Abstract: The internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model assumes the interplay of social and dimensional comparisons in the formation of domain-specific academic self-concepts. The present study tests the generalizability of the I/E model assumptions across students from different ability tracks. While the findings from previous studies implied the similar use of social comparisons with students from different ability tracks, evidence has been missing so far whether students from different ability tracks apply dimensional comparisons to the same extent. Students from lower ability tracks are said to be confronted with negative stereotypes and felt deprivation which might enforce or weaken the use of dimensional comparisons. For the analyses, students from the academic track (N = 702) and the vocational track (N = 528) of German secondary schools were included as these two groups represent two extreme groups of ability tracks which might thus maximize the power of detecting differences in the use of social and dimensional comparisons. Both the original I/E model only including math and verbal achievement and self-concepts measures and an I/E model extended to five school subjects (math, German, English, physics, and biology) were examined. The results indicated invariance across school tracks for both the original I/E model and the extended I/E model when controlling for students' gender, socioeconomic status, and cognitive ability. Abstract: Students evaluate their achievement in a specific domain in relation to their achievement in other domains and form their self-concepts accordingly. These comparison processes have been termed dimensional comparisons and shown to be an important source of academic self-concepts in addition to social and temporal comparisons. Research on the internal/external frame of reference model (I/E model) has frequently found negative effects of students' achievement on their academic self-concept between different scholastic domains (mathematics and the language of instruction) that are interpreted as contrast effects of dimensional comparisons. There is mixed evidence with regard to whether negative contrast effects or positive assimilation effects occur when students compare their achievement in domains that are more similar. In this study, we extended the original I/E model with 3 science domains (biology, chemistry, and physics). Using structural equation modeling, we analyzed the domain-specific self-concepts, grades, and test scores of a representative sample of 9th-grade students in Germany (N = 20,050) across 5 domains. Mathematics, physics, and chemistry showed contrast effects to German, whereas small assimilation effects were found between mathematics, physics, and chemistry. This effect pattern was present for both grades and test scores. Achievement in mathematics and the language of instruction affected self-concepts in the sciences, whereas achievement in the sciences had no effect on self-concepts in other subjects. The results support the hypotheses derived from dimensional comparison theory that both contrast and assimilation effects can result from dimensional comparisons and that the 3 science subjects are affected differentially by these comparisons. Abstract: Die Kompetenz, Modelle als Mittel der Veranschaulichung und als Mittel der Erkenntnisgewinnung wahrzunehmen und einzusetzen, ist ein zentraler Bestandteil eines elaborierten Wissenschaftsverständnisses und der naturwissenschaftlichen Grundbildung (scientific literacy). Empirische Studien über Modelle und über den Modellbildungsprozess zeigen, dass Schülerinnen und Schüler Modelle vorwiegend als Mittel der Veranschaulichung verstehen und somit eine mediale Sichtweise auf Modelle einnehmen. Das Potenzial von Modellen, als Mediatoren zu fungieren, die zwischen Theorie und Phänomen vermitteln, damit sich neue Erkenntnisse über Phänomene gewinnen lassen (methodische Sichtweise), wird bislang nicht umfassend wahrgenommen. Bei der Entwicklung einer medialen und methodischen Sichtweise auf Mo-delle helfen Kompetenzmodelle, die das entsprechende Konstrukt strukturieren und graduieren. Diese Kompetenzmodelle dienen Lehrkräften als Referenzrahmen für die Entwicklung von Fördermaßnahmen. Upmeier zu Belzen und Krüger (2010) entwickelten ein theoretisch begründetes Kompetenzmodell der Modellkompetenz, das die empirischen Befunde und die wissenschaftstheoretische Literatur zu Modellen integriert. Es ist in fünf Teilkompetenzen - Eigenschaften von Modellen, Alternative Modelle, Zweck von Modellen, Testen von Modellen und Ändern von Modellen - strukturiert und graduiert diese Teilkompetenzen in jeweils drei Niveaus. Eine empirische Überprüfung dieser Strukturierung und Graduierung steht jedoch aus. Auf der Basis einer solchen Überprüfung lässt sich beurteilen, inwiefern das Kompetenzmodell die Perspektiven von Lernenden angemessen reflektiert. Ergänzend dazu ermöglicht es Lehrkräften eine evidenzbasierte Entwicklung von Fördermaßnahmen. Dementsprechend stehen in der vorliegenden Arbeit die Operationalisierung des Kompetenzmodells der Modellkompetenz mit Aufgaben im offenen Antwortformat und, darauf aufbauend, die Analyse und Beschreibung der Modellkompetenz von Schülerinnen und Schülern der Sekundarstufe I im Mittelpunkt. Auf dieser Grundlage wurden didaktische Anregungen für einen (modell-)kompetenzorientierten Unterricht aus den empirischen Analysen abgeleitet. Das Ziel, die Modellkompetenz der Lernenden zu analysieren und zu beschreiben, kann mit Aufgaben im offenen Antwortformat erreicht werden, deren Antworten valide als Indikatoren von Modellkompetenz interpretiert werden können. Deshalb erfolgte eine systematische und theoriegeleitete Operationalisierung, welche die Kriterien der Verständlichkeit und der Plausibilität des Aufgabenstamms, des Bezugs zur jeweiligen Teilkompetenz und der Repräsentation des Spektrums der jeweiligen Teilkompetenz berück-sichtigte. Für die fünf Teilkompetenzen wurden insgesamt 40 Aufgaben entwickelt. Diese wurden zunächst mit sieben Expertinnen und Experten der Didaktik der Biologie nach den genannten Kriterien diskutiert und in zwei Teilstudien mit zusammen N = 1 231 Schülerinnen und Schülern erprobt. Die Antworten und Kommentare der Lernenden wurden mit der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Darüber hinaus dienten beide Teilstudien dazu, Kodierleitfäden für die einzelnen Teilkompetenzen zu entwickeln, die neben Hinweisen zur Kodierung auch ein Kategoriensystem pro Teilkompetenz umfassen. Diese Kategorien fassen ähnliche Perspektiven der Lernenden auf Modelle und auf den Modellbildungsprozess zusammen. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen zeigten, dass insgesamt fünfzehn Aufgaben im offenen Antwortformat (drei Aufgaben pro Teilkompetenz) die oben genannten Kriterien erfüllen und daher als Indikatoren von Modellkompetenz interpretierbar sind. Diese Aufgaben nehmen die kognitive Komponente von Modellkompetenz in den Blick und eignen sich dazu, verschiedene Perspektiven von Schülerinnen und Schülern auf Modelle und auf den Modellbildungsprozess zu erfassen. Somit können diese Aufgaben zur Überprüfung der inhaltlichen Struktur des Kompetenzmodells herangezogen werden. Für die Analyse und Beschreibung von Modellkompetenz wurde eine Quer-schnittsstudie mit N = 1 177 Schülerinnen und Schülern der siebten bis zehnten Jahrgangsstufe durchgeführt. Die so gewonnenen Daten wurden ebenfalls mit der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet, die Aufschluss über die Perspektiven der Lernenden auf Modelle und auf den Modellbildungsprozess gibt. Darauf aufbauend wurde geprüft, inwieweit das Kompetenzmodell der Modellkompetenz diese Perspektiven hinreichend beschreibt. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass für die Teilkompetenzen Alternative Modelle (nur ein Modell eines Originals), Testen von Modellen (Keine Testung des Modells) und Ändern von Modellen (Keine Änderung des Modells) empfohlen wird, ein zusätzliches basales Niveau zu berücksichtigen. Mit den Teilkompetenzen Eigenschaften von Modellen und Zweck von Modellen hingegen werden die Perspektiven der Lernenden umfassend beschrieben. Ergänzend dazu wurde anhand dieser Daten untersucht, ob sich bei den Lernenden dieser Stichprobe Besonderheiten in den Antwortstrukturen identifizieren ließen, um ein vertieftes Verständnis der Sichtweisen von Lernenden auf Modelle zu erhalten. Im Hinblick darauf konnten bei den Schülerinnen und Schülern dieser Stichprobe didaktisch orientierte Perspektiven (Verständlichkeit/Kommunizierbarkeit und Zugänglichkeit) identifiziert werden, die sich über alle fünf Teilkompetenzen und eine mediale und methodische Perspektive (bzw. Niveaus) erstrecken. Weiterhin zeigten die Befunde, dass bei Lernenden zwischen einem abstrakten und einem konkreten Modellverständnis unterschieden werden kann und dass das Parallelisieren von Modell und Original in den Teilkompetenzen Testen von Modellen und Ändern von Modellen zentral ist. In Bezug auf das Parallelisieren war auffällig, dass die Lernenden dies zum Teil ohne Berücksichtigung des Zwecks vornahmen. Gerade die Zweckgebundenheit spielt jedoch bei der Konstruktion von Modellen eine große Rolle und sollte beachtet werden. Über diese Analysen hinaus wurde geprüft, inwieweit der entwickelte Leis-tungstest auch in einem probabilistischen Ansatz einsetzbar ist. Dies ist insbesondere im Hinblick auf Projekte zur längsschnittlichen Entwicklung von Modellkompetenz bei Schülerinnen und Schülern sinnvoll, die mit dem hier entwickelten Leistungstest einen solchen Ansatz verfolgen. Für die Prüfung wurde im Rahmen der Item-Response-Theorie ein ordinales, mehrdimensionales Rasch-Modell, und zwar das Partial-Credit-Modell, verwendet. Es ist festzuhalten, dass ein Einsatz in einem probabilistischen Ansatz möglich ist, wenn weitere Aufgaben entwickelt werden oder der Test mit anderen Tests zur Modellkompetenz kombiniert wird. Auf diese Weise lässt sich das Fähigkeitsspektrum optimal abdecken. Die Befunde der Analysen weisen zudem darauf hin, dass die Graduierung insbesondere hinsichtlich der Teilkompetenzen Testen von Modellen und Ändern von Modellen zu diskutieren ist. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Research in the field of students' understandings of models and their use in science describes different frameworks concerning these understandings. Currently, there is no conjoint framework that combines these structures and so far, no investigation has focused on whether it reflects students' understandings sufficiently (empirical evaluation). Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present the results of an empirical evaluation of a conjoint theoretical framework. The theoretical framework integrates relevant research findings and comprises five aspects which are subdivided into three levels each: nature of models, multiple models, purpose of models, testing, and changing models. The study was conducted with a sample of 1,177 seventh to tenth graders (aged 11-19 years) using open-ended items. The data were analysed by identifying students' understandings of models (nature of models and multiple models) and their use in science (purpose of models, testing, and changing models), and comparing as well as assigning them to the content of the theoretical framework. A comprehensive category system of students' understandings was thus developed. Regarding the empirical evaluation, the students' understandings of the nature and the purpose of models were sufficiently described by the theoretical framework. Concerning the understandings of multiple, testing, and changing models, additional initial understandings (only one model possible, no testing of models, and no change of models) need to be considered. This conjoint and now empirically tested framework for students' understandings can provide a common basis for future science education research. Furthermore, evidence-based indications can be provided for teachers and their instructional practice.

Abstract: In den letzten Jahren wurden in zahlreichen Bundesländern die als Kernbereiche des Gymnasiums betrachteten Fächer (Deutsch, Mathematik, Fremdsprache) sowie teilweise die naturwissenschaftlichen Fächer gestärkt. Dazu wurden in entsprechenden Reformen die Wahlmöglichkeiten bezüglich der Kursbelegung sowie der Prüfungsfächer eingeschränkt. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht Konsequenzen der Oberstufenreform in Sachsen auf den Unterrichtsumfang sowie die Leistungen in den Fächern Mathematik, Englisch und den Naturwissenschaften. Erwartungsgemäß zeigten sich aufgrund der reformbedingten durchgängigen Belegverpflichtung im Bereich der Naturwissenschaften in den Fächern Physik und Chemie substanzielle Anstiege des Leistungsniveaus. Zudem kam es in den Fächern Chemie und Biologie zu einer Abnahme der Leistungsheterogenität. Die Reformeffekte auf das durchschnittliche Leistungsniveau waren dabei im Wesentlichen mit unterschiedlichen Kursbelegungsquoten (Anteile Grundkurs, Leistungskurs, abgewählt) assoziiert, wobei sich das kurs(niveau)spezifische Leistungsniveau als weitgehend unabhängig von der schulischen Lernzeit erwies. Für die Fachleistungen in Mathematik und Englisch ergaben sich keine Veränderungen im Hinblick auf das durchschnittliche Niveau sowie die Leistungsstreuung. (DIPF/Org.)
Abstract (english): Over the last few years, German federal states have increasingly emphasized and strengthened the subjects regarded as core domains of the Gymnasium (the academic school track), including German, mathematics, foreign languages and, to some extent, science subjects (biology, chemistry, physics) by reducing the number of course and examination options through specific educational reforms. The present study investigates consequences of the reform of upper secondary schooling in the federal state of Saxony on the learning time allocated to subjects and on achievement in the domains of mathematics, English and natural sciences. As expected, the mandatory course selection of science subjects introduced through the reform led to substantially higher achievement levels in physics and chemistry. Moreover, disparities in achievement in the subjects of chemistry and biology were reduced. The reform effects on average achievement levels were strongly associated with course level choices (basic course, advanced course, drop out). Achievement rates relating to course level were, however, largely independent of the amount of allocated learning time. No changes were observed with regard to achievement levels and disparities in mathematics and English. (DIPF/Org.)

Auch im beruflichen Arbeitsfeld können diese Formen des Wissensaustauschs relevant sein und für viele verschiedene Informationsbedarfe eine Informationsquelle mit expertengeneriertem Wissen und praxisrelevanter Information darstellen z.B. in Form einer berufsspezifischen Online-Community. Webbasierte Portale dienen auch in traditionell stärker individuell geprägten Arbeitsbereichen wie der Unterrichtsvorbereitung von Lehrerinnen und Lehrern als geeignete Informationsquellen, die von der in dieser Suchumgebung einzigartigen Mischung aus handlungsrelevanter Information, fachkundig erteilten Empfehlungen und Erfahrungswissen profitieren. In dieser Studie werden bereitgestellte Unterrichtsentwürfe, Unterrichtsmaterialien und Diskussionsforen in den Fächern Biologie und Geschichte in einem von Lehrpersonen selbst organisierten Onlineportal inhaltlich analysiert. Auch wird untersucht, für welche berufsbezogenen Informationsbedarfe und Nutzungsweisen diese Art eines kollaborativ organisierten webbasierten Informationsangebotes geeignet ist.

Abstract: Dealing with socio-scientific issues in science classes enables students to participate productively in controversial discussions concerning ethical topics, such as sustainable development. In this respect, well-structured decision-making processes are essential for elaborate reasoning. To foster decision-making competence, a computer-based programme was developed that trains secondary school students (grades 11-13) in decision-making strategies. The main research question is: does training students to use these strategies foster decision-making competence? In addition, the influence of meta-decision aids was examined. Students conducted a task analysis to select an appropriate strategy prior to the decision-making process. Hence, the second research question is: does combining decision-making training with a task analysis enhance decision-making competence at a higher rate? To answer these questions, 386 students were tested in a pre-post-follow-up control-group design that included two training groups (decision-making strategies/decision-making strategies combined with a task analysis) and a control group (decision-making with additional ecological information instead of strategic training). An open-ended questionnaire was used to assess decision-making competence in situations related to sustainable development. The decision-making training led to a significant improvement in the post-test and the follow-up, which was administered three months after the training. Long-term effects on the quality of the students' decisions were evident for both training groups. Gains in competence when reflecting upon the decision-making processes of others were found, to a lesser extent, in the training group that received the additional meta-decision training. In conclusion, training in decision-making strategies is a promising approach to deal with socio-scientific issues related to sustainable development.

Abstract: Wenn ein Kompetenzmodell empirisch überprüft werden soll, sollten Items in einem entsprechenden Test das Kompetenzmodell adäquat repräsentieren und ihre Bearbeitung als Indikator der entsprechenden Kompetenz interpretierbar sein. Um dieses und weitere Gütekriterien gezielt berücksichtigen zu können, wurde der Prozess der Test- und Itemkonstruktion auf der Grundlage eines Kompetenzmodells der Modellkompetenz im Biologieunterricht literaturbasiert in sieben Schritte strukturiert. Diese Schritte umfassen (1) die Formulierung der theoretischen Fundierung, (2) die Testkonzeption, (3) die Systematisierung der Itemkonstruktion, (4) die Entwicklung einer Konstruktionsanleitung, (5) die Itementwicklung, (6) die Itemerprobung und -selektion und (7) die Festlegung des Erhebungsdesigns. Sowohl die adäquate Repräsentation des Kompetenzmodells durch die Items als auch deren Interpretierbarkeit als Indikator für Modellkompetenz wurden durch die theoriegeleitete, systematische Konstruktion sowie dort eingebundene Validierungsschritte erreicht, so dass der Test für die empirische Überprüfung des zugrunde liegenden Kompetenzmodells eingesetzt werden konnte. Die Strukturierung der Testentwicklung kann somit sinnvoll als Grundlage für die Konstruktion anderer Kompetenztests herangezogen werden.
Abstract (english): The empirical testing of a theoretical cognitive model requires items that represent the model adequately. Furthermore, the results of the test should be interpretable as indication of the tested competence. Based on a cognitive model of model competence that was developed in biology education research, the test and item construction was structured in a literature-based seven-step process to include scientific criteria - such as aspects of validity as mentioned above. This seven-step process covers (1) the description of the theoretical foundation, (2) the development of a test conception, (3) the systematizing of the item construction, (4) the development of a manual for the item construction, (5) the development of the items, (6) the testing and selecting of items, and finally (7) the determination of the survey design. By using this theory-driven and systematic construction with the incorporated steps of validation, the adequate representation of the cognitive model through the items and their interpretability as indicator of model competence were achieved. As a result, this instrument can be and was used to test the cognitive model empirically. In conclusion, the seven-step process of test development is a useful basis for the construction of other competence tests.
