Abstract:
In assessing verbal academic self-concept with preadolescents, researchers have used scales for students' self-concepts in reading and in their native language interchangeably. The authors conducted 3 studies with German students to test whether reading and German (i.e., native language) self-concepts can be treated as the same or different constructs. Compared with other facets of academic self-concept, reading self-concept was more highly related to reading test scores (Study 1) and German self-concept to German grades (Study 2). In Study 3, reading and general school self-concepts demonstrated similar relations to German grades. The findings of the 3 studies, albeit indirect, supported the specificity matching principle and caution researchers against applying reading and native language self-concept scales uncritically to infer verbal self-concept.

Abstract (english):
Although the provision of extracurricular activities at school has a long tradition in some countries, it was only at the beginning of the millennium that the quality of education and extracurricular activities started to receive increased attention in educational policy and practice in Europe. In 2003, for example, the "all-day school" started to be promoted in Germany and the number of these schools was expanded across the nation. At the same time, "the integrated school day" with organized extracurricular activities as a part of school had just been introduced in Finland with the goal of decreasing the amount of time children spend unsupervised. A similar development can be identified around this time in England, where "extended services" were provided, including extracurricular activities at schools, in an attempt to build cooperation between schools and families. In Switzerland there have been similar changes to the school system over the past decade whereas in the United States of America this development began in the 1990s. In most of the countries represented in this special issue of the Journal for Educational Research Online extracurricular enrichment is offered in schools in the form of after-school activities. The purpose of this special issue is to connect and add to American research in the field by presenting and discussing empirical results on the conditions and characteristics of after-school programs that contribute to a positive development of children and adolescents.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
According to the stage-environment fit approach, the development of motivation is influenced by the fit between learning context and basic needs (i.e., the needs for autonomy, competence, and social relatedness). It is supposed that school-based extracurricular activities are especially suitable for fostering motivation and, thus, achievement by providing developmentally appropriate learning contexts. Until now, the influence of need fulfillment in extracurricular activities on school attachment and achievement has not been investigated. The aim of this study is to examine these relationships in German all-day schools and to explore the specific impact of each need across age. The longitudinal research sample consists of more than 3,000 students in Grades 5, 7 and 9. The students' perceptions of autonomy, competence (challenge) and social relatedness (student-staff-relationship) are analyzed as predictors of school attachment and achievement (i.e., grades). A conditional growth curve model reveals that the three quality features influence school attachment across age, but barely relate to achievement. Student-staff-relationship proves to be the most influential predictor in all age groups. However, the development of school attachment significantly influences achievement. Thus, promoting school attachment by means of high quality extracurricular activities should lead to the positive development of academic achievement.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The cooperation between school and family is an integral part of teachers' daily routine. One key challenge is to respond adequately to the different family contexts, which become particularly visible in how parents get involved in their children's homework. This paper analyzes the connection between family background and parental involvement in homework on the basis of data from 1685 students in Switzerland. We were able to find correlations between family background, especially immigrant background, and parental involvement in homework. The authors close by discussing some implications of the findings for teacher education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In this chapter, school climate variables are employed in order to explore school principals' influence on student achievement through the Pashiardis-Brauckmann Holistic Leadership Framework. The aim is to identify the mechanisms through which leadership influences student learning. For the purposes of the LISA project, a number of school climate variables were used as mediating variables between the principal's leadership styles and student achievement. All analyses pointed towards a model comprising seven such mediating factors. The seven school climate factors were labeled as follows: professional development opportunities, evaluation and feedback, teacher commitment, parental involvement, teaching and learning practices, student-teacher interactions, and student expectations. Then, an analysis was performed that examined the degree to which school leadership styles reliably predicted school climate variables. The findings suggest that the instructional, the structuring, and the entrepreneurial leadership styles are utilized by school principals in order to enhance student achievement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
For a long time now, the more or less undisputed fact that education can mark a crucial moment - both as cause and as consequence - in the societal reproduction of social inequality has led to a significant intensification and methodological differentiation of research in this field. But while some reveal diverse statistical correlations between socio-economic background and school achievement and others describe the fit of background culture and learning culture from a socio-scientific perspective, there is a remarkable lack of educational-scientific studies examining the question of how classroom practices produce which hierarchical differences among students in the form of achievement-related differences. Based on the assumption that academic achievement is not simply given and merely adequately recorded, but rather has to be created anew in each case, the authors develop a practice-theoretically oriented, methodological proposal for the investigation of pedagogical systems of difference as systems of achievement. Drawing on ethnographic studies on heterogeneity and difference, the thesis of a socially selective production of school achievement as the "re-staging" of social differences in academic achievement is sketched and its theoretical plausibility is discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In Germany, the number of schools offering extracurricular activities and extended daily hours (referred to as "all-day schools") is increasing. Between 2003 and 2009, converting and equipping schools to the all-day format has been financially supported by the investment program "Zukunft Bildung und Betreuung" (IZBB) - [Future of Education and Care]. The "Study on the Development of All-day Schools" (Studie zur Entwicklung von Ganztagsschulen, StEG) was designed to evaluate the effects of the all-day school program. In this paper, StEG is described and an overview of its important results is provided. The political and societal motives leading to the introduction of all-day schools in Germany are considered, as well as scientific evidence regarding the effects of all-day schools . It is assumed that the introduction of all-day schools promotes development in at least three areas: family-life, school effectiveness and student learning. In this paper, data to support these assumptions is presented.

Abstract (english):
Educators and researchers attempt to design and implement successful intervention programs to enhance students' academic motivation and self-concept as important non-cognitive determinants of student achievement and long-term gains. Nevertheless, despite the goodwill and effort, such programs are often faced with issues and challenges. In this chapter, we first discuss the potentials, opportunities, and expected outcomes of such intervention programs. Then we discuss and attempt to address the issues, challenges, and limitations of such programs by illustrating them with examples of evidence-based intervention programs we have conducted in various educational areas including: language, mathematics, cooperative learning, peer support, and anti-bullying. The discussions and illustrations are based on recent advances in self-concept and motivation theory and research. Theory, such as the reciprocal effects model demonstrating the mutually reinforcing relations between academic self-concept and academic achievement, provides the opportunity for designing a dual approach with attention to both self-concept and achievement in the program. The research on internally focused and attributional feedback mechanisms provides the potential of reinforcing self-concept for long-term positive gains. Nevertheless, research findings indicating a general pattern of decrease in self-concept over time constitute a prevalent issue and a challenge to any intervention that attempts to facilitate a significant and noticeable increase. Recent emphasis on the twofold multidimensional structure of academic self-concept implying that intervention programs should target a specific domain and should address both the cognitive and affective components of self-concept further complicates the design and implementation of programs. A further challenge is the occurrence of diffusion effects that might mask the difference between the experimental (target) group and the control group, thus undermining the effectiveness of the intervention. Other issues include: students' cognitive abilities, age, frame of references, and differential gender perceptions. These issues and challenges are illustrated in the light of our previously conducted self-concept enhancement programs in educational settings.
