The project “Technology-Based Web Analysis“ aims to optimise web-analytical findings regarding the use of the German Education Server as well as documenting user operations across all portals. The overall target is to develop an integrated, comprehensive concept for the continuous qualitative analysis of logfiles that encompasses all the Internet portals associated with the German Education Server.
Access data regarding the diverse services and formats of the German Education Server have so far been assessed individually, and in some cases in different formats. While the analysis of logfile servers does in general deliver enlightening quantitative data such as pageviews (access of individual sites) and user sessions it is also subject to significant restrictions regarding its precision, operationability, the control of success regarding Internet services or an empirically valid optimisation of websites. For instance, the data can be distorted by Proxy cache effects, or search engine crawler activities. Despite the large quantity of data registered by the logfiles, detailed information can usually only be evaluated at random.
The project will assess advanced approaches from the area of Web Analytics such as tracking (evaluation of user actions), which allows for eliciting further parameters regarding the adequacy of the web services for the relevant target groups as well as the website’s usability. We moreover need to determine suitable indicators and assessment methods and select and implement an apt software solution.
The project “Technology-Based Web Analysis“ constitutes an innovative project within the framework of the German Education Server.
