Association of Internet Portals in the Field of Education
The central aim of this project was to deliver an institutional, technical-administrative and informational integration of the education portals that are subject to public funding, according to aspects of efficiency and sustainable availability of respective services.
The central aim of this project, carried out by remit of the federal government and the federal states (Länder) of Germany, was to deliver an institutional, technical-administrative and informational integration of the education portals that are subject to public funding, according to aspects of efficiency and sustainable availability of respective services.
The realisation of the project was based on the principle of designing an association of portals in terms of an open system with a modula structure, with a high degree of integration and enhancement, serving internet platforms that are heterogeneous regarding their technology and contents. While providing for standardised functionalities and navigation features, the system is to enable the visualisation of different degrees of autonomy and degrees of specialisation regarding the participant portals, by means of a flexible design concept (“design toolbox”).
The Innovation Portal will serve as a core module of the association of portals, and it will be further enhanced by “Projekte Online”, a platform for the long-term storage of materials and publications originating from projects funded by the former Bund-Länder-Kommission für Bildungsplanung und Forschungsförderung (BLK). On the other hand, the platform will host current and future projects funded by the KMK, or conducted across federal states.
Other web portals supported by the German Education Server office, where an integration in terms of technology, content and editorial work seemed appropriate as regards a uniform conceptual strategy, include the metasearch engine “InfoWeb Weiterbildung” (iwwb), for searching adult training courses.
The project was commissioned by the federal government and the Länder states, on the basis of the administration agreement on their cooperation and the therein defined task of associating educational portals under the umbrella of the German Education Server. After the project phase funded by the Federal Ministry of Education (BMBF) and the Standing Conference of Ministries of Cultural Affairs (KMK) expired in late 2008, the task was institutionalised permanently. The association of portals is now re-financed from the DIPF budget.
