Abstract (english): In the wake of COVID-19, study conditions in Europe have changed dramatically. To limit contact between students and teachers, since March 2020 teaching has largely taken place digitally (remotely via digital means) and in private. Because the success of digital learning likely relies on many factors beyond good digital infrastructure condi tions, this article focuses on which aspects, at both the teacher and the student levels, promote digital learning success. The large-scale student survey "Studying in Times of the Corona Pandemic" conducted at German universities and universities of applied sciences in the summer semester of 2020 ofers data on how COVID-19 has afected several aspects of university studying in Germany. Here, we consider this data within the theoretical framework "theory of transactional distance" introduced by Moore (in: Moore (ed) Handbook of distance education, Routledge, 2018), according to which the success of digital teaching is infuenced by dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy. Based on various regression analyses, our results show that several (digital) framework conditions must be created on both the teacher and student levels to achieve suf fcient digital learning success. In this sense, our fndings provide guidance on which aspects institutions of higher education should focus on when developing or updating their digitalization strategies. In accordance with collaborative learning approaches a key factor for learning success appears to be enabling peer-to-peer interactions. This fnding supports our prediction that the possibility of engaging in interactive learning activities is crucial for students' learning experience, as it might reduce the percep tion of transactional distance and allow for social exchange. The strongest predictor of students' learning success turned out to be the (perceived) digital competencies of the teachers. This fnding clearly emphasizes that teachers must be qualifed to address the very specifc challenges of teaching in digital contexts and indicates that universities may need to implement more teacher qualifcation programs. Abstract: Eine der zentralen Fragen sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung ist die Vorhersage sozioökonomischen Erfolges im Erwachsenenalter. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Bedeutung des Selbstwertes und dessen Zusammenspiel mit sozialer Herkunft und kognitiven Grundfähigkeiten im frühen Jugendalter für die Vorhersage des Bildungs- und beruflichen Erfolges. Spezifisch wird geprüft, ob die Faktoren interagieren und vor allem Selbstwert kompensatorisch oder verstärkend auf existierende (soziale) Herkunftsunterschiede wirkt. Dies wurde mit der längsschnittlichen Studie Bildungsverläufe und psychosoziale Entwicklung im Jugendalter und jungen Erwachsenenalter (BIJU) mit den Entwicklungen von der 7. Klasse bis ins Alter von knapp 31 Jahren untersucht. Es ließen sich Hinweise auf einen positiven Interaktionseffekt zwischen Selbstwert und sozioökonomischem Hintergrund für die Vorhersage des Bildungserfolges identifizieren. Dieser Interaktionseffekt konnte jedoch auch mit einer Interaktion zwischen sozioökonomischem Hintergrund und kognitiven Grundfähigkeiten erklärt werden. Im Hinblick auf Berufsstatus und Arbeitseinkommen deuteten sich keine Haupt- und Interaktionseffekte des Selbstwerts an. Zusammenfassend fanden sich zumindest für den Bildungserfolg im Erwachsenenalter Indizien für kumulative Vorteile aufgrund vorangehender (sozialer) Unterschiede (Matthäuseffekte). Diese waren jedoch nicht spezifisch für Selbstwert, sondern auch durch kognitive Ressourcen erklärbar. Es fanden sich keine Hinweise auf kompensatorische Effekte zwischen vorangehenden Ressourcenunterschieden. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): One of the central questions in social science research is what predicts socioeconomic success in adulthood. This article investigates the role of self-esteem and its interplay with social background and intelligence in early adolescence in predicting educational attainment and occupational success in adulthood. Specifically, the present study tests for interactions between these factors and examines whether self-esteem, in particular, has a compensatory or amplifying effect on existing (social) background differences. To this end, it draws on data from the longitudinal study Learning Processes, Educational Careers, and Psychosocial Development in Adolescence and Young Adulthood (BIJU), tracking development from the age of 12 to 31 years. The results indicate a positive interaction effect between self-esteem and socioeconomic background in predicting educational attainment. However, this interaction effect was similarly explained by an interaction between socioeconomic background and intelligence. There were no main or interaction effects of self-esteem on occupational status or income. In sum, at least for educational attainment in adulthood, the results point to cumulative advantages of baseline (social) differences (Matthew effects). These were not specific to self-esteem, however, but were also explained by cognitive resources. No evidence was found for compensatory effects between baseline differences in resources. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Whether exclusion hurts or inclusion feels good is debated within social psychology, and research designs often compare people who are excluded from those who are included. Here, we examined how participants differ when they are excluded or included relative to when they are not engaging in social interactions. Participants completed an ecological momentary assessment study (7 days, six measures a day). Participants indicated if they were having a social interaction, whether the interaction was inclusionary or exclusionary, and their mood and basic needs. We found that when people were excluded, relative to no interaction, they had lower basic needs and worsened mood; the reverse was true during inclusion episodes. We also found that the within-person effect of exclusion was larger than the within-person effect of inclusion and that exclusion experiences were relatively uncommon (≈10% of all reported social interactions). Future research and the importance of examining within-person effects are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Collaboration is one of the important 21st-century skills. It can take place in remote or co-located settings. Co-located collaboration (CC) is a very complex process that involves subtle human interactions that can be described with indicators like eye gaze, speaking time, pitch, and social skills from different modalities. With the advent of sensors, multimodal learning analytics has gained momentum to detect CC quality. Indicators (or low-level events) can be used to detect CC quality with the help of measurable markers (i.e., indexes composed of one or more indicators) which give the high-level collaboration process definition. However, this understanding is incomplete without considering the scenarios (such as problem solving or meetings) of CC. The scenario of CC affects the set of indicators considered: for instance, in collaborative programming, grabbing the mouse from the partner is an indicator of collaboration; whereas in collaborative meetings, eye gaze, and audio level are indicators of collaboration. This can be a result of the differing goals and fundamental parameters (such as group behavior, interaction, or composition) in each scenario. In this review, we present our work on profiles of indicators on the basis of a scenario-driven prioritization, the parameters in different CC scenarios are mapped onto the indicators and the available indexes. This defines the conceptual model to support the design of a CC quality detection and prediction system. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: To slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus, schools around the world were closed in early 2020, transferring children's scholastic activities to the homes and imposing a massive burden on parents and school-age children. Using data of a 21-day diary study conducted between March and April 2020 in Germany, this work examined whether (a) distance learning and (b) parents' involvement therein were associated with negative parent-child interactions and affective well-being of parents and children, over and above the effect of daily stressors. Participants were 562 parents (489 mothers, Mage = 42.79, SDage = 6.12, range = 25-63) most of whom were married (n = 382, 68.0%). They responded to the daily items with respect to the youngest child living in their household (Mage = 9.74, SDage = 2.81, range = 6-19). On days when children were working on school tasks, parents reported more negative parent-child interactions as well as lower parental and child positive affect and higher child negative affect, but not higher parental negative affect. Moreover, days when parents were more heavily involved in learning (i.e., when children worked less independently) were days with more negative parent-child interactions, lower parental and child positive affect, and higher parental and child negative affect. Negative parent-child interactions were linked to lower affective well-being of parents and children, and partially accounted for the relation among daily stressors and affective well-being. The present work highlights the need for measures to better support school-age children and their parents during distance learning. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 outbreak came with an unprecedented opportunity to investigate how the new reality of social distancing and limited international travel will affect the organization of academic conferences. Objectives: Drawing on conceptualization of academic conferences as professional learning spaces, in this study, we examine the factors associated with the perceived value of purely virtual academic conferences and how such perceptions differ between participants from different research fields. The aim was to gain knowledge about factors that should be considered when designing a virtual conference. Methods: Survey data from participants of three different virtual conferences were collected (N = 311). Kendall's rank correlation and χ2-analyses were performed. Results and Conclusion: Results show satisfaction with social interaction, the extent to which presentations met participants' topics of interest and the perceived importance of learning and getting an overview on the research topic to be related to the value rating. Researchers from different research fields differ significantly in their opinion about the most appropriate conference format regarding getting an overview on the research topic. For some researchers, virtual participation might be a valuable alternative to attending a conference in person. The study serves as a first attempt to understand how and for which target groups virtual conferences serve as a valuable learning event. Further research on this conference format is needed. Lay Description What is already known about the topic: Prior to the pandemic only a few academic conferences were held purely virtual, thus scientific knowledge about this event format was rather scarce. Research on face-to-face conferences identified these events as platforms for networking and learning with a focus on social interaction. Mainly informal social interaction and networking is limited in the virtual space. What this paper adds: First insights how and for which target groups virtual conferences serve as a valuable learning event. Perceptions about the most appropriate conference format regarding certain conference aspects among researchers from different fields. Implications for practice: Formal interaction opportunities should be considered when designing a virtual conference. Virtual conferences are valuable events especially for those people, who focus on learning.

Abstract: Social presence is a central concept relating to interpersonal aspects in online distance learning. However, the conditions and determinants of its emergence are not yet fully understood. As a construct rooted in social psychology, the potential of individual differences predicting perceptions of social presence has been largely neglected, thus, constituting a gap in our understanding. In a sample of 201 online distance education students, the merits of a trait-level view of social presence were investigated. To this end, personality was assessed using the Big Five personality inventory, exploring both a dimensional and a typological approach. Results suggest that specific personality typologies may be more prone to perceptions of social presence, thus calling for an extension of our theoretical modeling of the construct. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Learning analytics dashboards (LADs) are designed as feedback tools for learners, but until recently, learners rarely have had a say in how LADs are designed and what information they receive through LADs. To overcome this shortcoming, we have developed a customisable LAD for Coursera MOOCs on which learners can set goals and choose indicators to monitor. Following a mixed-methods approach, we analyse 401 learners' indicator selection behaviour in order to understand the decisions they make on the LAD and whether learner goals and self-regulated learning skills influence these decisions. We found that learners overwhelmingly chose indicators about completed activities. Goals are not associated with indicator selection behaviour, while help-seeking skills predict learners' choice of monitoring their engagement in discussions and time management skills predict learners' interest in procrastination indicators. The findings have implications for our understanding of learners' use of LADs and their design. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Die Coronavirus-Pandemie greift tief in das Leben von uns allen ein. Kinder und Jugendliche sind von der aktuellen Situation hinsichtlich ihrer Bildungs- und vielfältiger Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten deutlich betroffen, denn Kindheit und Jugend sind Phasen im Lebenslauf mit einzigartigen Soziali- sationsanforderungen und Lebensabschnitten, in denen Erfahrungen besonders prägend wirken. Die meisten Kinder und Jugendlichen werden aller Voraussicht nach Belastungen und Defizite, die durch die Pandemie verursacht werden, aufgrund der Plastizität1 des menschlichen Gehirns und der Resilienz2 des Organismus überwinden können. Manche Kinder und Jugendliche werden hinge- gen kurz-, mittel- und wahrscheinlich auch langfristig von Belastungen und erlittenen Defiziten be- gleitet werden. Die Pandemie wirkt hier oft als Verstärker bereits zuvor bestehender Ungleichhei- ten und Entwicklungsrisiken. In einer Reihe von bislang sieben Ad-hoc-Stellungnahmen der Nationalen Akademie der Wissen- schaften Leopoldina wurden Empfehlungen zu verschiedenen Fragen im Kontext der Coronavirus- Pandemie veröffentlicht. Die vorliegende 8. Ad-hoc-Stellungnahme befasst sich mit der psychoso- zialen und edukativen Situation von Kindern und Jugendlichen in der Pandemie und geht auch auf Aspekte der motorischen Entwicklung ein. In der dynamischen Pandemie-Situation sind Erkennt- nisse zu den Auswirkungen auf Kinder und Jugendliche nur Momentaufnahmen. Viele der bislang verfügbaren Studien sind aufgrund ihrer noch kurzen Beobachtungszeit in ihrer Aussagekraft und Übertragbarkeit begrenzt. Dennoch gibt es eine Reihe von empirischen Studien, die Hinweise auf erlebte Belastungen geben. Zudem lassen sich aus der umfangreichen Forschung zu Stress- und Belastungsfaktoren bei Kindern und Jugendlichen evidenzbasierte Annahmen über die weitere Entwicklung ableiten. Es gibt wichtige Lebensbereiche von Kindern und Jugendlichen wie künstlerische, musische und handwerkliche Aktivitäten, die bislang im Kontext der Coronavirus-Pandemie wenig oder gar nicht empirisch untersucht wurden und daher in dieser Stellungnahme nicht berücksichtigt werden. Gleichwohl spielen sie für die Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen eine wichtige Rolle. Die Pandemie hatte in vielfältiger Hinsicht Auswirkungen auf Kinder und Jugendliche, vor allem in den Bereichen Bildung, soziale Interaktion und sozioemotionale Entwicklung, körperliche Aktivität sowie psychisches Wohlbefinden. Aber nicht alle Kinder und Jugendlichen sind im gleichen Maße betroffen. Es gibt eine große Variabilität, wie gut Kinder und Jugendliche, ihre Familien und ihr lo- kales Umfeld die Pandemiesituation bewältigen. Bereits vor der Pandemie wurde zudem immer wieder auf die Belastungen für Kinder und Jugendliche hingewiesen, die durch knappe Ressourcen bedingt sein können, zum Beispiel Einkommen und Bildung der Eltern. Eine Kumulation von Belas- tungen erhöht die Wahrscheinlichkeit negativer Auswirkungen der Pandemie. Es ist eine zentrale gesellschaftliche und politische Aufgabe, Bildungs- und Unterstützungsstruktu- ren so zu gestalten, dass sie die pandemiebedingten Defizite kompensieren und die bereits vorher bestehenden Ungleichheiten in Bildungs- und Entwicklungschancen von Kindern und Jugendlichen nachhaltig adressieren. Es sollte also nicht nur darum gehen, pandemiebedingte Defizite auszuglei- chen, sondern die Situation von Kindern und Jugendlichen in Deutschland soll nach der Pandemie besser als vorher sein. Dabei sollten auch strukturelle Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten für Kinder und Jugendliche geschaffen bzw. ausgebaut werden, um Maßnahmen nicht nur für sie, sondern ge- meinsam mit ihnen zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Mit dieser Ad-hoc-Stellungnahme empfiehlt die Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopol- dina: - Offenhalten von Bildungseinrichtungen unter Berücksichtigung geeigneter Schutzmaßnahmen und Ermöglichen eines Präsenzbetriebs, da für nahezu alle Kita-Kinder und Schulkinder der Präsenzbetrieb in Kitas und Schulen die effektivste Art des Lernens ist. - Beschleunigung des Ausbaus der digitalen Infrastruktur der Bildungseinrichtungen, die Hard- wareausstattung, IT-Fachkräfte sowie Aus- und Fortbildung der pädagogischen Fachkräfte und Lehrkräfte in Kitas und Schulen umfasst. - Nachhaltige Sprachförderung zum Erlernen der deutschen Sprache durch standardisierte frühe Sprachdiagnostik und den Ausbau von alltagsintegrierter sprachlicher Bildung als fester Be- standteil der Kindertagesbetreuung. - Anpassung der Stundentafel in den Grundschulen, um vorrangig die Rückstände in den Kernfä- chern Deutsch und Mathematik aufzuholen, sowie zusätzliche Förderinstrumente für Schüle- rinnen und Schüler mit schwächeren schulischen Leistungen in der Primar- und Sekundarstufe. - Ausbau der Informationsangebote zu vor Ort verfügbaren Fördermaßnahmen sowie Mento- ring-Programme zur Unterstützung der psychosozialen Entwicklung und Förderung der Bil- dungsmobilität. - Ausbau einer bewegungsfördernden Infrastruktur für Kinder und Jugendliche, idealerweise tägliche Bewegungsangebote in Kitas und Schulen sowie umfassende Programme zur Förde- rung eines gesunden Lebensstils in Kitas und Schulen (Ernährung, Schlaf, körperliche Aktivität). - Fortbildung der pädagogischen Fachkräfte in Kitas und Lehrkräfte in Schulen im Hinblick auf ein Frühwarnsystem, das für auftretende psychische Probleme sensibilisiert. Dies sollte er- gänzt werden durch den Ausbau der bestehenden Infrastruktur, z.B. im Bereich der Schulsozi- alarbeit. - Ausbau evidenzbasierter Maßnahmen in der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe sowie in der Therapie psychischer Störungen des Kindes- und Jugendalters, um eine weitere Verbesserung des Be- handlungserfolges bei psychischen Erkrankungen zu erreichen. Die Wartefrist auf einen Thera- pieplatz sollte verkürzt werden. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Das Buch stellt sieben Verfahren vor, die unterschiedliche Facetten (schrift-)sprachlicher Bildung erfassen. Die Verfahren fokussieren unterschiedlcihe Aspekte der Sprachbildung sowie Sprach- und Leseförderung in Kindertageseinrichtungen und Schulen und adressieren unterschiedliche Zielgruppen (pädagogische Fachkräfte, Lehrkräfte, Kinder). Die Instrumente wurden im Rahmen der Initiative "Bildung durch Sprache und Schrift" (BiSS) entwickelt und primär für Forschungszwecke, jedoch auch in der Aus- und Weiterbildung von pädagogischen Fach- und Lehrkräften einsetzbar. Ein online-Anhang stellt die Instrumente sowie alle notwendigen Materialien zur Verfügung.
