Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The encoding, consolidation, and retrieval of events and facts form the basis for acquiring new skills and knowledge. Prior knowledge can enhance those memory processes considerably and thus foster knowledge acquisition. But prior knowledge can also hinder knowledge acquisition, in particular when the to-be-learned information is inconsistent with the presuppositions of the learner. Therefore, taking students' prior knowledge into account and knowing about the way it affects memory processes is important for optimization of students' learning. Recent behavioral and neuroimaging experiments have shed new light on the neural mechanisms through which prior knowledge affects memory. However, relatively little is known about developmental differences in the ability to make efficient use of one's knowledge base for memory purposes. In this article, we review and integrate recent empirical evidence from developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience about the effects of prior knowledge on memory processes. In particular, this may entail an extended shift from processing in the medial temporal lobes of the brain toward processing in the neocortex. Such findings have implications for students as developing individuals. Therefore, we highlight recent insights from cognitive neuroscience that call for further investigation in educational settings, discussing to what extent these novel insights may inform teaching in the classroom. Abstract (english):
This longitudinal study investigated the bidirectional relationship between negative life events and self-esteem during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood (N = 2272). Drawing on theories of human development over the lifespan and just-world theory, we analyzed age-graded changes in self-esteem and their interplay with negative life events at three measurement points over a 12-year period. We addressed both the short-term and the longer term effects of single as well as multiple negative life events on changes in self-esteem (socialization effects). We further investigated whether the pre-event level of self-esteem affected the likelihood of negative life events occurring (selection effects) and, finally, whether it had protective effects in terms of helping people adjust to negative events. Latent change models yielded four main findings: (i) self-esteem increased during young adulthood; (ii) socialization effects were observed over shorter and longer timespans, but (iii) selection effects were only found for multiple negative life events, with low self-esteem predicting a high number of negative life events; (iv) high pre-event self-esteem acted as a protective factor, attenuating declines in self-esteem after experience of multiple negative life events. Abstract:
Objectives: Associations between social support and health are studied since decades. Yet, little is known about how they vary by state versus trait aspects of support and by adult age. At trait and state level, the current study investigates direct associations between social support and health and whether support buffers the daily negative affect (NA)-health association in 2 age groups. Method: Seventy-nine younger and 88 older adults (OA) participated in 20 daily assessments of NA, health complaints (HC), and available support. On trait and state levels, 3 support facets - emotional, informational, and instrumental - were distinguished; social integration was assessed on the trait level. Results: For OA, trait emotional support was associated with fewer HC. In both age groups, state informational support was related to more daily HC. Social integration buffered the daily NA-health association in younger adults (YA), whereas informational support amplified the same association in OA. Discussion: We propose that 2 different mechanisms are relevant for younger and OA and at state and trait level. Although emotional support may be a resource for OA, informational support may enhance their daily complaints. YA seem to benefit from being socially integrated. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The article reflects on a pilot teacher training programme in Tanzania, where videos are used for implementing new teaching methods, but also for initiating a discourse about corporal punishment. The culture of instruction in Tanzania is strictly based on a teacher-centred approach which leaves all activity to the teacher and turns students into passive listeners. In most cases, teachers deal with up to 80 students in one classroom. Therefore, discipline is an important matter of instruction and many teachers still use corporal punishment that is widely accepted in Tanzania. The launched training programme has the aim of implementing learner-centred teaching methods without using corporal punishment and offers Tanzanian teachers the possibility to participate in a workshop that connects these methods with subject-related topics. In the English teaching workshop, the facilitator used filmed English lessons from a German school to discuss with the participants both the application of learner-centred methods and the absence of corporal punishment. The use of these German videos shows advantages but also limitations that are strongly related to the European versus African setting. The article discusses these dimensions on the basis of data that are generated by ethnographical observation and audiotranscripts of the piloted workshop. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
For at least the past three decades, assessment, evaluation, and accountability have been major strands of educational policy and practice internationally. However, the available data on how exactly assessment- and evaluation-based policies are framed and implemented, or how they shape practices within schools, are still limited. This chapter addresses these issues with a broad focus that takes into account several perspectives on school evaluation and student assessment, together with everyday practices of teacher judgment and grading. First, we address assessment and evaluation practices for the purpose of educational system monitoring. Second, school evaluation practices, as well as the use of assessment and evaluation results at the school level, are discussed. A third perspective focuses on practices of teacher evaluation. Finally, practices of student assessment within schools and classrooms are examined. An international perspective is proferred that compares countries in regard to outcomes and procedures; an example of this latter is the way assessment is used and implemented. The instruments described and recommended in this chapter have implications for international research, as well as national studies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This chapter calls for a shift in the focus of international large-scale assessments (ILSAs) from the pure detection of immigrants' educational disadvantages towards a more comprehensive analysis of how and how well school systems address student diversity, considering not only the ethnicity of students but also its intersections with other dimensions of disadvantage. To this end, system-level assessment of public policies as well as of different forms of individual, institutional, and structural discrimination are proposed, as well as school-level assessment of multicultural school cultures and multicultural school climates. After summarizing the theoretical background for these themes, some thoughts on possible indicators implementable in ILSAs are developed, before specific measures, that were developed for and tested in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 field trial, are described. It is concluded that the further development and implementation of these and other measures for purposes of policy monitoring will not only help the development of a more comprehensive understanding of ethnic inequalities in the education sector, but will also increse our understanding of how these inequalities are produced and perpetuated.
