Abstract (english): Skilled reading relies on the ability to access word representations, conceptualized as connections established between a word's orthography, phonology and meaning in memory. This study set out to explore the process of acquisition of these representations. The central hypothesis was that dyslexic readers would present difficulties in forming and maintaining word representations in memory, presumably due to instability in processes of decoding. Their performance was compared to the performance of age-matched and reading-level-matched typical readers (n = 20 per group). The hypothesis was tested by repeatedly exposing the readers to the same target words embedded in word-lists and meaningful texts. The targets were words which the dyslexic participants had difficulty to read in a pre-test, while being part of their spoken vocabulary. The output of each encounter with a target word was analyzed. The results indicate reduced accuracy rates of dyslexic readers compared to typical readers, despite the repeated exposures to the same targets. In addition, dyslexic readers showed larger variability in types of output and higher rates of inconsistency in producing the same output across encounters with the same target. The results therefore uphold the hypothesis of a deficiency of dyslexic readers in forming and retaining word representations in reading, and point to instability in processes of decoding orthography to phonology. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Three groups of reading-disabled children were found in studies of English,
German, and French: a group with a double deficit in reading and spelling, a group with a single spelling deficit, and a more rarely reported group presenting a single reading deficit. This study set out to examine whether these groups can be found in adults, readers and spellers of Hebrew, which differs from the previously studied orthographies in many aspects. To this end, Hebrew-speaking adults with or without reading disability were administered various literacy and literacy-related tests. Results
confirm the existence of the same three groups. While all shared a phonological deficit, subtle differences in phonological decoding ability and in speed of processing distinguished between the groups. The study therefore suggests that the previously reported associations and dissociations between reading and spelling are not restricted to English, German, or French and may not be only developmental in nature. Abstract: This study investigated the relations of early working-memory abilities (phonological and visual-spatial short-term memory [ STM] and complex memory and episodic buffer memory) and later developing reading skills. Sixty Hebrew-speaking children were followed from kindergarten through Grade 5. Working memory was tested in kindergarten and reading in Grades 1, 2, and 5. All memory measures, but phonological STM, correlated with reading up to Grade 5. Regression analyses (with intelligence quotient controlled) demonstrated that phonological complex memory predicted all reading skills in Grade 1, and accuracy in Grade 2. The rather understudied visual-spatial memory predicted comprehension in Grades 2 ( STM) and 5 (complex memory). The results point to an important role of the phonological complex memory in early assessment, and suggest a long-lasting role of early visual-spatial memory in predicting variance in reading. Whether this role of the visual-spatial memory is unique to the Hebrew orthography because of its visual features requires, however, further investigation. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): We examined in this study the hypothesis that cognitive resources are more closely linked with out-of-home behavior than motivational resources. A cognitively heterogeneous sample of 222 older adults aged 59-91 years (M = 72.7; SD = 6.2), including 146 cognitively healthy persons and 76 persons with mild cognitive impairment - recruited in the German and Israeli arm of the SenTra project - was used for the analysis. Out-of-home behavior was assessed by means of global positioning system technology (time out of home; number of nodes visited) as well as by questionnaire (out-of-home activities). Mini-Mental State Examination and trail-making tests A and B were used to assess cognitive resources. Well-being, depression, and environmental mastery were assessed as motivational resources. Findings at the zero-order and latent variable levels confirmed that cognitive resources were more closely linked with out-of-home behavior than motivational resources. Findings support the view that well-being-related motivations to exert out-of-home behavior may become less important in old age because of the increasing cognitive resources required by such behavior.

Abstract (english): In a time where the consequences of expanding globalization and social change affect many countries, there should be a renewed interest in processes of political socialization, participation, and identity formation of men and women as global citizens. Due to recent reports of increasing ethnocentrism, xenophobia, political apathy and political distrust in adolescents and young adults in Europe and many other countries around the world, the need to re-examine cognitive, affective, normative and behavioral aspects of political identity formation has become apparent. For more than four decades, research on political socialization and political culture in the Western Industrial World has established that males and females differ in their pathways towards political understanding and in their forms of political engagement. However, most of the studies on political socialization continue to either ignore or merelyreport gender differences in political orientations that were found in their data. Little effort was made by the social sciences to explain these gender differences. Moreover, gender differences vary by country or nation state, which is due to cultural, societal, political, religious or ethnic differences. The major aim of the following special issue on genderspecific political socialization in an international perspective is to elucidate gender variations in political attitudes and political behavior. In an international perspective, five contributions from the US, Australia, Chile and Israel present new findings and insights by asking what it means growing up as a male or female adolescent citizen in the 21st century.

(DIPF/Autor)

Abstract (english): The International TVET Handbook, which has been in existence since 1995, has become a practice-oriented standard work of literature for comparative TVET research within the German-speaking world. Besides practice- oriented target groups (mediating organisations in international TVET cooperation, international organisations, general education and TVET administrative offices, companies), this handbook also is a standard work for the Scientific Community (internationally operating TVET researchers, university chairs for comparative educational sciences and vocational and economic education, research institutes). The handbook starts with an international comparison part. The focus is on the country-related studies that concentrate on national TVET and general education systems on the basis of a uniform classification. They allow an introductory insight into the overall socio-economic conditions and the political competences regarding education and training. The education system is presented with the main emphasis on technical and vocational education and training. The structural and historical development lines are drawn and a context is established between the technical and vocational initial and continuing education and training (formal, non- formal, informal) and the corresponding general education system. Moreover, the personnel acting within the process of TVET is described and the supranational mobility referring to the international TVET cooperation is dealt with. Previous publications (as of December 2006) include: Introduction, comparative studies (structural comparison, theories and methodologies, European Union, International Standard Classification for Education = ISCED) and 43 country-related studies: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil (including update), Bulgaria, Chile, China (PR) (including update), Denmark (including update), Estonia, Finland, France, Greece (including update), Great Britain/England and Wales (including update), Great Britain/Scotland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Canada (including update), Republic of Korea, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation (including update), Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia (including update), Spain, Czech Republic, Tunisia, Ukraine, Hungary, Uruguay, USA, Vietnam, Belarus, Cyprus.
