Abstract (english): The need for more and better online and blended education has lately become even more apparent. Many educational institutions had to pivot to emergency remote teaching. While online learning in itself is nothing new, the scope, suddenness and speed of this shift certainly was. However, courses and modules created for face-to-face settings, cannot simply be turned into blended or fully online ones easily. Learning design models can provide guidelines and guidance. Often, however, they are not constructed in a comprehensive way and are mainly conceptual. We thus created a procedural design model enriched with templates, tools, information and design examples to specifically support and facilitate the (re)design of blended and online learning and teaching and to thus provide quality education: the Design Cycle for Education (DC4E). Abstract (english): Technology has become an indispensable tool for educational and psychological assessment in today's world. Researchers and large-scale assessment programs alike are increasingly using digital technology (e.g., laptops, tablets, and smartphones) to collect behavioral data beyond the mere idea of responses as correct. Along these lines, technology innovates and enhances assessments in terms of item and test design, methods of test delivery, data collection and analysis, as well as the reporting of test results.
The aim of this Research Topic is to present recent advancements in technology-based assessment. Our focus is on cognitive assessments, including the measurement of abilities, competencies, knowledge, and skills but may also include non-cognitive aspects of the assessment. In the area of (cognitive) assessments the innovations driven by technology are manifold: Digital assessments facilitate the creation of new types of stimuli and response formats that were out of reach for assessments using paper; for instance, interactive simulations including multimedia elements, as well as virtual or augmented realities which serve as the task environment. Moreover, technology allows the automated generation of items based on specific item models. Such items can be assembled into tests in a more flexible way than that offered by paper-and-pencil tests and could even be created on the fly; for instance, tailoring item difficulty to individual ability (adaptive testing), while assuring that multiple content constraints are met. As a requirement for adaptive testing or to lower the burden of raters coding item responses manually, computers enable the automatic scoring of constructed responses; for instance, text responses can be scored automatically by using natural language processing and text mining. Technology-based assessments provide not only response data (e.g., correct vs. incorrect responses) but also process data (e.g., frequencies and sequences of test-taking strategies, including navigation behavior) which reflects the course of solving a test item. Process data has been used successfully, among others, to evaluate the data quality, to define process-oriented constructs, to improve measurement precision, and to address substantial research questions.
We expect the contributions of this Research Topic to build on this research by considering how technology can further improve, and enhance, educational and psychological assessment. Regarding educational testing, both research papers on the assessment of learning (e.g., summative assessment of learning outcomes) and on the assessment for learning (e.g., formative assessment to support the learning process) are welcome. We expect submissions of empirical papers that present and evaluate innovative technology-based assessment approaches, as well as new applications or illustrations of already existing approaches. We are also interested in papers addressing the validity of test scores and other indicators obtained from innovative assessment procedures.

Abstract (english): Open informational ecosystems play a crucial role in fostering open educational resources (OER) and allow new opportunities to share and collaborate in the learning and teaching environment. Such ecosystems containing interoperable infrastructures and open interfaces aim at fulfilling user needs and fostering practices related to the concept of OER and the five user rights (5 R's). To fully embrace this role, those ecosystems need to be designed carefully.
In this paper, we discuss implications for open informational ecosystems to fully comprise the concept of OER and related user needs. We carried out literature reviews to analyse recent aspects of the 5 R's in relation to user behaviour and infrastructures. We will introduce the results from these reviews and illustrate upcoming questions and challenges for the design of an ecosystem respecting the 5 R's conceptual ideas. With our recommendations, we aim at contributing to a better understanding of the concept of OER to improve ecosystem development and implement useful and user-friendly functions.

Abstract: The open science movement calls for transparent and retraceable research processes. While infrastructures to support these practices in qualitative research are lacking, the design needs to consider different approaches and workflows. The paper bases on the definition of ontologies as shared conceptualizations of knowledge (Borst, 1999). The authors argue that participatory design is a good way to create these shared conceptualizations by giving domain experts and future users a voice in the design process via interviews, workshops and observations. Abstract: Unequal stakeholder engagement is a common pitfall of adoption approaches of learning analytics in higher education leading to lower buy-in and flawed tools that fail to meet the needs of their target groups. With each design decision, we make assumptions on how learners will make sense of the visualisations, but we know very little about how students make sense of dashboard and which aspects influence their sense-making. We investigated how learner goals and self-regulated learning (SRL) skills influence dashboard sense-making following a mixed-methods research methodology: a qualitative pre-study followed-up with an extensive quantitative study with 247 university students. We uncovered three latent variables for sense-making: transparency of design, reference frames and support for action. SRL skills are predictors for how relevant students find these constructs. Learner goals have a significant effect only on the perceived relevance of reference frames. Knowing which factors influence students' sense-making will lead to more inclusive and flexible designs that will cater to the needs of both novice and expert learners. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Rapid guessing can threaten measurement invariance and the validity of large-scale assessments, which are often conducted under low-stakes conditions. Comparing measures collected under different administration modes or in different test settings necessitates that rapid guessing rates also be comparable. Response time thresholds can be used to identify rapid guessing behavior. Using data from an experiment embedded in an assessment of university students as part of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we show that rapid guessing rates can differ across modes. Specifically, rapid guessing rates are found to be higher for un-proctored individual online assessment. It is also shown that rapid guessing rates differ across different groups of students and are related to properties of the test design. No relationship between dropout behavior and rapid guessing rates was found. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The within-person encouragement design introduced here combines methodological approaches from three research traditions: (a) the analysis of within-person couplings using multilevel models, (b) the experimental manipulation of a treatment variable at the within-person level, and (c) the use of random encouragements as instrumental variables to induce exogenous experimental variation when strict treatment adherence is unrealistic. The proposed combination of these approaches opens up new possibilities to study treatment effects of a broad range of behavioral variables in realistic everyday contexts. We introduce this new research design together with a corresponding data analysis framework: instrumental variable estimation with two-level structural equation models. Using simulations, we show that the approach is applicable with feasible design dimensions regarding numbers of measurement occasions and participants and realistic assumptions about adherence to the encouragement conditions. Possible applications and extensions, as well as potential problems and limitations are discussed. (DIPF(Orig.)
