Abstract (english):
Two intensive longitudinal studies examining the association between children's feeling of relatedness to peers at school and their affective well‐being were performed. In Study 1, 110 third and fourth graders reported on their positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) 4 times daily and on their peer relatedness once a day over 4 weeks. Multilevel analyses revealed that children who reported higher peer relatedness on average also reported higher PA and lower NA (between‐person associations). Moreover, on days when children reported higher peer relatedness than usual, they also reported higher PA, but they did not necessarily report lower NA (within‐person associations). In Study 2, 55 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders indicated their PA, NA, and peer relatedness once a day over 2 weeks. We replicated the findings of Study 1 on both levels. The studies showed that feeling related to peers is associated with high PA at school and at home on a daily basis, illustrating the function of peer relatedness in promoting positive well‐being. The findings further demonstrated the necessity of intensive longitudinal studies focusing on within‐person associations and the importance of measuring both PA and NA in order to capture effects on affective well‐being thoroughly. Abstract:
Learning throughout the life span relies more and more on using information and communication technology (ICT) to acquire new knowledge and skills in both formal and informal learning environments. Thus, learning to use ICT and using ICT to learn have become major premises for successful participation in educational, professional, social, cultural, and civic life. To keep pace with the rapid development of ICT, people need to be able to update their ICT knowledge and skills continuously. A major conditioning personal characteristic that affects the development and adaptation of ICT skills in a self-regulated way is considered to be ICT engagement. This chapter descibes the conceptual origins of this multifaceted construct. At the behavioral level it represents the use of ICT in various contexts, such as at home or school. Most importantly, from a cognitive-motivational perspective it covers the factors that foster the self-determined and self-regulated use of ICT, such as interest in ICT, ICT self-concept, perceived autonomy in ICT use, and social relatedness in using ICT. Abstract (english):
Assessing and measuring students' social background characteristics and relating their background data to achievement is pervasive in international large-scale assessments (ILSAs). Our review focuses on two strains of research: the use of socio-economic status (SES) on the one hand, and the use of cultural and social capital on the other. With regard to SES, we provide a brief overview of theoretical concepts, contrasting unidimensional and multidimensional views. We discuss the variety of measures of SES that researchers use in their studies, highlighting the lack of consensus on their conceptual meaning and measurement. We then outline how key indicators of SES (e.g., parental occupation, parental education, parental income) are assessed in ILSAs. This is followed by a section on the quality of students' reports of parent's SES characteristics. With regard to cultural and social capital we discuss the mechanisms that underlie the relationship between social background and students' achievement. In addition, we give a brief overview of research applying the theory of cultural and social capital in the context of ILSAs. Finally, practical implications for the assessment of social background characteristics in ILSA are discussed, and recommendations are offered. Some of these background characteristics were tested in the PISA 2015 field trial. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is of immense importance in today's digital knowledge society. As a basis for private and vocational participation in society, ICT literacy has been widely discussed in recent decades. Although motivational and metacognitive facets play an important role in developing ICT literacy and competence, studies assessing media, computer or ICT literacy often fail to present a comprehensive concept on these motivational and metacognitive facets. This article addresses this issue by integrating them into the concept of ICT engagement. Its theoretically deduced dimensions of ICT-related interest, self-concept related to the use of ICT, and social exposure to ICT were analyzed in an explorative study assessing N = 445 students aged between 14 and 17 years in the German federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The obtained dimensional structure included the assumed factors, and suggested to distinguish a positive and a negative self-concept on using ICT as well as to separate interest in computers and interest in mobile devices factor. The ICT engagement dimensions were related to individual differences in behavioral, cognitive and emotional ICT constructs as expected. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Analyzing and assessing the quality of classroom lessons on a range of quality dimensions is a number one educational research topic, as this allows developing teacher trainings and interventions to improve lesson quality. We model this assessment as a text classification task, exploiting linguistic features to predict the scores in several lesson quality dimensions relevant for educational researchers. Our work relies on a variety of phenomena, amongst them paralinguistic features, such as laughter, from real classroom interactions. We used these features to train machine learning models to assess various quality dimensions of school lessons. Our results show, that especially features focusing on the discourse and semantics are beneficial for this classification task. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a wide variety of interpersonal problems. We examined whether there are different characteristic interpersonal patterns in BPD and how these patterns are related to symptom distress and therapeutic alliance. In 228 inpatients with diagnoses of BPD, interpersonal subtypes based on the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (Horowitz et al., Inventar zur Erfassung Interpersonaler Probleme, 2000) were examined through cluster analyses. The global symptom severity and therapeutic alliance were also assessed. We identified five characteristic interpersonal patterns, which we labeled as follows: Cluster 1, "Vindictive"; Cluster 2, "Moderate Submissive"; Cluster 3, '"Nonassertive"; Cluster 4, "Exploitable"; and Cluster 5, "Socially Avoidant". The clusters differed significantly in terms of interpersonal distress, interpersonal differentiation, and severity of global symptoms. The ratings of the therapeutic alliance by therapists during treatment significantly differed between the interpersonal subtypes, and the lowest ratings for patients were in the ''Socially Avoidant'' cluster. Our results stress the impact of interpersonal style on the appearance and treatment of BPD.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Many social interactions require the synchronization - be it automatically or intentionally - of one s own behavior with that of others. Using a dyadic drumming paradigm, the authors delineate lifespan differences in interpersonal action synchronization (IAS). Younger children, older children, younger adults, and older adults in same- and mixed-age dyads were instructed to drum in synchrony with their interaction partner at a constant, self-chosen tempo. Adult-only dyads showed the highest and children only the lowest levels of IAS accuracy. It is important to note that children improved reliably in IAS accuracy when paired with older partners. The observed age-related differences in IAS accuracy remained reliable after statistically controlling for individual differences in the ability to synchronize to a metronome and for between-dyad differences in tempo. The authors conclude that IAS improves from middle childhood to adulthood and that adult interaction partners may facilitate its development.
