Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Several studies converge on the view that children with learning difficulties (LD) have a lower academic self-concept than children without LD. However, whether the influence of specific learning difficulties on academic self-concept is domain-specific or domain-general it is still at issue. Therefore, this longitudinal study examined the academic self-concept of 77 typically developing children and 236 children with specific learning difficulties in reading, spelling and/or mathematics. The children's self-concept in reading, spelling and mathematics was assessed at the beginning and the end of the children's last year in elementary school. The study revealed three important findings: First, in line with the domain-specific hypothesis, children with LD showed a lower self-perception of academic skills only in those domains in which they were low achieving. Second, children with specific learning difficulties in either reading or spelling exhibited a lower academic self-concept in both verbal domains, which suggests that they did not differentiate between their skills in reading and spelling. Last, children's self-concept in spelling and mathematics decreased significantly in the course of a school year. Overall, the children showed a sophisticated self-perception of their individual strengths and weaknesses at the end of primary school. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The present study investigates the implementation fidelity of peer-assisted learning in primary school science education by trained teachers. When applying a manual, teachers showed higher implementation fidelity compared to a condition that required independent transfer to a closely related content. Implementation fidelity was linked to cognitive and social variables on class level, but not to class size. Conclusions for professional development are discussed.

Abstract:
In assessing verbal academic self-concept with preadolescents, researchers have used scales for students' self-concepts in reading and in their native language interchangeably. The authors conducted 3 studies with German students to test whether reading and German (i.e., native language) self-concepts can be treated as the same or different constructs. Compared with other facets of academic self-concept, reading self-concept was more highly related to reading test scores (Study 1) and German self-concept to German grades (Study 2). In Study 3, reading and general school self-concepts demonstrated similar relations to German grades. The findings of the 3 studies, albeit indirect, supported the specificity matching principle and caution researchers against applying reading and native language self-concept scales uncritically to infer verbal self-concept.

Abstract (english):
In Germany, 35 % of children under the age of five have a migration background. Many of them acquire German as a second language (GSL). Until today, little is known about the development of early reading skills in these children. The aim of the present study was to compare the development of decoding speed and reading comprehension from Grade 1 to Grade 3 in GSL and native German speaking children. The study especially focused on children who showed poor decoding speed in Grade 1. Results indicated an increase in the achievement gap in measures of reading comprehension between the two language groups. In decoding speed, GSL children showed a tendency toward improving less than their native German speaking peers. In Grade 1 as well as in Grade 3, a large proportion of GSL children showed reading performances which placed them in the lowest 15 % of the test norms: At each of the measurement points, the proportion of GSL poor decoders and GSL poor reading comprehenders was twice as high as expected by test norms and substantially higher than in native German speaking children. Furthermore, results indicated that the discrepancy between measures of nonverbal intelligence and reading performance is not a reliable indicator for specific reading disabilities in GSL children.

Abstract:
The goals of this study were to explore the deficits in working memory associated with literacy disorders (i.e. developmental disorders of reading and/or spelling) and the developmental trajectories of these working memory deficits. The performance of 28 children with literacy disorders was compared to a non-disabled control group with the same group size at five bi-annual times of measurement in a three-year-longitudinal study beginning at the end of primary school (9.5 years of age). Storage capacity and central-executive working memory were assessed in phonological and visual-spatial modalities, the latter under static and dynamic conditions. Overall, children with literacy disorders were outperformed by their typical developing peers in all phonological and in dynamic visual-spatial storage and central-executive tasks except for the static visual-spatial storage task. Results at single times of measurement revealed that the most consistent deficit was found in the storage capacity of the phonological loop. An additional central-executive impairment is supported by low backward spans. The causes for output deficits in dynamic visual-spatial tasks and good performance under static visual-spatial condition are discussed.

Abstract:
The acceleration phenomenon (AP) is defined by improvements in reading speed and reading comprehension, induced by an artificial text fading procedure corresponding to the previously determined fastest individual reading rate. Recent results, however, indicated that fading that is slower than the self-paced reading rate can produce comparable reading enhancements. As reading performance can be strongly influenced by the reading material, this study aimed at investigating to which extent reading enhancements induced by text fading depend on the reading material's characteristics. We confronted 39 German third graders with a previously utilized text fading procedure, which was slower than their self-paced reading rate. Included text varied regarding to the lexical accessibility (LA), representing how well information can be accessed from the mental lexicon. Children's reading rates increased statistically significant due to text fading for all LA levels. However, reading comprehension was sensitive to the text material's characteristics: Reading comprehension enhancements were observable for easily accessible reading material, but not for material with intermediate or difficult levels of LA. Material that was difficult to retrieve from the mental lexicon even resulted in reduced reading comprehension in the fading condition. Possible influences on immediate lexical access, the impact of working memory capacity and implications for future AP research are discussed.

Abstract:
The assessment of a person's traits is a fundamental problem in human sciences. Compared to traditional paper & pencil tests, computer based assessments not only facilitate data acquisition and processing but also allow for adaptive and personalized tests so that competency levels are assessed with fewer items. We focus on speeded tests and propose a mathematically sound framework in which latent competency skills are represented by belief distributions on compact intervals. Our algorithm updates belief based on directional feedback; adaptation rate and difficulty of the task at hand can be controlled by user-defined parameters. We provide a rigorous theoretical analysis of our approach and report on empirical results on simulated and real world data, including concentration tests and the assessment of reading skills. Abstract:

Abstract:
Reading demands precise and efficient letter and word processing. This event-related potentials (ERP) study utilized massive repetition of visually presented single letters to trigger neuronal adaptation. Our aim was to explore whether the adaptation pattern of the N170 ERP component, serving as an indicator of neuronal response specificity, would differ for two reader groups. Forty German students, divided at the median into slow and fast readers, accomplished a visual oddball paradigm. ERPs of standard stimuli were computed separately for the first, second, and third part of the experiment. ERP waveforms and independent component analyses showed two subcomponents within the N170 time window. For both reader groups, the ERP amplitudes decreased over the time course of the experiment; however, only faster readers showed a subcomponent-specific adaptation response, restricted to the earlier N170 part. Results may reflect different degrees of neuronal response specificity in slow and fast readers, which might serve as a promising indicator for interindividual differences in visual recognition tasks such as reading.

Abstract:
In a cross-sectional study, we examined the relationship between the quality of lexical representations and text comprehension skill in German primary school children (Grades 1-4). We measured the efficiency and accuracy of orthographical, phonological, and meaning representations by means of computerized tests. Text comprehension skill was assessed with a standardized reading test with questions requiring recognition of text information and inferencing. Both the accuracy of and the efficiency of access to the three types of lexical representations contributed to explaining interindividual variation in text comprehension skill. Results from a path-analytic model suggest a specific causal order of the three components of lexical quality with the quality of meaning representations partly mediating the effects of form representations.
