Abstract (english):
Qualitative science methods have largely been omitted from discussions of open science. Platforms focused on qualitative science that support open science data and method sharing are rare. Sharing and exchanging coding schemas has great potential for supporting traceability in qualitative research as well as for facilitating the reuse of coding schemas. In this study, we present and evaluate QualiCO, an ontology to describe qualitative coding schemas. Twenty qualitative researchers used QualiCO to complete two coding tasks. In our findings, we present task performance and interview data that focus participants' attention on the ontology. Participants used QualiCO to complete the coding tasks, decreasing time on task, while improving accuracy, signifying that QualiCO enabled the reuse of qualitative coding schemas. Our discussion elaborates some issues that participants had and highlights how conceptual and prior practice frames their interpretation of how QualiCO can be used. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The open science movement calls for transparent and retraceable research processes. While infrastructures to support these practices in qualitative research are lacking, the design needs to consider different approaches and workflows. The paper bases on the definition of ontologies as shared conceptualizations of knowledge (Borst, 1999). The authors argue that participatory design is a good way to create these shared conceptualizations by giving domain experts and future users a voice in the design process via interviews, workshops and observations. Abstract:
Qualitative coding schemas are an essential part of qualitative research used in methods like Grounded Theory. To date, there is no platform to share these coding schemas. Sharing and exchanging these coding schemas has a great potential when it comes to the traceability of qualitative research and well as the re-use of coding schemas. Based on an interview study with qualitative researchers, we propose concepts for integrating a new platform for sharing qualitative coding schemas. Based on theoretical work by Birnholtz and Bietz (2002), it became clear that an easy-to-use system can foster the acceptance and the willingness of researchers to share their coding schemas. We identified three major points to focus for this on: the governance of th platform, the development of the ontology itself and integrating the sharing of qualitative coding schemas into the workflow of researchers by enabling direct upload from the qualitative coding software. Abstract:
Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
An overview of recent visual applications in the field of information searching is given. Application settings for information visualization span from small-sized mobile devices to wall-sized high resolution displays, from integrative workplaces for individual use to interactive surfaces for collaborative information seeking activities. The idea of the Blended Library is presented. Possible next stages of library catalogue development are discussed. Finally, some observations regarding the influence of visualization applications on information practice are mentioned. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Environmental gerontology has adopted a social cohesion perspective on social capital, defining social capital as a neighborhood-level characteristic rather than a property of the individual. This chapter will discuss the macro-micro relationship between social capital and healthy ageing by focusing on the role of mediating concepts indicating both the relevance of the perceived socio-physical environment for the person (e.g., urban-related identity) and processes of engagement in the community (e.g., social participation). We consider individuals' subjective definitions of neighborhood boundaries in geographical space in our attempt to assure a valid mapping of person-environment references. Based on both a phenomenological approach and a comprehensive survey with 595 community-dwelling urban citizens (Frankfurt/Main, Germany) stratified by age (70-79 vs. 80-89 years) and household composition (living alone vs. with partner), a variety of constituents of perceived neighborhood in old age are identified that clearly challenge some of the common (census tract-oriented) notions of what defines a neighborhood and point to potential mechanisms of neighboring that have been neglected in most current studies of social capital. On a descriptive level, disparities with respect to aspects of healthy ageing and social participation are described across shared perceived neighborhoods using a multi-level approach. Finally, we test the hypothesis that neighborhood-level social capital moderates the effects of social participation on healthy ageing. The consequences of perceived social capital in the neighborhood for agency and belonging components of ageing in place (i.e., place identity, social participation), and, ultimately, for healthy ageing in urban neighborhoods are revisited. Abstract (english):
The application of collective intelligence in the domain of language yielded collaboratively constructed language resources (CCLR) that can be used in a variety of ways. For example, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other language resources constructed through crowdsourcing such as Games with a Purpose and Mechanical Turk have been used in many ways in NLP. Researchers started using such resources to substitute for or supplement conventional lexical semantic resources such as WordNet or linguistically annotated corpora in different NLP tasks. Another research direction is to utilize NLP techniques to enhance the collaboration process and its outcome. Overall the emergence of CCLRs has generated new challenges to the research field that are to be addressed in the present book. As the research field of CCLRs matures, it has become necessary to summarize a set of results to advance and focus the further research effort.
