Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract (english):
Performance in Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) tasks with different materials (dice, digits, letters, objects) and key precursor skills of reading and arithmetic were assessed in kindergarten children (n = 541) in their last year before entering elementary school. Based on their precursor skills, three groups of children were identified, i.e. children at risk for reading problems (n = 31), children at risk for arithmetic problems (n = 39), and children at risk for problems in both domains (n = 34). These at-risk children were compared to a control group (n = 343) regarding their performance in the different RAN tasks. Results revealed domain-specific deficits in both groups of children with a single risk: While children at risk for problems in reading exhibited deficits in the RAN of letters and objects, children at risk for problems in arithmetic showed deficits in the RAN of dice and digits. The group of children at risk for problems in both domains displayed additive, domain-general deficits. Findings are discussed in the context of behavioral and neurocognitive research on reading and mathematical disabilities.

Abstract (english):
Objective: To study normative data and psychometric properties of the Thai Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ; parent-, teacher-, and self-rated forms), which addresses positive and negative aspects of children's and adolescents' behaviour and generates clinically relevant scale scores. Materials and Methods: Using multistage random cluster sampling method, data were collected in 13 provinces from parents, teachers, and as self-reports of 9,491 children aged between 5 and 16 years. Evaluation methods included scale reliability analyses (Cronbach s alpha), correlations with age and among scales, testing for gender effects, and comparing urban and rural regions. A factor analysis examines the specific scale structure of the Thai parent-rated SDQ. Bandings are recommended to identify normal, borderline, and abnormal score ranges. Results: Problem scores were higher than those observed in Western countries, stressing the necessity to establish national norms. Thai SDQ norms identify probable behaviour problems if the total difficulties score is 19-40 in the parent-rated form,17-40 in the teacher form, and/or 19-40 in the self-report. Internal reliabilities were satisfactory for all but one subscale. Age and gender effects on SDQ scores as well as correlations between subscales were well in line with the English original and its many other translated versions. Conclusion: The Thai SDQ was shown to possess sufficiently favourable psychometric properties. Thus, this instrument promises to be a useful assessment and screening tool, as in other parts of the world. Ongoing validation studies and cross-cultural comparisons will provide further culture-specific findings.

Abstract (english):
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with/without dyslexia was investigated using a double dissociation design. Neuropsychological performance representing the core deficits of the two disorders was measured in order totest the common deficit hypothesis. Phonological short-term memory, morpho-syntactical language, and central executive processing (manipulating and switching) tasks were administered to four groups of 10-14 year old children (ADHD-only n = 20, dyslexia-only n = 20, ADHD+ dyslexia n = 20, and controls n = 19). Comparisons of performance on these tasks were carried out using 2 (ADHD yes/no) × 2 (dyslexia yes/no) factorial analyses of variance and covariance. Significant main effects were found for dyslexia (language processing functions) and for ADHD (EF switching). In the case of the EF manipulating a main effect for both dyslexia and ADHD was revealed. Effect sizes of mean performance indicated that all three impaired groups shared a common deficit in working memory which could reflect a cognitive overlap partly explaining the high rate of co-occurring dyslexia and ADHD. Abstract:
Objectives: This study examines whether the German translation of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a reliable and valid screening instrument and whether it is as effective a tool for clinical diagnostics and scientific applications as the CBCL/TRF. Methods: We examined 543 children and adolescents (147 girls and 396 boys) with ages ranging from 5 to 17 years and correlated the results of the parent and teacher SDQ as well as the CBCL/TRF with clinical diagnoses. Furthermore, the adequacy of the scale structure of the SDQ was tested using confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses. Results: It was demonstrated that the scales of the parent and teacher versions were sufficiently homogeneous (0.72-0.83). Correlations between SDQ scales and corresponding CBCL/TRF scales showed a high degree of congruence, while an exact replication of the original SDQ scale structure could also be achieved. Parent and teacher versions of both questionnaires presented with good validity, not only with regard to the discrimination between child psychiatric patients and a representative community sample, but also in the identification of different categories of disorders within the clinical sample. Conclusion: The parent and teacher SDQs proved to be valid and helpful questionnaires for use in the framework of a multi-dimensional behavioural assessment, and appear to be well suited for screening purposes, longitudinal monitoring of therapeutic effects, and scientific research purposes.
