Abstract: Background: A potential problem of low-stakes large-scale assessments such as the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is low test-taking engagement. The present study pursued two goals in order to better understand conditioning factors of test-taking disengagement: First, a model-based approach was used to investigate whether item indicators of disengagement constitute a continuous latent person variable by domain. Second, the effects of person and item characteristics were jointly tested using explanatory item response models. Methods: Analyses were based on the Canadian sample of Round 1 of the PIAAC, with N = 26,683 participants completing test items in the domains of literacy, numeracy, and problem solving. Binary item disengagement indicators were created by means of item response time thresholds. Results: The results showed that disengagement indicators define a latent dimension by domain. Disengagement increased with lower educational attainment, lower cognitive skills, and when the test language was not the participant's native language. Gender did not exert any effect on disengagement, while age had a positive effect for problem solving only. An item's location in the second of two assessment modules was positively related to disengagement, as was item difficulty. The latter effect was negatively moderated by cognitive skill, suggesting that poor test-takers are especially likely to disengage with more difficult items. Conclusions: The negative effect of cognitive skill, the positive effect of item difficulty, and their negative interaction effect support the assumption that disengagement is the outcome of individual expectations about success (informed disengagement). Abstract (english): In this study, we investigated how empirical indicators of test-taking engagement can be defined, empirically validated, and used to describe group differences in the context of the Programme of International Assessment of Adult Competences (PIAAC). The approach was to distinguish between disengaged and engaged response behavior by means of response time thresholds. Constant thresholds of 3000 ms and 5000 ms were considered, as well as item-specific thresholds based on the visual inspection of (bimodal) response time distributions (VI method) and the proportion correct conditional on response time (P+>0% method). Overall, the validity checks comparing the proportion correct of engaged and disengaged response behavior by domain and by item showed that the P+>0% method performed slightly better than the VI method and the methods assuming constant thresholds. The results for Literacy and Numeracy by module revealed that there was an increase from Module 1 to Module 2 in the proportion of disengaged responses, suggesting a drop in test-taking engagement. The investigation of country differences in test-taking engagement by domain using the P+>0% method showed that the proportion of responses classified as disengaged was quite low. For Literacy, the proportion was well below 5% for the majority of countries; in Numeracy, the proportion was even smaller than 1% for almost all countries; while for Problem solving, the proportion of disengaged responses was more than 5% but usually well below 10%. There were significant differences in test-taking engagement between countries; the obtained effect sizes were small to medium. Population differences in test-taking engagement were highly correlated between the three domains, suggesting that test-taking engagement can be conceived as a consistent characteristic. Furthermore, there was a clear negative association between test-taking disengagement and proficiency in Literacy, Numeracy and Problem solving, respectively. Finally, subgroup differences for gender, age, educational attainment, and language proved to be insignificant or very small. Results suggest that males tend to be more disengaged, that disengagement increases with age in Problem solving, with lower educational attainment and when the test language is not the same as a testee's native language. Abstract: This study investigates if motivational regulation leads to a successful learning behaviour. As theoretical background served a comprehensive theoretical model of action and learning which broadens the theory of action phases with specific elements of emotional regulation. 205 bachelor students of business administration answered an online questionnaire including 53 students with detailed data on course grades and study-time measure with a daily time-diary over a period of five months. Questionnaire Scales: Perceived Threat, Sensitive Coping, Acceptance of Responsibility, Outcome Expectancy, Self-Efficacy, Persistent Goal Pursuit: Maintenance, Persistent Goal Pursuit: Distraction, Goal Congruent Monitoring, Working with Peers, Generation of Positive Emotions, Effort Avoidance after Negative Emotions, Metacognitive Learning Strategies. In a 2-step-analysis process based on mixed-distribution models, 5 pattern of motivational regulation were identified: Pragmatic Learning Motivation (26%), Strategic Learning Motivation (21%), Threat Oriented Leaning Motivation (20%), Negative Learning Motivation (17%), Self-Determined Learning Motivation (17%). The study-time investment and grades of these 5 student types were as expected with one exception. The students with a negative learning motivation display surprisingly good grades and very high investment of learning time. This might be the result of a selection process and seems to be very simple compensation strategy for amotivation. The Integrated Model of Learning and Action seems very useful to identify different styles of motivational regulation and explaining grades as well as invested learning time.

Abstract: Lernverhalten und Lehrorganisation werden als komplementäre Komponenten einer Lernkultur betrachtet. Auf der Grundlage eines Modells der Lernmotivation wurde das Lernverhalten Studierender mit einer Latenten Klassenanalyse untersucht. Die Gruppenprofile wurden zu Noten und Workload-Daten einer Zeitbudget-Erhebung in Bezug gesetzt. Es zeigte sich, dass nur eine Gruppe Studierender ihren Lernprozess unter herkömmlichen Bedingungen selbstbestimmt erfolgreich gestaltet. Eine andere Lehrorganisation könnte Lernende anderer Typen der Motivationsregulation besser unterstützen.
Abstract (english): Learning behavior and teaching organisation are regarded as complementary components of a learning culture. Using a model of learning motivation, we investigated the learning behavior of students using a latent class analysis. We then matched the group profiles to grades and to workload, as measured by a time-budget analysis. We found that only one group of students operating under conditions typical of traditional teaching organisation was able to regulate their learning behavior sucessfully. An alternative type of teaching organisation may assist groups of students with different profiles much more effectively.

Abstract: Das Integrierte Handlungsmodell von Jürgen Rost und Thomas Martens (1998) verbindet die motivational-emotionale und die kognitive Dynamik der Handlungsregulation miteinander und wurde ursprünglich für die verschiedenen Kontexte des Umwelthandelns konzipiert. Rückblickend betrachtet kann es als universelles Handlungsmodell die Regulationsprozesse in den verschiedensten Handlungskontexten erklären, insbesondere auch Prozesse des Lernens, wenn Lernen als spezielle Handlungsform aufgefasst werden kann. Es wird inbesonderte gezeigt, wie das Handlungsmodell mit den Arbeiten von Julius Kuhl (2000) korrepondiert und erweitert werden kann. Bei der empirischen Überprüfung des Integrierten Handlungsmodells muss der Prozesscharakter des Modells besonders berücksichtigt werden. Bei einer Messung mit Hilfe von Querschnittsdaten müssen also insbesondere verschiedene Prozesszustände statistisch abgebildet werden. Dies kann etwa durch die Verwendung von Mischverteilungsmodellen gesichert werden, die in der Lage sind alle Moderatorhypothesen simultan zu prüfen. Es wird ein Beispiel für die Anwendung des Integrierten Handlungsmodells in dem Bereich "Lernen von Statistik" und den entsprechenden Analysen der empirischen Daten mit Hilfe von Mischverteilungsmodellen berichtet.
