Abstract (english): Teaching practices are pivotal for student learning. Due to pedagogical traditions and national cultures, the structure of teaching practices may differ across countries. This study investigates the structure of teaching practices across 12 countries grouped into four major linguistic/cultural clusters. First, factor analysis is applied to investigate if the theoretical distinction between teacher-directed and student-centred practices is generalizable across countries. Then, network analysis is used to explore how individual classroom assessment practices relate to either teacher-directed or student-centred practices. Main findings include that: (1) teacher-directed and student-centred practices are two distinct factors across countries; (2) the overall structure and connectivity of teaching practices differs across countries, with smaller differences within linguistic/cultural clusters; and (3) assessment practices with the aim to structure and guide learning strongly relate to teacher-directed practices, whereas assessment practices with the aim to individualize instruction more relate to student-centred practices. We discuss the global patterning and implications.

Abstract (english): We are interested in identifying "malleable" school and classroom practices to enhance immigrant students' learning. Using PISA 2015 data from Germany, Italy, and Spain we test the differential associations of school-level practices with achievement and sense of belonging at school for students with and without an immigrant background. We found that (1) in-school ability grouping was invariably, negatively related to achievement of both student groups, and the effects were stronger for immigrant than nonimmigrant students; (3) grading based on "hard" factors was not related to achievement, but it showed differential associations with sense of belonging in Germany; (4) grading based on "soft" factors and provision of extracurricular activities also showed mixed associations with the outcomes across countries and did not fulfil the potential to enhance immigrant students' outcomes. We discuss these findings and implications. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Aspects of open science and scholarly practices are often discussed with a focus on research and research dissemination processes. There is currently less discussion on open science and its influence on learning and teaching in higher education, and reversely. This paper discusses open science in relation to educational practices and resources and reports on a study to investigate current educational practices from the perspective of open science. We argue that offering students opportunities via open educational practices raises their awareness of future open science goals and teaches them the skills needed to reach those goals. We present online survey results from 210 participants with teaching responsibility at higher education institutions in Germany. While some of them try to establish more open learning and teaching settings, the majority applies rather traditional ways of learning and teaching. 60 % do not use open educational resources - many have not even heard of them - nor do they make their courses open for an online audience. Participants' priority lies in resource accuracy and quality and we still see a gap between the benefit of open practices and their practicability and applicability. The paper contributes to the general discussion of open practices in higher education by looking at open science practices and their adaptation into the learning and teaching environment. It formulates recommendations for improvements of open practice support and infrastructure. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): Knowledge and beliefs are two of the main facets of early childhood teacher competencies. The influence of these facets on quality of interaction is widely discussed but only little research has been conducted so far. In our study, we took a closer look at this research gap to find out how knowledge and orientation to knowledge (as a special form of teachers' beliefs) are regressed with interaction quality. Orientation to knowledge is conceptualized in two types-subjective as well as objective orientation-and focuses on the relevance early childhood teachers declare to personal experiences (subjective orientation) or results (objective orientation) for decision making and acting in daily work. The results showed that (theoretical) knowledge of German early childhood teachers (N = 120) predicted the quality of interaction in social und instructional support. Orientation to knowledge had a limited effect on social and instructional support, whereas subjective orientation moderated the effect of knowledge on quality of interaction significantly. Implications of our findings concerning quality in early childhood education are discussed and questions for further research are proposed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The program of evidence-based educational reform is accompanied by the expectation to improve pedagogical practice as well as its political formation based on proven empirical knowledge. However, empirical research as well as field reports confirm a continuing gap between research, politics and practice. Therefore, implementation research is gaining attention, as shown by a growing number of empirical studies and a broad conceptual and methodological debate. This paper reviews the conceptual discussion on implementation research in the education sector and beyond. It also analyzes what implementation studies in the field of organized learning and instruction say about the success conditions for productive implementations of evident interventions. The research overview shows that an increasing number of studies with scientifically sound interventions have contributed to reducing the criticized gap. At the same time, there is still a lack of theoretically sound insights into the institutional, organizational and personal conditions for effective implementation studies.

Abstract (english): Critical thinking is a relevant educational skill that teachers should im- part to their students and use themselves in an evidence-oriented practice to justify their own decisions regarding their professional actions. Critical thinking comprises the ability to argue and integrate different information (i.e. scientific knowledge to experiences). The perception, presentation and weighing of different positions and information points in particular to critical thinking-processes. In this study, we therefore ask the questions (1) whether teachers argue in their written examination of pedagogical situations and, if so, what structure these arguments have, (2) which information they use in dealing with pedagogical situations and (3) if the information used are related to the structure of arguments. We analyzed 87 written disputes of prospective teachers in which they should select, describe and explain a pedagogical situation they encountered. We evaluated these entries with a qualitative-quantifying approach. Argumentation structure (non-argumentation, one-sided argumentation, two-sided argumentation) as well as integration of information (in- ternal, external, internal & external) were examined with a newly developed coding scheme. The results show that prospective teachers argue mainly on the basis of one position; a quarter of students integrate different positions (two-sided argument with arguments and counter-arguments). In addition, students largely use external information (e.g. textbooks) within their written dispute and the ability to argue on two sides is related to the integration of information (combination of intern and extern information). The results will be critically discussed with regard to the consequences for teacher education.
