Abstract:
In this study, we analyzed how secondary school tracking relates to students' self-beliefs (i.e., their academic self-concepts in different domains and their beliefs regarding their labor market chances) and school disengagement during a time period that has received little attention in educational psychological research on tracking: when students are at the end of schooling and on the verge of entering the labor market. In doing so, we disentangled 2 distinguishing features of tracking: tracks as social contexts(operationalized via track level and the mean achievement of students' schoolmates) and tracks as pathways to different future opportunities (operationalized via educational certificates). Using questionnaire, achievement, and administrative school data from 2,155 students from 29 low-track schools, 23 intermediate-track schools, and 35 comprehensive schools in Berlin, Germany, we found educational certificates to be the most important factor shaping students' self-beliefs and school disengagement. Irrespective of their individual achievement, their schoolmates' achievement, and their track level, students who received the intermediate school-leaving certificate had higher academic self-concepts, believed that their certificate would give them better chances of success in the labor market, and were less disengaged from school than students who received the low school-leaving certificate. In contrast, students' track level did not serve as a predictor for the outcomes considered. The achievement of students' schoolmates (i.e., the big-fish-little-pond effect) was only relevant for students' academic self-concepts and not for students' self-beliefs regarding labor market entry or their school disengagement. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Many studies have shown that in recent years, the fear of falling has increased in the German middle class. In this paper, it will be investigated how these worries have developed over an extended period of 30 years. A longitudinal analysis will be carried out using data gathered from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) between the years 1984 and 2014. We analyze fears of job loss indicating the fear of falling from a maximum of 49,102 people in work (comprising 286,049 observations). The descriptive trend analyses and random effects ordered probit-regressions followed by a marginsplot reveal that from the beginning of the observation period up to the year 2005, the fear of job loss had risen in all social classes, but was at its strongest for the central middle class. For the period between 2006 and 2014, however, the fear of falling reduced significantly in all classes. Despite the European economic crisis in 2009, the level of fears in almost all classes at the end of the observation period in 2014 was at the same low-point as in 1991. During this period the level of fear reduced at its greatest rate in the central middle class in comparison to all other classes. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english):
Worldwide, students' health and subjective well-being increasingly are regarded as important. One central noncognitive aspect that threatens students' well-being and that is related to students' socioeconomic background is whether they feel they belong to their social context (e.g., school) or instead feel socially ostracized. The present study investigated the relation between parents' education and students' sense of belonging to school and the role of students' and parents' attitudes toward school as mediators across different countries. The results indicate that students whose parents have a higher education level feel less socially excluded. As expected, students' attitude functions as a mediator: The more educated the students' parents, the more positive the students' attitudes toward school. Likewise, the more positive their attitude, the stronger they indicated a feeling of social belonging and the less they indicated feeling socially excluded. Further, more individualistic countries show a weaker effect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In Germany, demographic change has had far-reaching effects regarding the education system. Particularly in rural, non-urban areas, the existing netwwork of schools is at risk - most of all, this concerns vocational education and training schools. Even more striking, however, are the consequences regarding the qualification of young people because a generation of "baby boomers" needs to be replaced by a low-birthrate generation while at the same time the labour market demands higher qualification levels. Moreover, a growing number of students are from immigrant backgrounds and/or from disadvantaged families: they represent the potential that would still allow for increases in qualification levels. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Educational researchers are often confronted with the problem of nonresponse in empirical studies. For studies in the social sciences it is shown that specific administrative strategies can raise the response rate. These possibilities have been rarely investigated in educational studies. The present study investigates the strategies of using incentives and reminders in a large-scale questionnaire study of the parents of N=3935 6th grade students in Berlin. The results show a positive effect of lotteries and reminders on the response rate of the parents. Furthermore there is some evidence to suggest that these strategies may be successful in involving those parents who can be characterized as higher-risk nonrespondents.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Org.)
