Abstract: The association between academic self-concept and achievement is assumed to be reciprocal. Typically, the association is analyzed by variants of the classical cross-lagged panel model. Results with more recently developed methodological approaches, for example, the random intercept cross-lagged panel model, its continuous-time implementation, and the latent change score model, are not available so far. The present study aimed to test the association between reading self-concept and reading achievement with different models to evaluate whether positive cross-lagged effects can be demonstrated with the alternative models. Drawing on a sample of 2,014 elementary students from Grade 1 to Grade 4, results of alternative models yielded noticeable differences. Support for reciprocal effects between reading self-concept and reading achievement was found using the classical and the full-forward cross-lagged panel models. No such effects were found in the other models. Thus, the reciprocal effect model can be called into question for elementary schoolchildren. The results are discussed with regard to the theoretical assumptions and appropriate methodological approaches. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Letter knowledge is considered an important cognitive foundation for learning to read. The underlying mechanisms of the association between letter knowledge and reading skills are, however, not fully understood. Acquiring letter knowledge depends on the ability to learn and retrieve sound-symbol pairings. In the current study, this process was explored by setting preschool children's (N = 242, mean age = 5.57 years) performance in the acquisition and retrieval of a paired associate learning (PAL) task in relation to their letter knowledge as well as to their performance in tasks assessing precursors of reading skills (i.e., phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, phonological short-term memory, backward recall, and response inhibition). Multiple regression analyses revealed that performance in the acquisition of the PAL task was significantly associated with phonological awareness and backward recall, whereas performance in the retrieval of the PAL task was significantly associated with rapid automatized nam- ing, phonological awareness, and backward recall. Moreover, PAL proved to be mediating the relation between reading precursors and letter knowledge. Together, these findings indicate that the acquisition of letter knowledge may depend on a visual-verbal associative learning mechanism and that different factors contribute to the acquisition and retrieval of such visual-verbal associations. Abstract (english): Previous studies indicate that the effectiveness of reading and spelling predictors in transparent orthographies is affected by the onset of literacy training at school entry. In this longitudinal study with 65 German speaking children, the effects of literacy predictors on reading and spelling abilities were compared before and after school entry. Phonological awareness, letter sound knowledge, and rapid naming were assessed before and after school entry. In addition, reading and spelling abilities were assessed at the end of first grade. Path model analyses showed that letter sound knowledge before school entry predicted reading and spelling at the end of first grade, while rapid naming after school entry predicted reading but not spelling abilities. This study shows that the onset of schooling influences the predictability of early literacy predictors and indicates that with the onset of formal literacy education, predictors representing automaticity in serial processing increase in sig- nificance for reading abilities.

Abstract (english): Thematic relations are important semantic features in the young child's lexicon. So far, it is unclear how the ability to distinguish different strengths of thematic relations develops, whether this ability depends on specific word characteristics (homonyms), and whether it is linked to reading acquisition. In this longitudinal study, 62 children were asked to judge which of two words (i.e., thunder, fire) matched a presented context sentence (i.e., Miriam sees the lightning.) in a thematic judgment task. The strength of the thematic relation of the distractors to the target sentence (associated, unrelated) and types of context words (homonyms, non-homonyms) were varied. Children's performance was more accurate and developed faster in the unrelated than in the association condition. Furthermore, children were more accurate in homonym compared to non-homonym responses. Moreover, children's thematic judgment abilities predicted their later reading skill over other important precursor abilities of reading, including listening comprehension. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The proposed project focuses on the comprehension of multiple documents in university students. Although strategies and skills are required to achieve a comprehensive understanding of multiple documents for studying successfully, many students struggle with important parts of this process. The proposed project seeks to investigate how interindividual differences in the representation of a task will affect students' comprehension, and examines the effectiveness of a short-term intervention on the students' performance and behavior when dealing with multiple documents. Abstract (english): Background: Researchers often report and discuss gender differences. However, recent research has drawn attention to interaction effects between gender and other social categories. Aims: This study analysed the development of disparities in students' reading‐related self‐concept, intrinsic motivation, and behaviour, as they relate to differences in gender and socio‐economic family background. Drawing on expectancy‐value theory, we regarded reading‐related self‐concept, motivation, and behaviour as key to explaining the growing differences between boys and girls in adolescence. Specifically, we focused on the interaction between gender and socio‐economic background in children, which has been discussed in the context of moderating gender differences but not in the context of reading‐related attitudes and behaviour. Sample: The investigation is based on a longitudinal sample of N = 717 German students between third and sixth grades. Method: We used questionnaire data from both students and parents. To compare students' development across time, we applied multigroup latent growth curve models. Results: We found evidence of increasing gender differences, which were also moderated by the socio‐economic status (SES) of parents: a gender gap either already existed (intrinsic motivation and reading behaviour) or intensified (reading self‐concept and reading behaviour) between third and sixth grades. The interaction of gender and SES seemed particularly important for reading self‐concept, with the gender gap growing less substantially for higher‐SES children. Moreover, this pattern persisted for reading self‐concept, even when controlling for achievement differences. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that gender, social background, and the interaction of the two are relevant for development in the domain of reading, even in young children. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): It is widely known that boys, on average, have lower reading competencies than girls. With respect to the development of reading competencies, research has yet to determine whether performance differences between genders increase, decrease, or remain stable over the course of secondary school. Some studies, mainly from the United Kingdom and the United States, suggest that an increase in performance differences between boys and girls is related to the development of students from families with low socioeconomic status. Moreover, students' immigration background and the school track have been discussed as a moderator. In the present study, the aforementioned research questions were addressed with data from 2,505 students from Germany. Using data collected at four time points (Grades 5 - 8), we applied latent growth curve modeling to analyze the competence areas reading speed and reading comprehension. The results showed a fan-spread effect that illustrated a disadvantage for boys in reading speed and comprehension. No fan-spread effects of reading performance growth occurred in relation to socioeconomic status or immigration background. Furthermore, the analyses showed that the gender-related fan-spread effects were not moderated by socioeconomic status or immigration background. The school track was not a significant moderator of the gender effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The authors examined the extent to which classroom-specific relationships between students' gender and their reading achievement and enjoyment of reading are associated with student-perceived teaching quality. Based on a sample of 10,543 ninth-grade students from 427 classrooms, multilevel analyses revealed that effective classroom management, adequate pacing, and a strong focus on language competencies were related to a less pronounced increase of girls' advantage in reading achievement during Grade 9. High levels of teacher support and focus on language competencies were related to smaller gender differences in enjoyment of reading at the beginning of Grade 9, though not associated with change of these differences over the school year. Our findings suggest that high teaching quality is not only related to higher reading achievement and reading enjoyment in classrooms as a whole, but may also help to mitigate the increase of gender gaps in reading achievement and motivation commonly observed in secondary school.
