Abstract (english): This paper focuses on a crowdfunding initiative for Open Access E-Books in educational research. It involves research communities and academic libraries for establishing a community of subscribers to share the publication fees of open e-books. The background is the ongoing transformation of the scholarly publication landscape towards Open Access (Suber 2012), which fundamentally changes funding in publishing. There is a demand for free access and circulation of scientific knowledge supported by most national research funding agencies and the European Commission (see Sherpa Juliet 2022), while publishers adjust their business models, academic libraries and research communities promote the idea and follow new conditions. Studies have argued for a seamless financial shift without the need of extra resources (Schimmer et al. 2015). But several deficits become visible when looking at the full range of publication types and cultures. Sustainable financial models are lacking and a fundamental shift in financing is realised: while the physical book is paid through its usage, the digital open access book is funded through publication fees. Given this new condition, the author - instead of the reader - pays for the publication. The pay wall and its barrier for participation changes from reading to publishing through paying the so called article or book processing charges (APC, BPC). This change impacts more intensively the Social Sciences and Humanities because of the less established publication fees in these research communities. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Welchen Beitrag die Konzepte Bildungswerte und Schulentfremdung zur soziologischen Bildungsforschung leisten können, wird in diesem Buch theoretisch und empirisch aufgezeigt. Mit quantitativen Daten aus Sekundarschulen in Luxemburg und im Schweizer Kanton Bern (Projekt SASAL) werden Bildungsungleichheiten nach sozialer Herkunft, Geschlecht und Migrationshintergrund analysiert. Spezifische Werthaltungen gegenüber Bildung beeinflussen die Entstehung von Entfremdung von Lehrerinnen und Lehrern und vom Lernen. Abstract: Als didaktisches Material wurden Bilder seit der frühen Neuzeit eingesetzt; Bilder, die dazu dienten, die Welt mit ihrer Hilfe zu erklären, gibt es selbstverständlich schon länger. Dem Bild wurde eine veranschaulichende Funktion zugeschrieben, oftmals mit der Hoffnung verbunden, den Lernenden einen sowohl weiteren wie auch leichteren Zugang zum Lerngegenstand zu eröffnen. Es stellt sich die Frage, auf welche - historisch unterschiedlichen - Weisen das visuelle Medium einen Lerngegenstand präsentierte und damit auch konstruierte, wie zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten Bild und Wort dabei in Verbindung gestellt wurden, sich ergänzten oder auch widersprachen und auf welche Weise den Lernenden Bilder zugänglich gemacht wurden, was mit den Bildern geschah und wie mit ihnen umgegangen wurde. Abstract (english): Images have been used as didactic material since early modern times; images that served to explain the world with their help have of course been around for longer. The image has been ascribed an illustrative function, often with the hope of giving learners both wider and easier access to the subject matter. The question arises in which - historically different - ways the visual medium presented and thus also constructed an object of learning, how at different times the image and the word were connected, complemented or also contradicted each other, and in which ways images were made accessible to learners, what happened to the images and how they were dealt with. Abstract: Der Sammelband stellt den Stand der transatlantischen Diskussionen im Feld der Bildungsforschung dar, wie er seit 2015 auf der AERA-Konferenz durch die am DIPF beheimatete Servicestelle international cooperation in education angeregt wurde. Die Themengebiete umfassen Schulentwicklung und large scale assessment-Politiken, Migration und öffentliche Bildung sowie Digitalsierungsstartegien und Ökonomisierungstendenzen in Bildungssystemen weltweit und das Problem der Übersetzung im internationalen Diskurs.
Abstract (english): In the field of education, transatlantic discourse has been shaped by an exchange of ideas for a long time. Over the past two decades, education science has increasingly become internationally networked. Since 2015, the Office for International Cooperation in Education at DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education has organized international sessions on education research at the Annual Meetings of the American Educational Research Association, thus providing a floor for transatlantic exchange on current research topics. The volume gives an overview of the transatlantic activities in education research with regard to these sessions. It represents a collection of topics ranging from school development to the use of large-scale assessment and digital data in education to questions related to migration and public education, or the economization of education. Moreover, the volume offers a reflection on the gains respectively obstacles linked to international exchange.

Abstract: The German Democratic Republic, which emerged in 1949 from the eastern occupation zone in divided Germany, was the most western state in the Soviet sphere of influence. The article traces how a new, independent, and efficient school system emerged from a common German history. In constant political competition with the Federal Republic of Germany, it initially demonstrated a strong affinity with the Soviet school system, in which educational practices were rooted in the doctrinal principles of a Marxist-Leninist pedagogy. Abstract (english): This article introduces the topic of the special issue, 'Public education at the crossroads', by pointing to some of the debates and controversies surrounding the topic of public education and by framing the theme, while explaining the context and some components of the educational systems of the countries under examination - namely the USA and Germany. In both countries, control of public education is seen as the states' responsibility within the respective nation states. Despite different developments, both countries are experiencing similar challenges to public education; for example, highly diverse classroom settings, pressure from neoliberal politics, or debates about citizenship education in a world that is increasingly globalized on the one hand, and facing growing nationalism on the other. Finally, this introduction presents articles in this special issue that further discuss the competing factors bringing public education to a new crossroads. (DIPF/Orig.)
