Abstract: Die Erforschung der Geschichte des "Vereins für das Deutschtum im Ausland" (VDA) ist für die Zeit der Weimarer Republik noch immer weitgehend ein Desiderat. Zur unerschlossenen Vereinsgeschichte zählte bislang auch die der VDA-Schulgruppen, denen seit Mitte der 1920er Jahre etwa ein Viertel bis ein Drittel der rund 650 000 höheren Schülerinnen und Schüler im Deutschen Reich angehörten. Grundlage der nun vorgelegten Abhandlung zur Arbeit der Schulgruppen des VDA sind vor allem die nach Hinweisen auf die Vereinstätigkeit durchgesehenen rund 2000 in der BBF für den Zeitraum von 1920 bis 1940 für die höheren Schulen von Berlin überlieferten Schuljahrsberichte. Damit konnte allgemeinen Aussagen zur Tätigkeit und Entwicklung der VDA- Schulgruppen, wie sie anderen Quellen, so auch der Presse des Verbandes, zu entnehmen sind, schulkonkret nachgegangen werden. In der Abhandlung werden Organisation, Mitgliederbewegung und Aktivitäten der Gruppen sowohl im Kräftefeld deutscher bzw. preußischer Schulpolitik als auch der jeweiligen Bezie-hungen an den Einzelschulen dargestellt. Über Berlin hinaus biographisch verortet werden konnte der für die Schulgruppenarbeit verantwortliche Personenkreis. Es wird sichtbar, wie der VDA in der Weimarer Zeit die Schule mit jenem Teil der politischen Öffentlichkeit verband, der Ideen des nationalen Ausgleichs fern stand. Für die Zeit ab 1933 ist anhand der Schulgruppenarbeit des VDA belegbar, dass nationalistische Bildung und Erziehung an deutschen Schulen für den Nationalsozialismus, der sie radi-kalisierte und rassenideologisch untersetzte, anschlussfähig war.
Abstract (english): The research of the history of the "Association for German Culture Abroad" (VDA) is still mainly a desideratum for the period of the Weimar Republic. The VDA school groups also count as part of the untapped history of the Association, to which around a quarter to a third of the approximately 650,000 higher pupils in the German Empire belonged from the middle of the 1920's. The basis of the paper now presented on the work of the school groups of the VDA isabove all the approximately 2000 handed down school year reports which point out the activities of the Association in the BBF for the period from 1920 to 1940 for the higher schools in Berlin. Using those, it was possible to investigate general statements on the activities and development of VDA school groups - that had been described in other sources like the Association press - for specific schools. In the paper, organisations, member movements and activities of the groups are described within the fields of power of German or Prussian school policy as well as the prevailing relationships at the individual schools. The persons re-sponsible for the school group work could be biographically located in Berlin and beyond. It becomes clear how the VDA, in the Weimar period, connected the school with the part of the political public that was not in favour of the ideas of a national settlement. Using the school group work of the VDA, it was possible to prove for the time after 1933, that the nationalistic education and training at German schools was used by the National Socialism that had radicalised and idealised race.
