Abstract:
As knowledge derived from scientific theory can be helpful for teachers to reflect on their everyday teaching, universities have the challenging task of teaching this knowledge in such a way that pre-service teachers are able to apply it to their later teaching. Case-based learning has emerged as a promising method to foster pre-service teachers' scientific knowledge application throughout university teacher education. However, surprisingly, empirical evidence for its effectiveness as compared to more traditional instructional interventions in teacher education is still inconclusive, partly being due to constraints concerning the employed comparison groups. The present quasi-experimental study (conducted in the field of classroom management) investigated the effect of studying exactly the same theoretical content with and without text-based cases on scientific knowledge application (as measured by a vignette test) in a sample of 101 pre-service teachers. Although the study found a small advantage for the case-based learning group, it demonstrated that scientific knowledge application may also be effectively fostered in a more traditional instructional course. The findings and their implications are discussed against the background of cognitive theories on inert knowledge and how to prevent it in teacher education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The construction-of-understanding ecosystem proves particularly useful because it provides an actionable framework of active learning that can be applied across disciplines. An assumption inherent in the framework is that active-learning practices are beneficial for student achievement in STEM. In this commentary, I have argued that there are prerequisites for this benefit to occur. Active-learning practices are demanding in that students need advanced cognitive and metacognitive capacities to be able to profit from them without being closely guided. The effects of insufficient cognitive and metacognitive capacities become most visible in younger students for whom these capacities are still developing. For example, elementary-school students struggle with constructing examples or drawings of abstract concepts as a result of their immature analogical reasoning skills (Breitwieser & Brod, 2021; Van Meter et al., 2006). This should not be taken to mean that active-learning practices cannot be beneficial for K-12 students, however. Prerequisites differ between practices, and a lack of them can often be counteracted with additional guidance. Instead, this commentary is intended as a pledge to consider prerequisites in order to choose those active-learning practices that are likely to work best for a particular group of students. Abstract:
The goal of the present study was to investigate how course instruction and individual differences in general academic competences and conscientiousness relate to students' learning strategy use and exam performance. The sample comprised two cohorts of university students who attended a lecture on the same topic, but with varying course instruction: In the blended course (N = 238), the teacher applied deadlines for self-testing and offered regular in-class meetings to encourage distributed practice over the semester. In the online course, students studied independently without regular meetings, nor deadlines (N = 200). Learning strategies were measured objectively using behavioral log-file data. Students in the blended course used fewer self-tests than online students which was associated with poor exam performance. Academic competences (high school GPA) positively predicted exam performance via more distributed practice and self-testing. Conscientiousness was related to more distributed practice which was associated with better exam performance. Results revealed that (voluntary) in-class meeting and deadlines did not prevent cramming. Especially less conscientious students with lower general academic competences need further support in applying efficient learning strategies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Self-regulation of learning (SRL) positively affects achievement and motivation. Therefore, teachers are supposed to foster students' SRL by providing them with strategies. However, two preconditions have to be met: teachers need to diagnose their students' SRL to take instructional decisions about promoting SRL. To this end, teachers need knowledge about SRL to know what to diagnose. Only little research has investigated teachers' knowledge about SRL and its assessment yet. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify teachers' conceptions about SRL, to investigate their ideas about how to diagnose their students' SRL, and to test relationships between both. To this end, we developed two systematic coding schemes to analyze the conceptions about SRL and the ideas about assessing SRL in the classroom among a sample of 205 teachers. The coding schemes for teachers' open answers were developed based on models about SRL and were extended by deriving codes from the empirical data and produced satisfactory interrater reliability (conceptions about SRL: κ = 0.85, SE = 0.03; ideas about assessing SRL: κ = 0.63, SE = 0.05). The results showed that many teachers did not refer to any regulation procedure at all and described SRL mainly as student autonomy and self-directedness. Only few teachers had a comprehensive conception of the entire SRL cycle. We identified three patterns of teachers' conceptualizations of SRL: a motivation-oriented, an autonomy-oriented, and a regulation-oriented conceptualization of SRL. Regarding teachers' ideas about assessing their students' SRL, teachers mainly focused on cues that are not diagnostic of SRL. Yet, many teachers knew about portfolios to register SRL among students. Finally, our results suggest that, partly, teachers' ideas about assessing SRL varied as a function of their SRL concept: teachers with an autonomy-oriented conceptualization of SRL were more likely to use cues that are not diagnostic of SRL, such as unsystematic observation or off-task behavior. The results provide insights into teachers' conceptions of SRL and of its assessment. Implications for future research in the field of SRL will be drawn, in particular about how to support teachers in diagnosing and fostering SR among their students.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This study analyses students' self-reported acceptance or rejection of offers for Turkish-German bilingual interactions within the context of a peer-learning intervention. Bilingual trainers explicitly provided repeated opportunities to communicate bilingually (e. g., they talked Turkish during the training). Bilingual speakers of Turkish and German (N = 37) in grades three and four were asked answered in the middle and at the end of an eight-week peer-learning intervention whether they used Turkish during the sessions. The students' reported reasons for their language choice were analyzed using content-analysis (Mayring, 2015). At both measurement points, students reported more acceptances of language offers than rejections. The given reasons referred primarily to the individuals themselves (e. g., their language competencies, task-solving competencies, emotions and attitudes). Peers and trainers played a minor role, while the context, an intervention study, was only an argument for acceptance of bilingual interactions, not for rejection. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
A cognitive and a guidance dimension can describe the support of students' conceptual understanding in inquiry-based science education. The role of guidance for student learning has been intensively discussed. Furthermore, inquiry learning may pose particular challenges to students with low language proficiency. The present intervention in primary school (54 teachers, 1,070 students) aimed to examine the effects of additional guidance. Therefore, the control group uses a science unit mainly addressing the cognitive dimension of inquiry. In the 3 treatment groups, this unit was enriched with guidance through scaffolding instructional discourse, formative assessment, or peer-assisted learning. The results (43 teachers, 873 students) confirm that in each intervention condition, students' conceptual understanding significantly improves. In the formative assessment group, students' mean conceptual understanding is higher than in the control group. Moreover, formative assessment and scaffolding instructional discourse provided particular support to the conceptual understanding of students with poor language proficiency. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Teaching learning strategies is one important aspect of the consistently claimed promotion of self-regulated learning in classrooms. This study investigated the role of instructional context and teacher beliefs for teachers' promotion of learning strategies. Twenty mathematics teachers were videotaped for five lessons in the ninth grade. Three lessons on the Pythagorean Theorem (introductory unit) and two lessons on word problems (practice unit) represented the two different instructional contexts. An observation instrument was used to code the teachers' promotion of cognitive strategies (organization, elaboration) and metacognitive strategies (planning, monitoring and evaluation). Teacher beliefs were captured by questionnaire. Results show a tendency to teach cognitive strategies more in introductory lessons compared to practice lessons, while planning strategies are more often taught in practice lessons. Regarding teacher beliefs, traditional beliefs (e.g., a formalist view of mathematics) were negatively related to the promotion of some types of strategies (e.g., elaboration), while progressive beliefs (e.g., emphasis on an individual reference norm) were positively associated with teaching several strategy types (e.g., monitoring and evaluation). Thus, teacher beliefs seem to play a role for strategy teaching, which makes them a possible starting point for enhancing the promotion of self-regulated learning and a potential key factor in teacher training. Abstract:

Abstract (english):
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-evaluative standards and graphed feedback on calibration accuracy and performance in mathematics. Specifically, we explored the influence of mastery learning standards as opposed to social comparison standards as well as of individual feedback as opposed to social comparison feedback. 90 fifth grade students were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. We conducted analyses for both the complete sample and an at- risk group of low performing students who overestimate their skills. Self- evaluative standards had no effect on calibration accuracy and performance. Students who received feedback were more accurate in their self-evaluative judgements than students who received neither type of feedback. In overconfident students, feedback additionally increased prediction accuracy and, albeit marginally, performance. We discuss the educational implications of our findings with respect to the relevance of standards and feedback for promoting self-regulated learning within regular classroom settings. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Based on a coding of 39 videotaped three-lesson units on the introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem, three teaching patterns were identified: lecturing, developing based on a problem, and discovery based on a problem. The analysis showed no effect of the teaching patterns on student achievement, whereas effects were discovered on students' perceived learning quality. The discovery teaching pattern had negative effects on the emotional quality of learning. However, this pattern exhibited high degree of externally rated cognitive activation. The lecturing approach to the introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem supported students' self- perceived understanding. (DIPF/Orig.)
