Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Multiple document comprehension (MDC) is an essential skill for university students, making it beneficial to improve it. We assume that the value assigned to MDC is important to foster MDC since it can be a predictor for behavioral choices, such as working with self-study material. Using self-study material is typical for university learning, but it requires the motivation to improve a skill such as MDC. We define motivation to improve MDC in terms of expectancy, value, and cost to improve MDC. We expect that it is a driving force for working with self-study material on MDC, while it might also depend on the perceived value of MDC. Therefore, this study examined whether the perceived value of MDC predicts the motivation to improve MDC, which is also expected to predict the use of self-study material. A total of 278 students of different majors participated in a MDC assessment and received the opportunity to train their MDC skill with self-study material. The engagement in using the self-study material was measured by the total time and the number of page transitions on the self-study material. The results indicated that the perceived value of MDC partially predicted motivation to improve MDC. However, further analysis revealed mainly no significant effects of the perceived value of MDC and the motivation to improve MDC on the engagement in using the self-study material. However, the log data indicated that the engagement in using the self-study material was not as high as expected. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
When scaling psychological tests with methods of item response theory it is necessary to investigate to what extent the responses correspond to the model predictions. In addition to the statistical evaluation of item misfit, the question arises as to its practical significance. Although item removal is undesirable for several reasons, its practical consequences are rarely investigated and focus mostly on main survey data with pre-selected items. In this paper, we identify criteria to evaluate practical significance and discuss them with respect to various types of assessments and their particular purposes. We then demonstrate the practical consequences of item misfit using two data examples from the German PISA 2018 field trial study: one with cognitive data and one with non-cognitive/metacognitive data. For the former, we scale the data under the GPCM with and without the inclusion of misfitting items, and investigate how this influences the trait distribution and the allocation to reading competency levels. For non-cognitive/metacognitive data, we explore the effect of excluding misfitting items on estimated gender differences. Our results indicate minor practical consequences for person allocation and no changes in the estimated gender-difference effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
A central challenge of instructional research is to measure teaching characteristics appropriately. The assessment of (filmed) instruction by trained raters is regarded as the best way to achieve this, but is associated with high organizational and time costs. In this paper, we present a newly developed instrument for assessing the teaching quality characteristic potential for cognitive activation (PCA). The instrument was developed for mathematics lessons on the topic of quadratic equations. It is based on the joint evaluation of all instructional artifacts of a lesson (lesson plans, student assignments, assessments, etc.) by trained raters and measures the potential for cognitive activation brought into the classroom by the teacher in writing. The validity of the intended interpretation as an indicator for the written PCA of a lesson is examined by an argument-based approach and can be supported by various pieces of evidence: For example, a decision study shows that the instrument can already be reliably assessed by a single rater. Furthermore, it correlates substantially with a measurement of the PCA based on video ratings. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Background: Students' mastery goals are positively related to adaptive learning behaviour. Moreover, these goals often mediate the relation between perceived classroom characteristics and academic achievement. Research generally shows a decline of academic achievement and mastery goals after transition to middle school. Creating a learning environment at middleschool according to students' basic needs for autonomy, competence, and social relatednessmight help to reduce these declines. However, little is known about the relationship between perceived fulfilment of needs, mastery goals, and academic achievement. Aims. We investigate the relationship between indicators of students' perceivedfulfilment of needs and their graded performance to determine whether the connection isindirect via mastery goals. Sample. We surveyed 2,105 students during the first year in middle school. Methods: We assessed the amount of the students'perceived autonomy, recognition of competence and support from the teacher(as indicators of competence and social relatedness) in class, their mastery goals, and their grades. Multilevel models were calculated. Results: Perceived fulfilment of needs correlated significantly with mastery goals andgraded performance. Mastery goals predicted graded performance; however, when perceived fulfilment of needs and mastery goals were analysed simultaneously, the correlation between mastery goals and graded performance was no longer significant. There was no indirect relation between perceived fulfilment of needs and gradedperformance via mastery goals. Conclusions: Results indicate that creating the learning environment according to thestudents' basic needs is positively related to their mastery goals and graded performanceduring the first year at middle school. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Turkish immigrant students in Germany show disparities in reading comprehension from primary school onwards. This has been linked to lower language competencies in the language of school and teaching (German). Instead of testing these language competencies, the language spoken at home is often used as a proximal measure. The paper at hand tries to answer, if reading comprehension of Turkish-German bilingual primary school students varies systematically with the language spoken with different family members. WIthin the project BiPeer 186 students were asked which languages they use with their father, mother and siblings. When speaking to their siblings the children use German more often than in communications with their parents. However, only the language with the father - not with mother or siblings - was found to be correlated positively with reading comprehension: The more German was used, the better the children understood written German texts. In multivariate regression analysis no significant effect of language spoken with the father on reading comprehension was found, when controlling for gender, grade, cognitive abilities and German vocabulary. The use of language at home as a proxy for language competencies is discussed in the light of these findings. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The foundation of school success is laid early in children's lives. Consequently, assessments of academic precursors may help to identify children in need of additional support. Such early assessments could also be interesting from an international perspective when educational systems are compared. This analysis is used to inform on the comparability of Slovenian and German versions of the English on-school-entry assessment tool "Performance Indicators in Primary School" (PIPS; Tymms and Albone 2002). PIPS was also used to predict later academic achievement in the two national samples. The German sample consisted of 468 children with a mean age of about 6;6 years at school entry (48.7 % girls). In Slovenia, 328 children (49 % girls) were assessed (mean age of about 6;3 years at school entry). Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses for PIPS did not support weak measurement invariance. However, results indicated that the number of factors as well as the pattern of loadings seems to be comparable. Further research is needed to examine in which respects PIPS might work as a tool for international comparisons. Structural equation modelling indicated that PIPS can be used as a predictor of academic achievement and that overall academic achievement could be predicted best by early numeracy. PIPS measures of literacy and numeracy skills were specific and significant predictors of children's later language and math achievement in grade 1. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Home and educational institutions are children's most important external influences and a positive partnership between the two can positively affect children's cognitive and non-cognitive development. Quality of family-preschool partnership (FPP) can depend on preschool and family characteristics. For Germany, studies show that immigrant parents perceive a lack of positive FPP. The present study addresses the following research questions: (1) How do parents and teachers in Germany rate FPP? (2) Do ratings of FPP differ between parents who do or do not speak German at home? (3) Is there a relation between the structural quality of the centre and ratings of FPP for teachers and parents? Results reflect positive ratings of FPP (1). Mean comparisons confirmed differences between parent groups (2). Multilevel regression analyses indicate that percentage of children who do not speak German at home is positively associated with parents' ratings of FPP, but negatively with teachers' satisfaction about FPP (3). Abstract:
Using data from PISA 2009, the present study investigates firstly how equally students are exposed to opportunities to improve their reading skills (OTL) depending on the school they are enrolled in, and secondly the links between OTL in reading and achievement at the school level. A multidimensional within-item IRT is used to model the OTL. The intraclass correlation of both OTL dimensions issued from the IRT analysis - reading fiction and reading non-continuous tasks - is high, especially in differentiated education systems, showing an unequal exposure to OTL in reading according to the school. Robust correlations between the two OTL dimensions and reading achievement are observed at the school level. In addition, the results of a multilevel regression analysis show that a substantial proportion of the between-school variance in reading can be explained by OTL and by the school social intake. The proportion of between-school variance explained jointly by OTL and social intake is higher in differentiated education systems than in comprehensive ones. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract:
In assessing verbal academic self-concept with preadolescents, researchers have used scales for students' self-concepts in reading and in their native language interchangeably. The authors conducted 3 studies with German students to test whether reading and German (i.e., native language) self-concepts can be treated as the same or different constructs. Compared with other facets of academic self-concept, reading self-concept was more highly related to reading test scores (Study 1) and German self-concept to German grades (Study 2). In Study 3, reading and general school self-concepts demonstrated similar relations to German grades. The findings of the 3 studies, albeit indirect, supported the specificity matching principle and caution researchers against applying reading and native language self-concept scales uncritically to infer verbal self-concept.
