Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This paper explores the question, whether and to what extent the participation in extracurricular activities at all-day schools has an impact on students development of problem behavior and GPA (grade point average) from grade 5 to grade 9. The rationale refers to US studies on the positive effects of participation in extracurricular school activities and after-school programs, respectively. Based on the result that positive effects of extracurricular participation on social behavior are found regularly whereas results concerning school achievement (GPA) are heterogeneous, one can assume that participation has an indirect positive effect on the development of school achievement (GPA) mediated by the improvement of problem behavior. The analyses are based on longitudinal data of the study on the development of all-day schools in Germany (StEG). The sample consists of 6.551 students from 210 all-day schools who participated in the study from grade 5 to grade 9 at three measure times. The hypotheses are tested by using latent growth curve analyses (LGCA). Results show a significant decrease of GPA and a significant increase of problem behavior from grade 5 to grade 9. Participation in extracurricular activities has a direct effect on the improvement of problem behavior, as well as an indirect effect on GPA indicated by the positive covariance between the development of social behavior and GPA. The results are discussed in the light of the development of all-day schools in Germany, considering the limitations of the study (StEG).

Abstract:
Was erfassen die an unseren Schulen vergebenen Noten?

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In the third and fourth grade level in primary school, teacher-assigned grades are typically used to evaluate student achievement. While students language achievement is frequently judged by several grades for different aspects of linguistic proficiency, mathematics achievement is typically summarized by one single grade. The content of primary school mathematics instruction on the one hand refers to the areas of arithmetic, geometry, and applied problems (often as word problems). On the other hand, since the school year 2005/06, mathematics instruction has to be based explicitly on the general and content-related competencies of the KMK educational standards. Given that grading is supposed to be related to the actual content of instruction, the competencies in each of these specific areas should be reflected in the mathematics grade. The development of mathematical tasks in the project Vergleichsarbeiten in der Grundschule (VERA) along the content areas arithmetic, geometry, and applied problems as well as the content-related competencies of the educational standards enables the assessment of domain-specific competencies. Based on a sample from seven German federal states (N = 6415), we examined to which extent report card grades for mathematics in the third and fourth grade level are associated with these various domain-specific competencies. A key result is that the relative predictive value of students skills for the prediction of mathematics grades differs noticeably between the different content areas and also between the two grade levels. Based on multiple regression models, we found that grades especially in the fourth grade reflect to a large extent the achievement in arithmetic and only to a very small extent the achievement in geometry. Concerning the content-related skills of the KMK standards, the results showed strong relationships of grades with achievement in the area Zahlen und Operationen (numbers and operations), and weak relationships with the areas Raum und Form (space and form) as well as Daten, Häufigkeit und Wahrscheinlichkeit (data, frequency, and probability).

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Teachers' practices of student evaluation can be considered crucial to the implementation of embedded assessment systems. This article reports on two studies investigating these practices in detail. The first study examines teacher judgments about student achievement in terms of the grades awarded. It examines whether the grades awarded reflect two dimensions of students' achievement as well as learning behavior. It also explores whether teachers' grading is aligned with their instruction. In the second study, we analyze how teacher evaluation affects students' subsequent learning processes. This study utilizes feedback given to students by the teacher within classroom interaction as an indicator for student evaluation, and investigates the impact of two types of feedback, evaluative and informational, on student learning and motivation. The results of Study 1 show that both the dimensions of student achievement as well as involvement were found to contribute substantially to students' grades. Moreover, these contributions depended on teacher beliefs and instructional quality. The findings of Study 2 show that positive evaluative feedback in the classroom was associated with increased intrinsic motivation, whereas negative evaluative feedback was not related to motivation. Informational feedback was shown to foster motivation via emotional experience and cognitive processing. None of the feedback types examined had a significant impact on students' achievement development. Finally, implications of the two studies for the implementation of embedded classroom assessment and the investigation of its effects are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)
