Abstract (english):
Prior research has shown that socialization agents such as parents, peers, and teachers can play a significant role in adolescents' educational outcomes, both through direct support or indirectly via supportive attitudes that foster students' bonding to school and academic motivation. However, less is known about the effects of parent and peer supportive attitudes and teacher autonomy support on unfavorable educational outcomes such as school alienation. This study investigated the role of socialization agents in the development of school alienation among 544 secondary school students in Switzerland and 535 secondary school students in Luxembourg in grades 7 to 9. Results of structural equation modeling showed that the role of socialization agents varies across the school alienation domains and educational contexts, with peers having the most substantial impact on all three domains of alienation in both countries. Abstract:
As knowledge derived from scientific theory can be helpful for teachers to reflect on their everyday teaching, universities have the challenging task of teaching this knowledge in such a way that pre-service teachers are able to apply it to their later teaching. Case-based learning has emerged as a promising method to foster pre-service teachers' scientific knowledge application throughout university teacher education. However, surprisingly, empirical evidence for its effectiveness as compared to more traditional instructional interventions in teacher education is still inconclusive, partly being due to constraints concerning the employed comparison groups. The present quasi-experimental study (conducted in the field of classroom management) investigated the effect of studying exactly the same theoretical content with and without text-based cases on scientific knowledge application (as measured by a vignette test) in a sample of 101 pre-service teachers. Although the study found a small advantage for the case-based learning group, it demonstrated that scientific knowledge application may also be effectively fostered in a more traditional instructional course. The findings and their implications are discussed against the background of cognitive theories on inert knowledge and how to prevent it in teacher education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This study analyses the quality of 28 OGPs, 18 on the city level, 7 on the state level, and 3 at the national level. The focus of this study is on identifying and analyzing the gap in open educational data. While the portals contain 94% 'open' datasets, most of the portals do not provide comprehensive usage metrics like the data download, evidence of usage in research or applications. Finally, the paper highlights the main shortcomings of the existing open data portals regarding the quality of datasets and the lack of findability and granularity. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Early experiences of childhood sexual or physical abuse are often associated with functional impairments, reduced well-being and interpersonal problems in adulthood. Prior studies have addressed whether the traumatic experience itself or adult psychopathology is linked to these limitations. To approach this question, individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and healthy individuals with and without a history of child abuse were investigated. We used global positioning system (GPS) tracking to study temporal and spatial limitations in the participants' real-life activity space over the course of one week. The sample consisted of 228 female participants: 150 women with PTSD and emotional instability with a history of child abuse, 35 mentally healthy women with a history of child abuse (healthy trauma controls, HTC) and 43 mentally healthy women without any traumatic experiences in their past (healthy controls, HC). Both traumatized groups-i.e. the PTSD and the HTC group-had smaller movement radii than the HC group on the weekends, but neither spent significantly less time away from home than HC. Some differences between PTSD and HC in movement radius seem to be related to correlates of PTSD psychopathology, like depression and physical health. Yet group differences between HTC and HC in movement radius remained even when contextual and individual health variables were included in the model, indicating specific effects of traumatic experiences on activity space. Experiences of child abuse could limit activity space later in life, regardless of whether PTSD develops. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In educational assessments, item difficulties are typically assumed to be invariant across groups (e.g., schools or countries). We refer to variances of item difficulties on the group level violating this assumption as random group differential item functioning (RG-DIF). We examine the performance of three methods to estimate RG-DIF: (1) three-level Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs), (2) three-level GLMMs with anchor items, and (3) item-wise multilevel logistic regression (ML-LR) controlling for the estimated trait score. In a simulation study, the magnitude of RG-DIF and the covariance of the item difficulties on the group level were varied. When group level effects were independent, all three methods performed well. With correlated DIF, estimated variances on the group level were biased with the full three-level GLMM and ML-LR. This bias was more pronounced for ML-LR than for the full three-level GLMM. Using a three-level GLMM with anchor items allowed unbiased estimation of RG-DIF.

Abstract (english):
Rapid guessing can threaten measurement invariance and the validity of large-scale assessments, which are often conducted under low-stakes conditions. Comparing measures collected under different administration modes or in different test settings necessitates that rapid guessing rates also be comparable. Response time thresholds can be used to identify rapid guessing behavior. Using data from an experiment embedded in an assessment of university students as part of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we show that rapid guessing rates can differ across modes. Specifically, rapid guessing rates are found to be higher for un-proctored individual online assessment. It is also shown that rapid guessing rates differ across different groups of students and are related to properties of the test design. No relationship between dropout behavior and rapid guessing rates was found. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
In the past few years, the number of alternatively certified teachers has steadily increased. For this reason, the present study aims to compare the professional competence of alternatively certified teachers and traditional certified teachers in the induction phase (Vorbereitungsdienst). The data originates from the COACTIV-R project, in which 770 traditionally certified teachers and 72 alternatively certified teachers were surveyed and tested. Multivariate covariance analyses show that alternatively certified and traditionally certified teachers demonstrate similar content and pedagogical content knowledge, but differ in their pedagogical-psychological knowledge. No differences were found in regard to motivation and beliefs. In addition, findings show significant differences in self-regulation between the two groups. The results will be discussed with regard to current findings regarding teacher training and recruitment of teachers. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
We compared two approaches towards assessing inter-individual differences in the effect of satisfaction and frustration of basic needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) on well-being: perceived need effects (beliefs about the effect of need fulfillment on one's well-being) and experienced need effects (the within-person coupling of need fulfillment and well-being). In two studies (total N = 1281), participants reported perceived need effects in a multidimensional way. In Study 2, daily need fulfillment and affective well-being were additionally assessed (daily-diary study; ten days). Associations between perceived and experienced need effects were significant (albeit small) for all three frustration dimensions, but only for one satisfaction dimension (relatedness), suggesting that they capture different constructs and might be related to different outcomes. Abstract:
Expectancy-value theory (EVT) is a popular framework to understand and improve students' motivation. Unfortunately, limited research has verified whether EVT predictions generalize to students with low levels of cognitive ability. This study relies on Grade 5 and 8 data from 177 students with low levels of cognitive ability and a matched sample of 177 students with average to high cognitive ability from the German "Project for the Analysis of Learning and Achievement in Mathematics." Results showed that students with low levels of cognitive ability were able to differentiate EVT components. Both groups demonstrated a similar downward developmental trend in motivation from early to middle adolescence, and similar relations between EVT components and levels of efforts, self-regulation, and mathematics class grades. Abstract (english):
Human beings are supposed to possess an approximate number system (ANS) dedicated to extracting and representing approximate numerical magnitude information as well as an object tracking system (OTS) for the rapid and accurate enumeration of small sets. It is assumed that the OTS and the ANS independently contribute to the acquisition of more elaborate numerical concepts. Chinese children have been shown to exhibit more elaborate numerical concepts than their non-Chinese peers, but it is still an open question whether similar cross-national differences exist with regard to the underlying systems, namely the ANS and the OTS. In the present study, we investigated this question by comparing Chinese and German preschool children with regard to their performance in a non-symbolic numerical magnitude comparison task (assessing the ANS) and in an enumeration task (assessing the OTS). In addition, we compared children's counting skills. To ensure that possible between-group differences could not be explained by differences in more general performance factors, we also assessed children's reasoning ability and processing speed. Chinese children showed a better counting performance and a more accurate performance in the non-symbolic numerical magnitude comparison task. These differences in performance could not be ascribed to differences in reasoning abilities and processing speed. In contrast, Chinese and German children did not differ signi cantly in the enumeration of small sets. The superior counting performance of Chinese children was thus found to be re ected in the ANS but not in the OTS. (DIPF/Orig.)
