• 1977-1981 Teacher at a vocational education and training school, Gutenbergschule in Frankfurt/Main
  
• 1981-1985 Academic staff member for school practical studies at the Institute for vocational education and training pedagogy (TH Darmstadt)
  
• 1985-1986 Secondment to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, federal state of Hesse, and the state education authority in Groß-Gerau
  
• 1986-1996 Held teaching and management positions in vocational education and training schools in Frankfurt and Darmstadt
  
• 1997 Consultant for vocational education and training at the late Joint Federal State Commission of Planning in Education and the Promotion of Research (BLK) in Bonn

Current work and research priorities

• Governance in initial, further and continuing vocational education and training
  
• International comparison of vocational education and training systems paying particular attention to aspects of dual qualification and mobility
  
• Assessment and evaluation of informally acquired competencies in company-related contexts
  
• Development of professional occupations in the media and printing industry
  
• Development of a common instrument for discerning and recognising informal, no-formal and formal learning in interlocking the three phases of teacher training
  
• European dialogue on current challenges and innovative measures in vocational education and training
