Abstract:
Normal aging impairs the representation and integration (binding) of spatial and temporal context in episodic memory. We directly compare age differences in episodic memory in relation to processing spatial and temporal context. As part of the COGITO study, 101 younger and 103 older participants trained an object-location serial recall task for 100 sessions. Training exacerbated the recall deficit of older relative to younger adults. Younger adults improved in recall performance on both spatial and temporal dimensions. In contrast, older adults improved on the spatial dimension only. Individual differences in pretest performance and change were positively correlated across dimensions among younger adults but negatively related among older adults. We conclude that older adults are impaired at simultaneously processing spatial and temporal context and preferentially process spatial at the expense of temporal context.

Abstract:
People often attribute poor performance to having bad days. Given that cognitive aging leads to lower average levels of performance and more moment-to-moment variability, one might expect that older adults should show greater day-to-day variability and be more likely to experience bad days than younger adults. However, both researchers and ordinary people typically sample only one performance per day for a given activity. Hence, the empirical basis for concluding that cognitive performance does substantially vary from day to day is inadequate. On the basis of data from 101 younger and 103 older adults who completed nine cognitive tasks in 100 daily sessions, we show that the contributions of systematic day-to-day variability to overall observed variability are reliable but small. Thus, the impression of good versus bad days is largely due to performance fluctuations at faster timescales. Despite having lower average levels of performance, older adults showed more consistent levels of performance across days.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract (english):
This research examines the effect of time of tesing on adult age differences in resistance to interference, working memory, processing speed, and vocabulary. Results show that time of testing modulates age-related differences only in the ability to resist automatic and prepotent responses. Older adults tested in the afternoon were more susceptible to interference than young adults tested at the same time of the day, and than their peers tested in the morning. In contrast, age-related differences in working memory, processing speed, and vocabulary were not modulated by time of the day. Our findings suggest that age-related modulation of performance as a function of the time of the day is specific to resistance to interference. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Focus-switching has recently been identified as an executive control process with differential age sensitivity. To date, the assumption of dissociable age effects is based on only two kinds of tasks constricting its conclusiveness. In a study with 85 younger (19 35 years) and 91 older adults (59 80 years), age effects were again dissociable in two alternative tasks with respect to the availability and the accessibility of representations. The results validate earlier findings that focus-switching is primarily affected in maintaining representations rather than in accessing them.

Abstract (english):
The present study used the German Aging Semantic Differential (ASD) to assess attitudes toward younger and older adults in a heterogeneous sample of n = 151 younger and n = 143 older adults. The questionnaire was administered in two versions, one referring to the evaluation of younger adults, the other to the evaluation of older adults. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis replicated the four-factor solution reported in the literature. Younger compared to older adults were rated as higher in terms of instrumentality (i.e., more active, adaptive to change) and integrity (i.e., more personally satisfied, at peace with oneself), whereas older adults were described as more autonomous and self-sufficient than younger adults. Younger participants reported more negative attitudes toward younger and older adults in some of the factors than did older participants. Structural equation modeling furthermore showed that attitudes correlated with personality characteristics and positive and negative affect, in that more agreeable, extraverted, and positively tempered participants reported less negative attitudes toward younger and older adults. Results are discussed in the context of multidimensional assessment of age stereotypes. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
[The authors] examined whether positive transfer of cognitive training, which so far has been observed for individual tests only, also generalizes to cognitive abilities, thereby carrying greater promise for improving everyday intellectualcompetence in adulthood and old age. In the COGITO Study, 101 younger and 103 older adults practiced six tests of perceptual speed (PS), three tests of working memory (WM), and three tests of episodic memory (EM) for over 100 daily 1-h sessions. Transfer assessment included multiple tests of PS, WM, EM, and reasoning. In both age groups, reliable positive transfer was found not only for individual tests but also for cognitive abilities, represented as latent factors. Furthermore, the pattern of correlations between latent change factors of practiced and latent change factors of transfer tasks indicates systematic relations at the level of broad abilities, making the interpretation of effects as resulting from unspecific increases in motivation or self-concept less likely. Abstract:
