IDeA – project LeA

The LeA project deals with assessing the processes of reading and calculating, and their underlying mechanisms. In this context, LeA focuses on the acceleration of reading and calculating processes. The project is rooted in an approach that was originally studied in Israel. Zvia Breznitz, an Israeli researcher, was able to demonstrate that people make fewer reading mistakes and can better memorise what they have read when they read sentences at a faster pace than they would normally do: she termed this the “acceleration phenomenon“. Zvia Breznitz did not only show that achievement was improved by acceleration, but also that these improvements are particularly evident in people with reading difficulties.
The acceleration phenomenon has hitherto only been assessed for the Hebrew and English languages. The LeA project thus asks if this phenomenon can also be observed in the German language. We moreover intend to investigate whether an acceleration-based improvement in achievement can also be demonstrated for the domain of mathematics.
