Ontology Based Query Expansion – Retrieval Support for the Domain of Educational Research
This doctoral thesis investigates on the use of ontologies and ontological knowledge bases for the generation of query expansion terms. The practical application context is the domain of educational research.
In the context of the Semantic Web, ontologies and comprehensive ontological knowledge bases for different domains are currently being developed. This thesis investigates how such ontologies and knowledge bases can be used as resources for the implementation of query expansion mechanisms in information retrieval systems.
Accordingly, an empirical study is conducted which exemplarily examines a retrieval system for the domain of educational research. As a first step, an ontological knowledge base for the domain of educational research is created on the basis of Semantic Web standards. This knowledge base serves for generating query expansion terms for the search on the document corpus of the German Education Index, an information retrieval system for the domain of educational research. Different methods for the ontology based generation of query expansion terms will then be implemented, and their efficiency is to be evaluated in retrieval and user tests.
This thesis focuses on the following research aims: the comparison of the effectiveness of thesaurus and ontology based query expansion, the evaluation of different ontology based query expansion mechanisms in the pertinent application area, and the identification of ontological relations that are especially useful for generating query expansion terms in the domain of educational research.
