Abstract:
Personalized education - the systematic adaption of instruction to individual learners - has been a long-striven goal. We review research on personalized education that has been conducted in the laboratory, in the classroom, and in digital learning environments. Across all learning environments, we find that personalization is most successful when relevant learner characteristics are measured repeatedly during the learning process and when these data are used to adapt instruction in a systematic way. Building on these observations, we propose a novel, dynamic framework of personalization that conceptualizes learners as dynamic entities that change during and in interaction with the instructional process. As these dynamics manifest on different timescales, so do the opportunities for instructional adaptions - ranging from setting appropriate learning goals at the macroscale to reacting to affective-motivational fluctuations at the microscale. We argue that instructional design needs to take these dynamics into account in order to adapt to a specific learner at a specific point in time. Finally, we provide some examples of successful, dynamic adaptations and discuss future directions that arise from a dynamic conceptualization of personalization. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
One goal of open science is making research processes like analysis more open and traceable. To contribute to this aim, we designed an open digital research environment based on Semantic MediaWiki technology to be used for the qualitative collaborative analysis method of objective hermeneutics. The environment was used in university seminars in which students learned the analysis method in a research based learning setting. This article examines added values of open analysis in learning and teaching of qualitative research methods. It outlines the potentials of the environment like guiding students through digital structures, and retracing the collaborative interpretation processes, but as well discusses the pedagogical boundaries of open online collaborative work.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The present paper deals with the German concept "Individuelle Förderung", which has been widely used in both policy and practice in recent years and may best be translated into "adaptive teaching" or "individualized instruction". The paper first addresses the contexts and ways in which the term has been used. Several related concepts used in educational research and findings from research on learning and instruction are presented. Using these insights, the author proposes to conceptualize "Individuelle Förderung" as an overarching teaching concept in which teachers adapt their instruction to each student's needs and aim to increase students' responsibility for their own learning process. The paper closes with implications of this conceptualization for practice and research. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Emotions and motivation are important prereq-uisites, mediators, and outcomes of learning and achieve-ment. In this article, we first review major theoretical approaches and empirical findings in research on students' emotions and motivation in mathematics, including a dis-cussion of how classroom instruction can support emo-tions and motivation. Based on this review, we encourage researchers from mathematics education and other dis-ciplines of educational research to combine their efforts. Second, we provide an overview of the contributions in this special issue, most of which reflect such a combination of efforts by considering perspectives from both mathematics education and other fields of educational research. Finally, we consider the neglect of intervention studies and outline directions for future research. We identify intervention studies that target emotions and motivation as one promis-ing but so far underrepresented line of research in mathe-matics education and review results from existing interven-tion studies. For future research, we suggest that researchers should implement fine-grained concepts, assessment instru-ments, theoretical hypotheses, and methods of analysis tai-lored to the specific features of the mathematical domain to adequately investigate students' emotions and motivation in this domain.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
The increase of conceptual knowledge, which is applicable to new situations, is one aim of instruction. In this context the question arises how to design appropriate learning situations. In the article at hand we show findings drawn from a quasi-experimental study (N=397) in the 3rd grade, in which we investigate how the similarity or dissimilarity of multiple examples influences the extension of conceptual knowledge. The findings show that learning with dissimilar examples is more beneficial than learning with similar examples. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
An implication of the current research on self-regulation is to implement the promotion of self-regulated learning in schools. Teachers can promote self-regulated learning either directly by teaching learning strategies or indirectly by arranging a learning environment that enables students to practice self-regulation. This study investigates teachers´ direct and indirect promotion of self-regulated learning and its relation to the development of students´ performance. Twenty German mathematics teachers with their overall 538 students (grade 9) were videotaped for a three-lesson unit on the Pythagorean Theorem. Students´ mathematics performance was tested several times before and after the observed lessons. A low- inferent coding system was applied to assess the teachers´ implicit or explicit instruction of cognitive strategies (e.g., organization), metacognitive strategies (e.g., planning), and motivational strategies (e.g., resource management). High- inferent ratings were used to assess features of the learning environment that foster self-regulation. Results reveal that a great amount of strategy teaching takes place in an implicit way, whereas explicit strategy teaching and supportive learning environment are rare. The instruction of organization strategies and some features of the learning environment ( constructivism, transfer) relate positively to students´ performance development. In contrast to implicit strategy instruction, explicit strategy instruction was associated with a gain in performance. These results reveal a discrepancy between the usefulness of explicit strategy instruction and its rare occurrence in classrooms. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Based on a coding of 39 videotaped three-lesson units on the introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem, three teaching patterns were identified: lecturing, developing based on a problem, and discovery based on a problem. The analysis showed no effect of the teaching patterns on student achievement, whereas effects were discovered on students' perceived learning quality. The discovery teaching pattern had negative effects on the emotional quality of learning. However, this pattern exhibited high degree of externally rated cognitive activation. The lecturing approach to the introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem supported students' self- perceived understanding. (DIPF/Orig.)
