Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Open science practitioners embrace the ideas of sharing and communicating their research and interests as well as collaborating with like-minded peers, i.e., practicing co-science (McKiernan et al. 2016) such as on the Open Science MOOC platform. If they admit to those goals regarding their research, it can be assumed that those researchers adapt their attitudes and practices towards learning and teaching, respectively. So, if researchers move towards open science practices, will they do so in their higher education teaching? Will education become more open? More generally, what would open science principles (Bezjak et al. 2018) in education look like, for educators and learners, respectively? (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This chapter describes perspectives for utilizing natural language processing (NLP) to analyze artifacts arising from mass collaboration on the web. In recent years, the amount of user-generated content on the web has grown drastically. This content is typically noisy and un- or at best semi-structured, so that traditional analysis tools cannot properly handle it. To discover linguistic structures in this data, manual analysis is not feasible due to the large quantities of data. In this chapter, we explain and analyze web-based resources of mass collaboration, namely, wikis, web forums, debate platforms, and blog comments. We introduce recent advances and ongoing efforts to analyze textual content in two of these resources with the help of NLP. This includes an approach to discover flows of knowledge in online mass collaboration as well as methods to mine argumentative structures in natural language text. Finally, we outline application scenarios of the previously discussed techniques and resources within the domain of education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This paper explores participative Social Information Behavior in the educational domain. The goal is to capture a picture of current information practices in the Social Web. The focus is on the "places" and the scale of the Social Web in the domain, the communication dynamics and structure of communities and the specificities, quality, pragmatics and success of communication processes. The paper describes the concept and current implementation status of an online analysis approach and system that tries to answer these questions. Furthermore, first empirical results are presented. Data indicates that participative Social Information Behavior is of relevance in the domain: The volume of openly accessible user-generated content is impressive. The basic characteristics of analyzed forums suggest that such websites resemble sustainable knowledge building communities. Pre-tests regarding the analysis of communication processes denote that generated content can often be seen as a valuable information resource.

Abstract:
Would you target your audience differently, knowing the real age and gender of the text authors on your website forum? This paper examines hundreds of thousands of online documents, e.g. chat lines or blog posts, showing that computers are capable to address this task better than humans, without relying on content stereotypes. Pointing out that age and gender profiling are not independent problems, we approach the task as a multiclass classification problem, combining the age and gender information to define six classes. Utilizing a wide range of stylistic and content features and a large number of readability measures we demonstrate the high predictive abilities of the parts of speech, the punctuation and the amount of emotions and slang used in the text, independently of the topic discussed.
