Abstract: Pädagogische Überzeugungen von Lehrkräften sind ein zentraler Aspekt ihrer professionellen Kompetenz, der für Schul- und Unterrichtsqualität bedeutsam ist. In dieser Studie wird untersucht, mit welchen Unterrichtsmerkmalen allgemeine pädagogische Überzeugungen von Lehrkräften zusammenhängen und wie diese Überzeugungen, vermittelt über das Unterrichtshandeln, mit Lernergebnissen von Schülerinnen und Schülern korrespondieren. Dies geschieht durch eine Sekundäranalyse der Drei-Länder-Studie von Helmut Fend aus den Jahren 1978/79. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Beziehungen zwischen allgemeinpädagogischen Überzeugungen, Unterricht und Lernergebnissen unter Berücksichtigung des aktuellen theoretischen und methodischen Forschungsstandes zu analysieren. Es zeigt sich, dass im Englischunterricht die pädagogischen Überzeugungen der Lehrkräfte mit einem unterstützenden Unterrichtsklima und - vermittelt über adaptives Unterrichtshandeln - mit den Lernergebnissen der Schülerinnen und Schüler im affektiven Bereich zusammenhängen.

Abstract (english): This paper presents the development of an instrument for the assessment of system competence in the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Based on an already existing, more complex model of system competence for the school subject geography, we have developed a test that refers to central themes and principles of ESD using exclusively closed answer formats. Building on the results of cognitive laboratories and expert feedback from various fields, the instrument was (further) developed in an iterative process of feedback and revision. We conducted a quantitative pilot study with N = 366 8th and 9th grade students. The results indicate that the development of our system competence test was successful-the overall test yielded a high reliability and only very few items were not working as intended. Furthermore, the difficulties of the items were appropriate for the ability levels of the students and the results of a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggest that the newly developed test measures system competence with one dimension. As the test is compact, easy to interpret, and yet reliable, it is particularly suitable for monitoring purposes in the field of ESD.

Abstract: Aim: Personality traits and cognitive ability are well‐established predictors of academic performance. Yet, how consistent and generalizable are the associations between personality, cognitive ability, and performance? Building on theoretical arguments that trait-performance relations should vary depending on the demands and opportunities for trait expression in the learning environment, we investigated whether the associations of personality (Big Five) and cognitive ability (fluid intelligence) with academic performance (grades and tests scores) vary across school subjects (German and math) and across ability‐grouped school tracks (academic, intermediate, and vocational). Method: Multiple group structural equation models in a large representative sample of ninth‐grade students (N = 12,915) from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Results: Differential associations across school subjects emerged for cognitive ability, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness (math > German); and for Openness and Extraversion (German > math). Differential associations across school tracks emerged for cognitive ability, Conscientiousness (academic > intermediate > vocational) and Agreeableness (academic > intermediate > vocational). Personality traits explained more variation in academic performance in the academic than in the other tracks. Conclusion: Most trait-performance relations varied across subjects, tracks, or both. These findings highlight the need for more nuanced and context‐minded perspective on trait-performance relations. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Bei der Drei-Länder-Studie (DLS) von Helmut Fend handelt es sich um eine in den Jahren 1978/79 im Auftrag der Kultusministerien von Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen und Niedersachsen durchgeführte Schulleistungstudie, die ursprünglich den Vergleich von Gesamtschulen mit Schulen des traditionellen Schulsystems zum Ziel hatte. Das vorliegende Skalenhandbuch dokumentiert die Erhebungsinstrumente eines neu aufbereiteten Datensatzes, der die Befragung und Testung von Schülerinnen und Schülern aus 9. Klassen sowie deren Lehrkräfte umfasst. Dieser Datensatz ermöglicht weitergehende Analysen zur Schul- und Unterrichtsqualität unter Berücksichtigung der sozialen und leistungsmäßigen Zusammensetzung der Schülerschaften auf Schul- und auf Unterrichtsebene (Heterogenität) sowie in Abhängigkeit von lehr-lernbezogenen Einstellungen der Lehrkräfte. Schwerpunkte der Erhebung bildeten Angaben zum Englisch- und zum Mathematikunterricht inklusive entsprechender Fachleistungstests, verschiedene Einstellungen von Lehrkräften, Klassen- und Schulklima sowie soziale Hintergrundmerkmale der Schülerinnen und Schüler, deren Leistungsängste, Attributionen und Aspirationen sowie elterliche Unterstützung. Abstract (english): Although formative assessment is regarded as a promising way to improve teaching and learning, there is considerable need for research on precisely how it influences student learning. In this study we developed and implemented a formative assessment intervention for mathematics instruction and investigated whether it had effects on students' interest and achievement directly and via students' perception of the usefulness of the feedback and their self-efficacy. We conducted a cluster randomized field trial with pretest and posttest. The 26 participating classes were randomly assigned to a control group or the intervention group. Results of path analyses indicate that feedback was perceived as more useful in the formative assessment condition, self-efficacy was greater, and interest tended to increase; learning progress did not differ between the groups. The assumed indirect effects were partly confirmed: formative assessment showed an indirect effect on interest via its perceived usefulness. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model assumes the interplay of social and dimensional comparisons in the formation of domain-specific academic self-concepts. The present study tests the generalizability of the I/E model assumptions across students from different ability tracks. While the findings from previous studies implied the similar use of social comparisons with students from different ability tracks, evidence has been missing so far whether students from different ability tracks apply dimensional comparisons to the same extent. Students from lower ability tracks are said to be confronted with negative stereotypes and felt deprivation which might enforce or weaken the use of dimensional comparisons. For the analyses, students from the academic track (N = 702) and the vocational track (N = 528) of German secondary schools were included as these two groups represent two extreme groups of ability tracks which might thus maximize the power of detecting differences in the use of social and dimensional comparisons. Both the original I/E model only including math and verbal achievement and self-concepts measures and an I/E model extended to five school subjects (math, German, English, physics, and biology) were examined. The results indicated invariance across school tracks for both the original I/E model and the extended I/E model when controlling for students' gender, socioeconomic status, and cognitive ability.
