Abstract:
Personalized education - the systematic adaption of instruction to individual learners - has been a long-striven goal. We review research on personalized education that has been conducted in the laboratory, in the classroom, and in digital learning environments. Across all learning environments, we find that personalization is most successful when relevant learner characteristics are measured repeatedly during the learning process and when these data are used to adapt instruction in a systematic way. Building on these observations, we propose a novel, dynamic framework of personalization that conceptualizes learners as dynamic entities that change during and in interaction with the instructional process. As these dynamics manifest on different timescales, so do the opportunities for instructional adaptions - ranging from setting appropriate learning goals at the macroscale to reacting to affective-motivational fluctuations at the microscale. We argue that instructional design needs to take these dynamics into account in order to adapt to a specific learner at a specific point in time. Finally, we provide some examples of successful, dynamic adaptations and discuss future directions that arise from a dynamic conceptualization of personalization. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Misconceptions about scientific concepts often prevail even if learners are confronted with conflicting evidence. This study tested the facilitative role of surprise in children's revision of misconceptions regarding water displacement in a sample of German children (N = 94, aged 6-9 years, 46% female). Surprise was measured via the pupil dilation response. It was induced by letting children generate predictions before presenting them with outcomes that conflicted with their misconception. Compared to a control condition, generating predictions boosted children's surprise and led to a greater revision of misconceptions (d = 0.56). Surprise further predicted successful belief revision during the learning phase. These results suggest that surprise increases the salience of a cognitive conflict, thereby facilitating the revision of misconceptions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Previous studies mostly examined the role of orthographic knowledge in basic reading processing (i.e., word-reading), however, regarding higher reading processing (i.e., sentence- and text-comprehension), mixed results were reported. In addition, previous research in transparent languages, such as German, focused mostly on typically skilled readers. The aim of this study was to examine the role of orthographic knowledge in basic reading processing (word-reading) as well as in higher reading processing (sentence- and text-comprehension), in addition to phonological awareness and naming speed in a sample of German elementary school poor readers. For this purpose, data from 103 German third-graders with poor reading proficiency were analyzed via multiple linear regression analysis. Analyses revealed that orthographic knowledge contributes to reading at word- and sentence-level, but not at text-level in German third-graders with poor reading proficiency, over and above phonological awareness and naming speed. These findings support that orthographic knowledge should be considered as a relevant reading related predictor. Therefore, it would be reasonable to include the assessment of orthographic knowledge skills in diagnostic procedures to identify children at risk to develop reading difficulties, besides phonological awareness and naming speed.

Abstract (english):
The link between the body and mind has fascinated philosophers and scientists for ages. The increasing availability of sensor technologies has enabled the possibility to explore this link even deeper, providing some evidence that certain physiological measurements such as galvanic skin response can have in the performance of different learning activities. In this paper, we explore the link between learners' performance of cognitive tasks and their physiological state with the use of Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA). We used MMLA tools and techniques to collect, annotate, and analyze physiological data from 16 participants wearing an Empatica E4 wristband while engaging in task-switching cognitive exercises. The collected data include temperature, blood volume pulse, heart rate variability, galvanic skin response, and screen recording from each participant while performing the exercises. To examine the link between cognitive performance we applied a preliminary qualitative analysis to galvanic skin response and tested different Artificial Intelligence techniques to differentiate between productive and unproductive performance. Abstract (english):
This paper describes open learning and teaching materials, so-called open educational resources (OER), as visualizing, economic and normative objects, and classifies these into a plenum with interwoven practices and arrangements of material (Schatzki). The plenum determines how the actors, their socio-material practices, and the associated political and technical frameworks each generate different interpretations of OER for the actors. The discussion is based on a case study of a video platform providing academic content. The empirical example, studied via document analysis and content analysis, of the TIB AV portal as an educational infrastructure offering videos of scientific conferences and teaching as an online service shows how the normative requirements to open educational resources are produced by the infrastructure. The paper focuses on the argument that the normative dimension of OER be part of material arrangements. The normative OER model is implemented in the infrastructure, while the social norms of openness are provided by the service. OER in terms of normative objects embodying the norm of openness are produced performatively through repositories. (DIPF/Orig.)
