Videography and Videology

The aim of the project is to develop a manageable procedure to analyze and interpret videos of importance to educational history that is critical of the sources. The basis for this is the debate on “Panofsky’s pre-iconographic-iconographic-iconological graded interpretational demand” (Imdahl), the serial-iconographic photo-analysis (Mietzner/Pilarczyk), the documentation method (Bohnsack) as well as the discourses on video-analysis and interpretation in media studies and educational sciences.

The intent of the method to be developed is specifically not bent on superficial recognition, even though this is useful especially with regard to outlook, affirmation and verification. Rather, the videos on teaching are ultimately utilized as source of information for researching contemporary history of education, upbringing and socialization.
