Abstract (english): A drawback of video-based analysis of teaching lies in its high cost in terms of time and money. The present study examines the possibility of assessing instructional features on the basis of very short observations, respectively first impressions. We applied the so-called thin-slices technique: This procedure which uses judgements based on first impressions has shown high reliability and validity in the assessment of various psychological constructs. In two studies untrained raters judged 37 elementary school teachers regarding three dimensions of instructional quality based on 30-second randomly selected sequences from full classroom videos. Both showed very high interrater reliabilities. While descriptive analyses indicate a rather undifferentiated judging process, multilevel regression analyses predicting students' achievement gain via ratings of instructional quality indicate a certain predictive validity of first impressions. Abstract: Completing test items under multiple speed conditions avoids the performance measure being confounded with individual differences in the speed-accuracy compromise, and offers insights into the response process, that is, how response time relates to the probability of a correct response. This relation is traditionally represented by two conceptually different functions: the speed-accuracy trade-off function (SATF) across conditions relating the condition average response time to the condition average of accuracy, and the conditional accuracy function (CAF) within a condition describing accuracy conditional on response time. Using a generalized linear mixed modelling approach, we propose an item response modelling framework that is suitable for item response and response time data from experimental speed conditions. The proposed SATF and CAF model accommodates response time effects between conditions (i.e., person and item SATF slope) and within conditions (i.e., residual CAF slopes), captures person and item differences in these effects, and is suitable for measures with a strong speed component. Moreover, for a single condition a CAF model is proposed distinguishing person, item and residual CAF. The properties of the models are illustrated with an empirical example. (DIPF/Orig.)

Title: Reduced impact of alcohol use on next-day tiredness in older relative to younger adults. A role for sleep duration

Abstract: Recent work has suggested that older adults may be less susceptible to the next-day effects of alcohol relative to younger adults. The effects of alcohol in younger adults may be mediated by sleep duration, but due to age differences in the contexts of alcohol use, this mediation process may not generalize to older adults. The present study examined age-group (younger vs. older adults) differences in how alcohol use influenced next-day tiredness during daily life. Reports of alcohol use, sleep duration, and next-day tiredness obtained on ∼101 days from 91 younger adults (ages 20-31 years) and 75 older adults (ages 65-80 years) were modeled using a multilevel, moderated mediation framework. Findings indicated that (a) greater-than-usual alcohol use was associated with greater-than-usual tiredness in younger adults only, (b) greater-than-usual alcohol use was associated with shorter-than-usual sleep duration in younger adults only, and (c) shorter-than-usual sleep duration was associated with greater tiredness in both younger and older adults. For the prototypical younger adult, a significant portion (43%) of the association between alcohol use and next-day tiredness could be explained assuming mediation through sleep duration, whereas there was no evidence of mediation for the prototypical older adult. Findings of age differences in the mediation process underlying associations among alcohol use, sleep, and tiredness provide insight into the mechanisms driving recent observations of reduced next-day effects of alcohol in older relative to younger adults. Abstract: Previous research found that cognitive training increases the Big Five personality trait openness to experience during and some weeks after the intervention. The present study investigated whether long-term changes happen in openness to experience and other personality traits after an extensive cognitive training of memory and perceptual speed. Method: Intervention group consisted of 204 adults (20-31 years and 65-80 years, 50% female), who received daily one-hour cognitive training sessions for about 100 days. The control group consisted of 86 adults (21-29 years and 65-82 years, 51% female), who received no cognitive training. All participants answered the NEO Five-Factor Inventory before and two years after the cognitive training. Latent change models were applied that controlled for age group (young vs. old) and gender. In the long-run the cognitive training did not affect changes in any facet of openness to experience. This was true for young and old participants as well as for men and women. Instead, the cognitive training lowered the general increase of conscientiousness. Conclusion: Even an extensive cognitive training on memory and perceptual speed does not serve as a sufficient intervention for enduring changes in openness to experiences or one of its facets. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Competency measurement typically focuses on task outcomes. Taking process data into account (i.e., processing time and steps) can provide new insights into construct-related solution behavior, or confirm assumptions that govern task design. This chapter summarizes four studies to illustrate the potential of behavioral process data for explaining task success. It also shows that generic process measures such as time on task may have different relations to task success, depending on the features of the task and the test-taker. The first study addresses differential effects of time on task on success across tasks used in the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The second study, also based on PIAAC data, investigates at a fine-grained level, how the time spent on automatable subtasks in problem-solving tasks relates to task success. The third study addresses how the number of steps taken during problem solving predicts success in PIAAC problem-solving tasks. In a fourth study, we explore whether successful test-takers can be clustered on the basis of various behavioral process indicators that reflect information problem solving. Finally, we address how to handle unstructured and large sets of process data, and briefly present a process data extraction tool. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Recent reviews raised the idea of a bidirectional relation between sleep behavior and affect in adults, but little is known about this interplay in general and especially regarding children. In this micro-longitudinal study, the interplay of sleep and affect was captured directly in children's daily life context in and out of school through ambulatory assessment. For 31 consecutive days, 110 elementary school children (8-11 years old) provided information about their last night's sleep and reported their current affect at four daily occasions in school and at home on smartphones. A multilevel approach was used to analyze the relation between sleep and affect the next day (morning, noon, and afternoon) and the relation between evening affect and subsequent sleep. At the withinperson level, sleep quality was related to all observed facets of affect the next day and the strongest effects were found in the morning. The effect of sleep quality on positive affect was particularly pronounced for children who on average went to bed early and slept long. There were, however, no direct within-person effects of sleep quantity on affect. Furthermore, evening affect was related to subsequent sleep. The findings support the idea of a bidirectional relation between affect and sleep in children's daily life (including school). They suggest that good sleep provides a basis and resource for children's affective well-being the next day and demonstrate the importance of analyzing within-person variations of children's sleep. Micro-longitudinal findings can contribute to explain how macro-longitudinal relations between sleep and affect develop over time. (DIPF/Orig.)
