Abstract (english): Purpose : The transition to school and the first years of elementary school education are very sensitive phases for reading development. Reading researchers have established key precursors and developmental steps in these phases. However, how these components interact and affect growth is not well understood yet. The current study from Germany replicates established findings and explores how curvilinear effects can add information to our understanding of reading development. Method : 525 German-speaking children were followed during a 5-year period from kindergarten to fourth Grade. Phonological awareness (PA), letter knowledge (LK), rapid naming (RAN) and language skills (LS) were assessed in kindergarten, decoding and reading comprehension in elementary school. Analysis was based on latent growth models with curvilinear (quadratic) effects. Results : The results indicate that PA and LK are of importance for early reading, RAN was additionally revealed to be of importance for further growth in decoding. Language skills and decoding, together with their interaction, explain variation in reading comprehension skills. A curvilinear effect was found for decoding on reading comprehension growth only. Conclusion : Our study shows which precursors predict growth in reading development in a transparent orthography and expands our understanding of how language and decoding affect the development of reading comprehension. Abstract (english): The reading acceleration phenomenon refers to the effect that experimentally induced time constraints can generate instantaneous improvements of reading rate, accuracy and comprehension among typical and reading impaired readers of different age groups. An overview of studies applying the fading manipulation (i.e., letters are erased in reading direction), which induces the time constraints causing the acceleration phenomenon, is provided in the first part of this review. The second part summarises the outcomes of studies using a training approach called the reading acceleration program (RAP) that integrated core principles of the acceleration phenomenon to generate persistent reading performance improvements. Our review shows ample evidence for the validity of the acceleration phenomenon, since it has been replicated across various languages and populations. However, although there are several explanatory approaches for underlying mechanisms, none of them is well substantiated by empirical evidence so far. Similarly, although generally positive effects of RAP training were reported for several languages and groups of readers, the exact mechanisms causing improved reading rates and comprehension are not well understood. Our critical discussion points out several limitations of RAP that call for further research. However, we also highlight several benefits regarding RAP's potential as an intervention approach for enhancements in reading performance. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Early intervention for children with reading impairments is crucial in order to achieve reading improvements and avoid school failure. One line of reading intervention research focuses on the experimental manipulation of reading rate through a text-fading training approach. Considering relevant reading-related predictors (i.e., orthographic knowledge and rapid automatized naming; RAN), we aim at evaluating the text-fading training's efficiency for a sample of German reading-impaired third graders (n = 120). The purpose of the present study was to examine (1) the predictive value of orthographic knowledge and RAN and their contribution of explained variance in comprehension performance during training, (2) text-fading training effects on reading rate and comprehension in a pre-post comparison, and (3) (lasting) text-fading training effects at word and sentence level in a pre-post-follow-up design. Results of structural models indicated RAN to be significantly related to comprehension performance for the experimental group, whereas no sufficient regression weight was found for orthographic knowledge. A reverse pattern was found for the self-paced group. No significant improvements regarding reading rate and comprehension were revealed for the experimental group after training. However, significant positive effects on word and sentence level at post-test time point indicate stronger reading improvements for the experimental compared to the control group. The retention of training gains was indicated at sentence-level reading 6 months after the training. Possible explanations for the presented positive training effects as well as the mixed results for reading rate, comprehension, and follow-up preservation are discussed.

Abstract (english): It is widely accepted that general intelligence and phonological awareness contribute to children's acquisition of reading and spelling skills. A further candidate in this regard is orthographic knowledge (i.e., the knowledge about permissible letter patterns). It consists of two components, word-specific (i.e., the knowledge of the spelling of specific words) and general orthographic knowledge (i.e., the knowledge about legal letter patterns of a writing system). Among German students, previous studies have shown that word-specific orthographic knowledge contributes to both reading and spelling. The results regarding general orthographic knowledge and its contribution to reading and spelling are inconsistent. The major goal of the present study was to determine the incremental predictive value of orthographic knowledge for reading and spelling skills among German elementary-school children (N= 66), over and above the contribution of general intelligence and phonological awareness. The second goal was to examine whether there is a difference between the two subtypes of orthographic knowledge in the amount of their respective contribution to reading and spelling performance. The results show that word-specific as well as general orthographic knowledge con- tribute to both reading and spelling performance, over and above intelligence and phonological awareness. Furthermore, it reveals that both word-specific and general orthographic knowledge explain more variance of spelling compared to reading. Possible explanations for these results, limitations, and implications of the study are being discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Previous studies mostly examined the role of orthographic knowledge in basic reading processing (i.e., word-reading), however, regarding higher reading processing (i.e., sentence- and text-comprehension), mixed results were reported. In addition, previous research in transparent languages, such as German, focused mostly on typically skilled readers. The aim of this study was to examine the role of orthographic knowledge in basic reading processing (word-reading) as well as in higher reading processing (sentence- and text-comprehension), in addition to phonological awareness and naming speed in a sample of German elementary school poor readers. For this purpose, data from 103 German third-graders with poor reading proficiency were analyzed via multiple linear regression analysis. Analyses revealed that orthographic knowledge contributes to reading at word- and sentence-level, but not at text-level in German third-graders with poor reading proficiency, over and above phonological awareness and naming speed. These findings support that orthographic knowledge should be considered as a relevant reading related predictor. Therefore, it would be reasonable to include the assessment of orthographic knowledge skills in diagnostic procedures to identify children at risk to develop reading difficulties, besides phonological awareness and naming speed.

Abstract: In dieser narrativen Übersichtsarbeit werden die zentralen Faktoren des Leseerwerbs beschrieben und empirische Forschungsergebnisse aus aktuellen Meta-Analysen, Reviews und Längsschnittstudien zusammengetragen. Dabei wird zunächst die frühe Leseentwicklung mit Bezug zum Phasenmodell von Frith (1985, 1986) fokussiert und der Leseprozess anhand des Dual-Route Modells von Coltheart (1978) erläutert. Des Weiteren wird auf die problematische Leseentwicklung eingegangen und Risikofaktoren auf genetischer sowie neurokognitiver Ebene beschrieben. Weiterhin werden Ergebnisse zu Risikofaktoren bezüglich der kognitiven Verarbeitung, der Sprachentwicklung sowie prä- und postnatale Umwelteinflüsse präsentiert. Abschließend werden kritische Anmerkungen und weiterführende Ausblicke diskutiert. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): This narrative review addresses the complex operation of reading acquisition. Focusing on empirical research and meta-analytic insights, early reading development is depicted. Furthermore, the reading process is illustrated referring to the dual-route model and difficulties in reading acquisition are described and explained. Empirical data concerning reading relevant genetic and neurocognitive risk factors are presented. Risk factors regarding individual cognitive processing as well as developmental language disorders and pre- and postnatal complications are outlined. Shortcomings and perspectives are discussed. Abstract: Der Leseerwerb ist ein hoch komplexer Prozess, der durch eine Vielzahl von Faktoren beeinflusst werden kann. Be- stimmte kognitive (internale) Fertigkeiten und Funktionen konnten bereits als individuelle Voraussetzungen zur effektiven (schrift)sprach- lichen Informationsverarbeitung identifiziert werden. In dieser narrativen Überblicksarbeit wird der Einfluss von weiteren (externalen) Ein- flussfaktoren anhand von Informationen aus Übersichtsarbeiten und Meta-Analysen dargestellt. Dabei werden ausgewählte Faktoren (z. B. sozioökonomischer Status, häusliche Lernumgebung, Schule, urbaner Lärm) hervorgehoben. Weiterhin werden erfolgversprechende Absätze zur Prävention und Intervention skizziert. Es werden Präventionsprogramme beschrieben, die sich auf die individuelle Förderung von train- ierbaren kognitiven Voraussetzungen fokussieren. Ebenfalls werden störungsspezifische und allgemeinwirksame Interventionsprogramme dargestellt, die für eine langfristige Leseförderung eingesetzt werden können. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): The highly complex process of reading relies on a variety of factors that influence reading development. Initially, reading acquisition requires the understanding of the relationship between letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes). If grapheme-phoneme correspondences are successfully established, the process of reading can be accelerated and automatized. The manifestation of phonological awareness is thereby considered to be the central cognitive component for successful reading acquisition and the best predictor of later reading performance. Furthermore, other cognitive skills, such as processing speed, phonological working memory, visual and auditory processing, as well as orthographic knowledge are assumed to also substantially affect reading development. Besides these (internal) cognitive preconditions, other (external) factors are additionally influential for the successful - or problematic - acquisition of reading expertise. The goal of this narrative summary is to give an overview of relevant meta-analytic results and insights from recent reviews considering the identification of significant family- and environment-based variables as well as information about effective German prevention and intervention approaches on the individual level. Relating to the influence of family conditions, the socioeconomic status and the home learning environment are outlined to be of specific relevance. More precisely, low socioeconomic status and an uninspiring learning environment have been associated with poor reading achievement. Further influential environment-based factors are related to the school setting and noise exposure. For example, the quality of instruction, the teacher's competency, as well as the pupil-teacher interaction are closely related to learning and reading success. Further, chronic exposure to urban noise reportedly results in lower reading performance for children, as their cognitive skills are generally still in the process of automatization and more prone to disturbances. To prevent school and reading failure, meta-analytic results suggest early fostering of (internal) cognitive skills, especially if the external preconditions are detrimental. A number of prevention programs have therefore focused on improving the central reading-related cognitive components (i. e., phonological awareness). Furthermore, reviews recommend engaging in intervention programs, which focus on symptom- related problems (e. g., reading training at phoneme or syllable level) to reduce any existing reading deficiencies. Fostering general reading competence (e. g., grapheme-phoneme correspondences) is emphasized to support children at risk as well as normal achievers. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Als individuelle Voraussetzungen erfolgreichen Lernens lassen sich kognitive, motivationale und volitionale Kompetenzen identifizieren. Bei den kognitiven Kompetenzen spielen vor allem die selektive Aufmerksamkeit, die Funktionstüchtigkeit des Arbeitsgedächtnisses, der Einsatz von Lernstrategien und dessen metakognitive Regulation sowie das bestehende Vorwissen eine zentrale Rolle. Als motivationale Kompetenzen zeichnen sich die Lern- und Leistungsmotivation, einhergehende Ursachenzuschreibungen (Attributionsstil) für Erfolg und Misserfolg sowie das subjektive Fähigkeitsselbstkonzept aus. Volitionale Kompetenzen beziehen sich auf die gewollte Initiierung und Ausführung von geeigneten Handlungen für die Zielerreichung. Um den Verlauf und die Entwicklung der lernrelevanten Grundvoraussetzungen messen zu können, bieten sich verschiedene Diagnostikinstrumente an. Das Kompetenz- und Leistungsniveau schulischer Fertigkeiten kann über Verfahren der Leistungsdiagnostik (z.B. über ELFE, die DERET- und DEMAT-Testreihen) oder den Einsatz von Verfahren der Verlaufsdiagnostik (z.B. über LSL, VSL oder LVD-M 2-4) ermittelt werden. Auch unabhängig von den schulischen Leistungen können zentrale individuelle Voraussetzungen erfolgreichen Lernens individuell festgestellt werden. So kann etwa die differenzielle Funktionstüchtigkeit des Arbeitsgedächtnisses diagnostiziert werden (z.B. über die AGTB 5-12). Auch können Informationen zu motivationalen Ausprägungen systematisch erfasst und für die Erstellung von Förderplänen bzw. bei der Diagnostik von Lern- und Leistungsproblemen unterstützend eingesetzt werden (z.B. über die Diagnostikinstrumente SELLMO, FLM oder SESSKO). Abstract: Die Kulturtechnik des Lesens gilt als Voraussetzung für den Zugang zum selbstständigen Lernen und als wichtiger Bestandteil des Bildungserfolgs. Die Leseentwicklung ist ein hochkomplexer Prozess, dessen Aneignung den meisten Kindern relativ gut gelingt. Ein problematischer Verlauf der Leseentwicklung kann jedoch zu massiven Leseschwierigkeiten führen. Vielen Kindern mit Leseproblemen gelingt es nicht, ein Maß an Leseflüssigkeit zu erreichen, das ihnen Zugang zur Bedeutung des Gelesenen ermöglicht. Daher steht die Förderung der Leseflüssigkeit im Fokus von verschiedenen Leseförderprogrammen. Im Folgenden soll die Entstehung und Entwicklung eines spezifischen Förderansatzes beschrieben werden, der sich auf die computerbasierte individuelle Förderung der Leseflüssigkeit beim leisen Lesen bezieht. Dabei sollen Kinder darin unterstützt werden, ihre Lesegeschwindigkeit zu steigern und ihr Leseverständnis zu verbessern. Um eine Steigerung der Lesegeschwindigkeit zu erreichen, werden Kinder bei diesem Förderansatz dazu gebracht, schneller zu lesen, als sie es normalerweise tun würden. Dabei wird eine Manipulation eingesetzt, durch die Text in der individuellen Lesegeschwindigkeit vom Bildschirm ausgeblendet wird und somit die Lesezeit begrenzt.
