DIPF is the centre for multi-disciplinary, empirical educational research in Germany with about 140 academic staff members.
The Institute relies on expertise from many disciplines. In particular, these are: educational science, psychology, economics, legal science, sociology and political science as well as computer science in education and information management.
Our social and cultural scientific studies focus on educational pathways, educational programmes, and the professionalisation of pedagogical staff. The findings assist politicians and administrators in developing empirically quality and governance concepts. Owing to its human resources, organisational and scientific independence as well as the linkage of research with infrastructure services, DIPF is able to work on and co-ordinate complex permanent tasks as well as multi-disciplinary research tasks and projects. Based on its own research in computer science and information science, DIPF runs and develops science infrastructures that process and document educational information.
Networking with science and praxis is one of the important goals of the institute.
At a national level DIPF closely collaborates with nearly all institutions in the relevant disciplines. It co-operates with partners in other countries and international organisations and it presents its work for worldwide comparison. DIPF actively contributes research to international – particularly European- liaisons and it purposefully collaborates with German and European universities for their mutual benefit.
DIPF makes its research findings available to scientists, policy makers, administrators, educational practitioners and the public at large and in many different ways seeks exchange with the above mentioned target groups. Thereby, DIPF renders a significant contribution to a rational design of the German education system in terms of an “evidence based policy“.
