Abstract (english):
The PISA studies provide unique opportunities to investigate the competencies and attitudes of 15-year-olds across the world. Past research investigating environmental awareness (EA) in PISA 2006 found associations between EA and science-related competencies and attitudes. Investigating EA in the PISA studies may have important implications for education for sustainable development (ESD): results may show which factors should be considered in educational interventions to enhance students' EA. Cross-national analyses of EA may provide insights into the predictors of EA on a local, national or international level. This study investigates the individual, school, and country level predictors of EA in PISA 2015 (365,194 students, 12,594 schools, 53 countries). The multi-level regression analysis on EA reveals that most of the variance is located at the student level. On the individual level, variables related to science learning in school are associated with EA across all countries. This study also compares the degrees of EA in the 2006 and 2015 populations. The results show similar degrees of EA in 2006 and 2015. Altogether, the study provides cross-country evidence on important aspects that should be addressed in successful ESD programs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The goal of environmental education is ultimately to enable a person to strive for and to attain a more ecological way of life. In this article, we begin by distinguishing three forms of environmental knowledge and go on to predict that people's attitude toward nature represents the force that drives their ecological behavioral engagement. Based on data from 1,907 students, we calibrated previously established instruments to measure ecological behavior, environmental knowledge, and attitude toward nature with Rasch-type models. Using path modeling, we corroborated our theoretically anticipated competence structure. While environmental knowledge revealed a modest behavioral effect, attitude toward nature turned out to be, as expected, the stronger determinant of behavior. Overall, we propose a competence model that has the potential to guide us into more evidence-based ways of promoting the overall ecological engagement of individuals. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Agent-based computer simulation was used to create artificial communities in which each individual was constructed according to the principles of the elaboration likelihood model of Petty and Cacioppo [ 1986. The elaboration likelihood model of persuasion. In: Berkowitz, L. ( Ed.), Advances in Experimental Social Psychology. Academic Press, New York, NY, pp. 123-205]. Campaigning strategies and community characteristics were varied systematically to understand and test their impact on attitudes towards environmental protection. The results show that strong arguments influence a green (environmentally concerned) population with many contacts most effectively, while peripheral cues have the greatest impact on a non-green population with fewer contacts. Overall, deeper information scrutiny increases the impact of strong arguments but is especially important for convincing green populations. Campaigns involving person- to-person communication are superior to mass-media campaigns because they can be adapted to recipients' characteristics. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english):
The paper represents further efforts to apply the "types of everyday morality", developed over the last ten years, to another context: farming. The four types were derived partly from empirical studies, partly from theoretical and meta-theoretical arguments. They represent a heteronomous or autonomous way of thinking on two levels of understanding the social sphere (interpersonal and transpersonal). In detail they refer not only to moral orientations, butalso to emotions, understanding of facts, risk taking, concepts of responsibility, control beliefs, solidarity with groups and identity concepts. So their conceptualization is rich, going beyond pure cognitive/ structural arguments. Farming occurs in a complex field of conflicts between economic, ecological and social domains. Two basic strategies of agricultural risk management exist: organic and conventional orientations in farming. The goal of the chapter is a detailed analysis of the morals involved in these farming styles. At first glance they seem to differ morally: often organically working farmers are considered as being more "moral" in a quite general sense (in their treatment of animals, nature and also costumers). To analyse this stereotype more closely ten conventionally and ten organically oriented farmers (self-description), five organically and five conventionally oriented experts (academic training in the field) and five organically and five conventionally oriented decision makers (officials, politicians, entrepreneurs) in the field were interviewed in depth. Basically the results show a complex picture of the two groups, which falsify a simple attribution of the groups to a difference in "moral maturity".(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The main goal of the chapter is to combine the (ontogenetic) theory on the development of moral judgments with environmental issues. From this developmental perspective barriers turn out to be fertile incitement conditions. Additionally, an action theory perspective is taken, which allows one to determine the relationship between economical and ecological "types" of reasoning quite generally on the basis of the barriers involved. Finally four "types of everyday morality" are distinguished empirically and elaborated in terms of their relationship to environmental issues. This is realized by means of concepts like emotions, propositional knowledge, risk, responsibility, control, solidarity and identity formation which are all discussed in terms of their relevance for environmental decisions and their evaluation.
