficient differentiations by citizenship/nationality and migrant backgrounds. The development of participation in education is illustrated in a longitudinal study for the federal states. Amendments to citizenship legislation and their resulting statistical effects on the significance of the criterion of citizenship are analysed in comparison to the migrant background of students. This includes multivariate analyses of the student population by nationality and by migrant background, and their comparison. Regional disparities concerning educational opportunities are analysed by school types and cartographically illustrated. Regional institutional discriminations and segregated school milieus are thus identified. A comprehensive analysis of school leavers in correlation to school types will enable an identification of unequal learning outcomes.
