Abstract (english):
This paper describes the CPR Tutor, a real-time multimodal feedback system for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. The CPR Tutor detects training mistakes using recurrent neural networks. The CPR Tutor automatically recognises and assesses the quality of the chest compressions according to five CPR performance indicators. It detects training mistakes in real-time by analysing a multimodal data stream consisting of kinematic and electromyographic data. Based on this assessment, the CPR Tutor provides audio feedback to correct the most critical mistakes and improve the CPR performance. The mistake detection models of the CPR Tutor were trained using a dataset from 10 experts. Hence, we tested the validity of the CPR Tutor and the impact of its feedback functionality in a user study involving additional 10 participants. The CPR Tutor pushes forward the current state of the art of real-time multimodal tutors by providing: (1) an architecture design, (2) a methodological approach for delivering real-time feedback using multimodal data and (3) a field study on real-time feedback for CPR training. This paper details the results of a field study by quantitatively measuring the impact of the CPR Tutor feedback on the performance indicators and qualitatively analysing the participants' questionnaire answers. Abstract (english):
For the integral learning/training of a psychomotor activity such as running, it is necessary to target not only the physical aspects but also the technical and mental aspects that make it up, an alternative to solve this issue is through the understanding and consideration of feedback and periodization, which are elements that constitute and influence transcendentally and differently each of the three aspects involved. That is why, in this paper, some of the definitions and classifications commonly used in the study of psychomotor skills are first cited. Likewise, the use of wearable devices is proposed as a multimodal and main technology to analyze both elements since they have provided positive results in the same field of research. Subsequently, important considerations are discussed which could serve as a starting point or a conceptual reference for the correct application and analysis of feedback and periodization in each aspect of running and possibly other similar psychomotor skills. Abstract (english):
Multimodal immersive technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, along with rapidly evolving technologies such as AI and sensors, are redefining human-computer interaction and, consequently, the domain of technology-enhanced learning. Decades ago, the seminal work. "Bloom's 2 sigma problem", led to the inception of the potentialities of "educational technology" for personalised learning. This was immediately followed by an influx of researchers from all domains interested in education exploring various technologies in search of this promised land and the holy grail. In recent years, Ericsson with his seminal work on "deliberate practice", recapitulated much of Bloom's conclusions, giving us an epiphany that not much has changed or been achieved in education. Abstract:
This study investigated to what extent multimodal data can be used to detect mistakes during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. We complemented the Laerdal QCPR ResusciAnne manikin with the Multimodal Tutor for CPR, a multi-sensor system consisting of a Microsoft Kinect for tracking body position and a Myo armband for collecting electromyogram information. We collected multimodal data from 11 medical students, each of them performing two sessions of two-minute chest compressions (CCs). We gathered in total 5254 CCs that were all labelled according to five performance indicators, corresponding to common CPR training mistakes. Three out of five indicators, CC rate, CC depth and CC release, were assessed automatically by the ReusciAnne manikin. The remaining two, related to arms and body position, were annotated manually by the research team. We trained five neural networks for classifying each of the five indicators. The results of the experiment show that multimodal data can provide accurate mistake detection as compared to the ResusciAnne manikin baseline. We also show that the Multimodal Tutor for CPR can detect additional CPR training mistakes such as the correct use of arms and body weight. Thus far, these mistakes were identified only by human instructors. Finally, to investigate user feedback in the future implementations of the Multimodal Tutor for CPR, we conducted a questionnaire to collect valuable feedback aspects of CPR training. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This paper introduces the Visual Inspection Tool (VIT) which supports researchers in the annotation of multimodal data as well as the processing and exploitation for learning purposes. While most of the existing Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA) solutions are tailor-made for specific learning tasks and sensors, the VIT addresses the data annotation for different types of learning tasks that can be captured with a customisable set of sensors in a flexible way. The VIT supports MMLA researchers in 1) triangulating multimodal data with video recordings; 2) segmenting the multimodal data into time-intervals and adding annotations to the time-intervals; 3) downloading the annotated dataset and using it for multimodal data analysis. The VIT is a crucial component that was so far missing in the available tools for MMLA research. By filling this gap we also identified an integrated workflow that characterises current MMLA research. We call this workflow the Multimodal Learning Analytics Pipeline, a toolkit for orchestration, the use and application of various MMLA tools. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
Postural control performances of 18 younger and 18 older adults were repeatedly measured on 45 weekdays with five trials per day. This design made it possible to dissociate between long-term trends and processing fluctuations in the sensorimotor domain at moment-to-moment, trial-to-trial, and day-today levels. Older adults fluctuated more than younger adults at all timescales. Age differences in trial-to-trial and day-to-day processing fluctuations were reduced but remained statistically significant when controlling for fluctuations on faster timescales. We concluded that age differences in intraindividual fluctuations at the longer timescales are in part related to age differences in low-level system robustness, suggesting a cascade of effects across multiple timescales.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Cognitive and neural correlates of developmental dyslexia are reviewed. Beginning with a description of different cognitive and neurobiological theories of developmental dyslexia, findings from post-mortem analyses and from functional and structural imaging studies are discussed. The results indicate that developmental dyslexia is a multidimensional phenomenon involving different cognitive, sensory, and motor problems and appears to be associated with specific disruptions of brain systems. Accordingly, individual profiles of the disorder on the cognitive and neural level should receive more attention in future research.

Abstract (english):
Reading performance has been shown to be linked with balancing skills, possibly indicating an involvement of the cerebellum in reading-related tasks. In our study, we examined whether a similar connection can be detected for arithmetic performance. We assessed basic arithmetic skills of 8 10-year-old children (n 1 4 53) and asked them to balance on the left or right foot, with eyes open or closed. Results revealed substantial correlations between performance in arithmetic tasks and in the balancing tasks with closed eyes even when controlling for attentional and reasoning capabilities. These findings are interpreted in terms of a cerebellar involvement in arithmetic tasks. We propose that verbally medi- ated arithmetic tasks like multiplication might be related to cerebellar functions in different ways than those arithmetic tasks that require elaboration strategies and quantity manipulations, such as subtraction.
