Abstract (english):
To assess children's individual stages of mathematical development, as well as their developmental trajectories, different diagnostic approaches have been developed. Based on the test results of such approaches, children with mathematics learning dif culties are identi ed and programs to enhance mathematical learning can be developed and evaluated. In this chapter, quality characteristics of assessment are described (reliability, objectivity, validity, and provision of norms). Different categories are presented to classify approaches to assessing mathematical competence and performance (norm-referenced versus not-norm-referenced tests, individual versus group testing, paper-and- pencil tests versus interviews versus computer-based tests, chronological versus educational age-oriented tests, speed versus power tests, and principles of task selection). Drawing on selected approaches, different principles of task selection are discussed (curriculum-based, based on neuropsychology theories, or based on developmental psychology theories) together with their consequences for the interpretation of respective test results. Finally, some promising research trends are outlined. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Klasse (Probejahr) in Berlin. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
This study focuses on students who change from the academic to the non-academic school track after grade 7 (probationary year) in Berlin. We examined which individual student characteristics (e. g., performance, school biography, family background) predict school change after the probationary year. We were particularly interested as to whether there are secondary effects of social background, after controlling for differences in performance. Our analyses were based on data from a study which included a whole cohort of school track changers (N = 754) who were compared with students that remained at the academic track (N = 1470). In order to predict the change of school type, multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results revealed significant differences between both groups regarding all observed characteristics. Performance-related characteristics were the best predictors of track change. After controlling for these characteristics, no further significant effects for other predictors were observable (i. e., no secondary effects of social background were present). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The IRT models most commonly employed to estimate within-item multidimensionality are compensatory and suggest that some dimensions (e.g., traits or abilities) can make up for a lack in others. However, many assessment frameworks in educational large-scale assessments suggest partially compensatory relations among dimensions. In two Monte-Carlo simulation studies we varied the loading pattern, the latent correlation between dimensions and the ability distribution to evaluate the impact on test scores when a compensatory model is incorrectly applied onto partially compensatory data. Findings imply only negligible effects when true abilities are bivariate normal. Assuming a uniform distribution, however, analyses of differences in test scores demonstrated systematic effects for specific patterns of true ability: High abilities are largely underestimated when the other ability required to solve some of the items was low. These findings highlight the necessity of applying the partially compensatory model under data conditions likely to occur in educational large-scale assessments. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Multimodality in learning analytics and learning science is under the spotlight. The landscape of sensors and wearable trackers that can be used for learning support is evolving rapidly, as well as data collection and analysis methods. Multimodal data can now be collected and processed in real time at an unprecedented scale. With sensors, it is possible to capture observable events of the learning process such as learner's behaviour and the learning context. The learning process, however, consists also of latent attributes, such as the learner's cognitions or emotions. These attributes are unobservable to sensors and need to be elicited by human‐driven interpretations. We conducted a literature survey of experiments using multimodal data to frame the young research field of multimodal learning analytics. The survey explored the multimodal data used in related studies (the input space) and the learning theories selected (the hypothesis space). The survey led to the formulation of the Multimodal Learning Analytics Model whose main objectives are of (O1) mapping the use of multimodal data to enhance the feedback in a learning context; (O2) showing how to combine machine learning with multimodal data; and (O3) aligning the terminology used in the field of machine learning and learning science. Abstract (english):
The authors examined the extent to which classroom-specific relationships between students' gender and their reading achievement and enjoyment of reading are associated with student-perceived teaching quality. Based on a sample of 10,543 ninth-grade students from 427 classrooms, multilevel analyses revealed that effective classroom management, adequate pacing, and a strong focus on language competencies were related to a less pronounced increase of girls' advantage in reading achievement during Grade 9. High levels of teacher support and focus on language competencies were related to smaller gender differences in enjoyment of reading at the beginning of Grade 9, though not associated with change of these differences over the school year. Our findings suggest that high teaching quality is not only related to higher reading achievement and reading enjoyment in classrooms as a whole, but may also help to mitigate the increase of gender gaps in reading achievement and motivation commonly observed in secondary school. Abstract (english):
Based on the finding that children with mathematical learning difficulties (MLD) have deficits in working memory (WM), the question arises as to whether these children differ from typical learners only in the level or also in the developmental trajectories of WM functioning. To this end, the WM of 80 children with MLD and 71 typical learners was assessed longitudinally from third to fifth grade. Typical learners outperformed children with MLD in the phonological, visuospatial and central executive WM functioning in third grade. Latent change analyses indicated that both phonological and central executive WM functioning developed in a parallel pattern in children with MLD and in typical learners. In contrast, visuospatial WM functioning revealed a different development in children with and without MLD since the gap between both groups decreased over time. Overall, despite starting at a lower level, the WM functioning in children with MLD did not develop more slowly. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The purpose of this study is to examine whether teacher enthusiasm and classroom management self-efficacy are related to classroom mastery orientation and student motivation. We used data from 803 students in grades 9 and 10 (53.3% girls) and their mathematics teachers (N = 41; 58.5% men). Student-perceived teacher enthusiasm was related to classroom mastery orientation as well as to intrinsic value and cost at the student level. Teacher-reported selfefficacy was related to classroom mastery orientation at the classroom level. At both the individual and the classroom level, classroom mastery orientation was related to attainment and utility value. (DIPF/Orig.)
