Practices in Higher Education Entry Qualification Exams and Qualification Essays From 1882 to 1972

“Higher education entry qualification exam practices and qualification essays from 1882 to 1972. Knowledge (re)presentation in a historic-practeeological pilot project” (Abiturprüfungspraxis und Abituraufsatz 1882 bis 1972. Wissens(re)präsentation in einem historisch-praxeologischen Pilotprojekt ) successfully competed in “Leibniz Competition 2016” in the funding line for innovative projects and will receive funding for three years.

Project Description

This project aims to render a substantial contribution to a historically relevant question concerning the functions and functionalities of school exams and their changes over time.
A corpus of German essays will be collated from written exam papers. This corpus will be longitudinally analyzed with respect to a period of time that is historically relevant – 1882 until 1972, drawing comparisons across regions. This analysis will not only refer to the given topic but also on what the students actually wrote and how the teachers commented and assessed the papers. A practeological approach is chosen with procedures from eHumanities that are adapted to the project.
The annotated corpus will be made available for re-usage to researchers from different disciplines.
