Construction and Operation of a Portal for Teacher Training
The portal is intended to assist anyone interested in training as a teacher from the completion of a higher education entry qualification onwards until applying for a post as a teacher.
Prior to beginning a teacher training study course, and while training to become a teacher, the persons who are interested in such a course, and the students respectively, face many decisions. The objective to become a teacher renders decisions necessary with regard to the type of school, and what combination of taught subjects they aim to train for. Moreover, they must find out at what university, and in what federal state, an appropriate qualification can be obtained.
This nation-wide and supra-regional perspective of the target group is currently confronted with a vast amount of information resources on the Internet that is hardly comprehensible. As a consequence of the federal structure of the German education system, information regarding exam regulations, the second phase of teacher training (practical placement at schools), and appointment are specific to the federal states, i.e. they have been issued by the federal ministries of cultural affairs and subordinate institutions. Hence, they refer to particular structures in the states, and they are limited to them. In terms of general questions, and issues relating to the entire Federal Republic of Germany, this disparity of information resources leads to time consuming and elaborate research operations.
Hence, the distinctive informational requirements for orientation and decisions of those interested in teacher training, and the students themselves, are met by informational provisions that are abundant, but lack transparency. A partner portal concerned with “becoming a teacher” is developed within the project framework. It will be implemented as a cross-section service into the structures of the German Education Server. As a collection of informational resources focusing on its users the portal will provide a navigation structure of its own. The portal is intended to assist anyone interested in training as a teacher from the completion of a higher education entry qualification onwards until applying for a post as a teacher. Hence, it will provide information relevant to several stages of teacher training.
Informational collections include the following aspects:
- Vocational orientation and guidance counselling;
- Teacher training courses (subjects, subject combinations);
- change of study/training course;
- change of university/teacher training institution;
- practical placement/practice semester instead of first phase of training;
- exams (first state exam, Bachelor/Master);
- practical training period;
- changing to another federal state during practical teacher training;
- the second degree state exam (how it is conducted);
- initial phase after entering the profession.
“Construction and operation of a subportal for teacher training” is an innovative project within the German Education Server framework.
