Abstract: The dualism of emic and etic plays a crucial role in the emergence of three culturally informed approaches of psychology: cross-cultural psychology (CCP), cultural psychology (CP) and indigenous psychologies (IPs), a distinction largely accepted nowadays. Similarities and/or differences between these positions are usually discussed either on the level of phenomena (data) or theory. In this paper, however, the discussion takes place on a meta-theoretical or epistemological level, which is also emerging elsewhere. In following several earlier papers of the author, first, four perspectives are distinguished that underlie present day psychology. Second, these are used as a framework for linking them to the three "camps". This analysis will show that these perspectives are characterized by different underlying worldviews, interests as well as methodical preferences. Third, it is claimed that this level of discussion is quite fruitful for the ongoing discourse on the three camps, but also helps one to understand, why the duality between emic and etic approaches is - implicitly or explicitly - at the core of these discussions, because their relevance turns out to differ in the three camps. In that sense, the emic/etic duality is used here as a "litmus test" to exemplify these deeper differences between the camps, thereby highlighting them. Fourth, in order to overcome not only the dilemma between the unique and general in psychology, but also to clarify the relation between the individual and culture it is proposed that psychology should take human action as its unit of analysis, thereby connecting historically to the early beginnings of psychology at the end of the 19th century. It will be argued that a culture inclusive action theory may overcome this tension and may help to integrate western and other indigenous psychologies, and hence it could be advantageous to integrate CP and IPs as well. This is possible because the proposed theory hopefully provides a universal framework for psychological concepts, yet allows for their culture specific expression. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The chapter deals with the concept of Culture-Inclusive Action Theory and research the author and his co-workers conducted primarily in Saarbrücken (and later in Frankfurt) over the last 35 years in two (complementary) subject areas, which also form the roots of the chapter: cross-cultural research and development of moral judgment in the tradition of Piaget/Kohlberg. In cross-cultural psychology, the duality "person versus culture" is unavoidable. In moral development, the dualities "content versus structure," "facts versus norms," and "affects versus cognition" are likewise unavoidable. In both research fields, the assumption of a dialectical relation between these dualities and the role of action theory in relation to dialectics was and still is attractive. In the following this role is interpreted also within Dynamic System Theory, by the concepts of upward emergence and downward selection, which are synthesized by the human action. This theoretical orientation from the very beginning called for its justification vìs-a-vìs mainstream psychology by implying meta-theoretical reflections. After a short introduction into dialectics and action theory in psychology, a more detailed treatment of the two research subjects are presented. The first step in both topics was (biographically) a systematic theoretical analysis dealing with the meaning of culture for psychology and the deep structure of moral development. In both topics the (descriptive) application of action theory and the (interpretative) appropriation of dialectics was productive and lead to contextualized research by conceptualizing a "regional cultural identity" on the one hand and formulating "types of everyday morality" on the other. This cultural contextualization is the reason for calling our approach Culture-Inclusive Action Theory. A later study on the process of coming to terms with cancer was based on the same theoretical model; developed in both fields (culture and morality), it was also methodically contextualized from the very beginnings.

Abstract: Die Arbeit schließt an eine längere Diskussion über die Fruchtbarkeit, die Kuhn'schen Wissenschaftstheorie auch auf die Psychologie anzuwenden an. Wie bereits früher werden insgesamt vier Perspektiven/Paradigmen in der Psychologie unterschieden (die physikalisch/kausale, die biologisch/teleonomische, die kulturell/historisch symbolische und die teleologische/selbstreflexive Perspektive). Es wird argumentiert, dass diese Perspektiven inkommensurabel aber komplementär sind. Dann wird gezeigt, dass das Konzept der Bedeutung in engem Zusammenhang zum Kontext und zu Wahrheitskonzepten steht. Schließlich werden die Begriffe Bedeutung, Kontext und Wahrheit in ihrem je verschiedenen Verständnis und Zusammenhang durch die vier Perspektiven durchgespielt. Schließlich werden weiterführende Überlegungen vorgetragen, die letztlich darauf abzielen, die Splits zwischen den Perspektiven innerhalb der Psychologie zu überwinden.

Abstract: Der Autor stellt in seinem Beitrag grundsätzliche Überlegungen zur Beziehung der drei psychologischen Subdisziplinen an, die kulturelle Aspekte psychologischer Phänomene und Prozesse zu ihrem hauptsächlichen Themengebiet erklären: kulturvergleichende Psychologie, indigene Psychologien und Kulturpsychologie. Die kulturvergleichende Psychologie befasst sich vorrangig mit der Erforschung von Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschieden von psychologischen Prozessen in möglichst vielen kulturellen und ethnischen Gruppen. Sie definiert sich damit mehr als Methode als über (kulturelle) Inhalte. Die indigenen Psychologien konzentrieren sich auf kulturspezifische psychologische Prozesse und Konzepte. Die Kulturpsychologie versucht das Phänomen der Kultur in die psychologische Theoriebildung zu integrieren und ist damit weniger auf kulturspezifische Konzepte fokussiert als vielmehr auf die Prozesse, durch die Merkmale der Kultur¤ individualpsychologische Phänomene beeinflussen. Im zweiten Teil des Beitrags werden konkrete Beispiele aus der interkulturellen Forschung diskutiert, die zeigen, dass auch in der quantitativ-methodologisch und nomothetisch orien¤tierten kulturvergleichenden Psychologie eine zunehmende theoretische Integration des Kulturkonzepts erfolgt. Im dritten Teil werden die genannten Ansätze in ihrer historischen Entwicklung dargestellt, und es wird ihre jeweilige erkenntnistheoretische Grundauffassung, d.h. das Verhältnis des jeweiligen Ansatzes zur mechanistischen, organismischen, selbstreflexiven und historisch-kulturellen Weltsicht expliziert. Im letzten Teil wird als Schlussfolgerung die Forderung erhoben und begründet, dass eine grundsätzliche Berücksichtigung des sozio-kulturellen Kontexts als konstituierendes Merkmal psychologischer Theoriebildung notwendig ist und eine Transformation der Psychologie zur Kulturpsychologie zur Folge haben müsste. Abstract: Der Band dokumentiert die Beiträge des Symposiums "Kultur - Handlung - Demokratie". Die Autoren vertreten primär einen kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansatz, beleuchten den Zusammenhang von Kultur, Handlung und Demokratie aus inhaltlichverschiedenen Blickwinkeln und unterschiedlichen methodologischen und theoretischen Schwerpunktsetzungen. Die Beiträge spiegeln Forschungsansätze aus der Perspektive der Soziologie, Kulturpsychologie, Entwicklungspsychologie und der Erziehungswissenschaft wieder, die eine interdisziplinäre Auseinandersetzung geradezu herausfordern und so ein Weiterdenken erst ermöglichen. Abstract (english): Cross-cultural counselling addresses the challenges faced when working with clients from diverse backgrounds, primarily stressing differences. That counselling itself is a cultural practice generally tends to be overlooked. To encourage a debate that goes beyond cross-cultural concerns, the culture concept based on an action theoretical approach to cultural psychology is outlined showing that humans are inconceivable without culture. From this perspective counselling is understood as a cultural-historical phenomenon, a culture-bound communicative and standard-oriented action, which takes place against a backdrop of socio-political conditions. Personal cultural standards have to be related to one another systematically during counselling. They are relevant at an individual and institutional level (well-being and supra-individual standards) and pertain to processes as well (cultural competence). Essentially one is dealing with individual meaning systems rather than cultures. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Kultur, Handlung und Demokratie sind aktuelle gesellschafts- und bildungspolitische Themen, die im Werk von Lutz H. Eckensberger einen prominenten Rang einnehmen. In diesem Beitrag werden die Verknüpfungen hergestellt und deutlichgemacht. Der mit einer Entwicklungsdimension verknüpfte kulturpsychologische Ansatz ist äußerst fruchtbar für die Klärung der Voraussetzungsbedingungen ( enabling conditions) moderner Demokratien. Er rekonstruiert an der Schnittstelle von Individuum und Kultur mögliche Lernchancen und Blockaden für die normativen Grundlagen, die hinter Begriffen wie Kompetenz, Selbstverantwortung, Vertrauen, Solidarität usw. stehen. Abstract (english): Culture, action and democracy are current topics of debates in society and educational policies. They also have a prominent position in the work of Lutz H. Eckensberger. The contribution clarifies the links between these themes and their connection to Eckensberger's theory. The cultural psychological approach with its developmental dimension is very fruitful for clarifying the enabling conditions of modern democracies. It reconstructs possible opportunities for and barriers to learning the normative principles that form the backdrop of terms such as competence, responsibility, trust, solidarity etc. at the interface between individual and culture. Abstract: Der einleitende Beitrag stellt die Konzeption des Symposiums im Kontext der kulturpsychologischen handlungstheoretischen Arbeiten von Eckensberger und der sich daraus ergebenden Konsequenzen für eine wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung über Demokratie und demokratische Kompetenz dar. Demokratie impliziert mehr als eine Regierungsform, sie ist zugleich auch Lebensform und Weltanschauung, die einen Deutungshorizont bildet, in dem Kultur, Handlung und Demokratie untrennbar zusammenhängen. Abstract (english): The introductory article presents the concept of the symposium in the context of the cultural psychological and action theoretical work of Eckensberger as well as the resulting consequences for a scientific debate on democracy anddemocratic competency. Democracy implies more than a way of government, it is simultaneously also a lifestyle and worldview that forms an interpretational horizon in which culture, action and democracy are inextricably entwined. Abstract: Der Beitrag verfolgt eine sachliche und eine persönliche Zielsetzung. Er versucht, die vorangegangenen Beiträge des Buchs aus der Vogelperspektive zu diskutieren. Dazu werden zwei Themen formuliert: Zum einen die methodologische Reflexion auf die Humanwissenschaft, zum anderen die Bestimmung des Sozialen und seiner Untergliederung. Beide Themen ergeben sich nicht nur aus den Beiträgen, sondern auch aus meiner Arbeit. Deshalb werden die Themen auch biographisch rekonstruiert. Dieser Versuch erlaubt es gleichzeitig, die Beiträge insgesamt zu meiner eigenen Arbeit in Beziehung zu setzen, und in diesem Zusammenhang jenen zu danken, die mich auf meinem Berufsweg begleitet haben. Abstract (english): The contribution pursues a factual and a personal objective. It attempts to discuss the previous contributions of the book from a bird's eye view. To do so two themes are formulated: on the one hand methodological reflexions on human science, on the other identification of the social and its subdivisions. Both themes not only arise from the contributions but also from my work. Thus, the themes are also reconstructed biographically. This attempt simultaneously allows me to relate the contributions to my own work, and in this context to thank all those who have accompanied my working life. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): The study of morality necessarily leads to a perspective that conceives of psychology primarily as a cultural science rather than a natural science. In the chapter the perspective of a cultural psychology is taken. Under this perspective, the relationship between culture and morality is intrinsic; culture cannot be defined or investigated without heeding morality, and morality can also not be understood without reference to the culture concept. Secondly, cultural rules complement natural laws in explaining and understanding human activities (behaviors, cognition, affects). Human action (not behaviour) is taken as the empirical and analytical unit for psychology. It serves as an analytical universal and methodically as tertium comparationis. The perspective is discussed by arguing for the centrality of agency, transcultural standards of duty and contextualization of research on moral development.(DIPF/Autor)
