Abstract:
This study examines the development of self-esteem in a sample of 138 Australian adolescents (90 males; 48 females) with cognitive abilities in the lowest 15% (L-CA) and a matched sample of 556 Australian adolescents (312 males; 244 females) with average to high levels of cognitive abilities (A/H-CA). These participants were measured annually (Grade 7 to 12). The findings showed that adolescents with L-CA and A/H-CA experience similar high and stable self-esteem trajectories that present similar relations with key predictors (sex, school usefulness and dislike, parenting, and peer integration). Both groups revealed substantial gender differences showing higher levels of self-esteem for adolescent males remaining relatively stable over time, compared to lower levels among adolescent females which decreased until midadolescence before increasing back. Abstract:
Debates concerning the relationship between home and school had continued throughout the 19th century, they culminated at the turn of the 20th century, leading up to the time of the Weimar Republic. This is […] the time which [the authors] wish to examine more closely in [this article] because it shows a complex fabric of contradictory interests. [The authors] suspect that questions of influence among teachers and parents arose time and again in the field of progressively oriented schools, which aspired to implement changes with respect to lessons as well as school organisation. Progressive schools furthermore propagated participation in the Free School Community. These schools were particularly dependent on parents, regardless of whether the school was a private or test school that had to be politically approved. [The authors] will exemplarily depict activities and discussions of headmasters and parents and between teaching staff and parent councils at two Prussian schools. One school is a private school with what one could call progressive teaching: Berthold-Otto Schule in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The other is a progressive oriented "Sammelschule", i.e. a school based on a newly initiated comprehensive form, which was also understood as an endorsement of progressive teaching. [The authors'] choice of these schools was guided by the assumption that these schools considered themselves progressive, which forced them to find new ways to develop their cooperation with parents. First [the authors] would like to explain the historical background in Prussia from a legal perspective, how legislation evolved concerning parent councils (which were legally recognized in 1919), and which reactions this provoked on the teachers' side. Given the two examples, [they] will show how parents positioned themselves in relation to teachers and in what way and in what areas they gained power in the Foucauldian sense of influence. Finally, [the authors] will briefly discuss the question of whether this should be conceived of as a disempowerment of teachers, and if so, in what respect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Following the typological approach of research on parenting styles, the present study uses latent profile analysis to identify different profiles of parental homework involvement in families. Furthermore, the paper examines whether the profiles differ with respect to other aspects of family socialization as well as children's academic development. On the basis of survey data from 2,668 fifth and sixth graders and their parents, three profiles of parental homework involvement were revealed. The profiles differed along the dimensions of emotional support, the provision of structure, and interference/control. Families characterized by different homework involvement profiles also differed with respect to various aspects of family socialization. Moreover, students' academic development differed according to which family profile they belonged to. By applying a typological approach, the present study complements previous research on parental homework involvement, which has focused on analyzing separate dimensions of parental behavior. Abstract (english):
The present study examined how parental political attitudes, parenting styles, and classroom characteristicspredict adolescents' political alienation, as feelings about the individual's ability to affectthe political system's performance at the individual level. Participants were 463 families that includedmothers, fathers, and their adolescent children in 6th, 8th, and 10th grades. Teachers reported onthe classroom context. Multilevel analyses indicated several findings: parental and adolescent political attitudes supported a parent-adolescent transmission process, adolescents' perceptions of parentalattitudes mediated the transmission process, authoritarian parenting style positively predictedadolescent political alienation, and classrooms comprised of teachers with clear educational goalswere negatively related to adolescent political alienation. Results are discussed in terms of learningpolitical alienation within family by parent- child transmission. Associations among adolescent politicalalienation, parenting style, and classroom climate are considered as interaction characteristicswith authorities shaping adolescents' political attitudes.
