Abstract (english): Contextualising comparative education in the regional framework of Europe cogently leads to the basic structural principle that has determined the mainstream of European history since the Middle Ages between diversity and unity. This theme is explored by setting the focus on the history of the discipline in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the criteria characterising its modern state and trend: the "European map" with its national and regional particularities, the academic associations, the modern main shifts of theory paradigm, the space as an essential structural criterion, and the policy-orientation of the discipline. The article ends up with the outline of four main perspectives dealing with the extension of comparative education in geographical terms, the interrelation between nation and culture in its meaning for research and teaching, the academic debate and practice of the discipline in the science system, and the European dimension in comparative education.(DIPF/Autor)
