Reading, writing and arithmetic are basic competencies each child should acquire while attending primary school. Evidently, however, some children find it considerably difficult to acquire these skills. Even when making great efforts to learn, and practising intensively, the achievement levels reached by such children in reading, writing and/or calculating lag persistently behind their general abilities, to a significant extent. Experiencing repeated failure can reduce the children’s joy of learning and their confidence in their own abilities, and thus have an additional negative impact on the children’s difficulties.
The project Kosmos aims to investigate in detail the individual development of children with reading, writing and calculation disorders. We thereby wish to gain insights into the specific causes and effects of these learning disorders. We assess how the difficulties in reading, writing and calculating are perceived by the children themselves, what effects they have on attitudes to school, motivation to learn, emotions and behavior of the affected children. Based on the findings, intervention programmes shall be developed in the future, customised to the specific needs of the children.
