Abstract:
Student teachers' well-being is particularly important in times of teacher shortage. To prevent student dropout and promote students' well-being, demands and resources within university teacher education need to be identified. Demands like workload or time pressure can lead to emotional exhaustion in the long-term, while resources like emotional support may foster well-being. By conducting a quantitative, longitudinal study on 903 student teachers from German universities, we investigate the relationship between the emotional support of peers (as a resource) and emotional exhaustion (an indicator of well-being). In addition, we conducted a qualitative study to analyze demands as possible reasons for dropout during teacher education. Latent change score models indicate that emotional exhaustion first increases and then slightly decreases over the course of three semesters. Emotional support by peers remains stable over time. The bivariate latent change model suggests that social support is not a predictor of later emotional exhaustion. The qualitative study analyzed three main dropout intentions: performance problems, lack of study motivation, and study conditions. Especially study conditions at university can be adjusted and act as a resource to increase students' well-being. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Using a sample of third grade elementary school students (N = 514), we tested a generalized internal/external frame of reference (GI/E) model using math, verbal, and physical education achievements as predictors, and math, verbal, and physical ability self-concepts and intrinsic values as outcomes. Therefore, the present study adds to the generalizability of the GI/E model across age and to the investigation of dimensional comparisons. The findings replicated the assumptions of the classic internal/external frame of reference model by showing positive within-domain relations between math (verbal) achievements and self-concepts, but negative cross-domain relations. Positive within-domain and negative cross-domain achievement relations were also found for math and verbal intrinsic values. The findings further showed positive relations between achievement and self-concept as well as between achievement and intrinsic value within the physical ability domain. In addition, the findings demonstrated a negative relation between math achievement and physical ability self-concept and between German achievement and physical ability intrinsic value. Hence, the findings indicated that dimensional comparisons operate across academic and non-academic domains. Boys and girls did not differ with regard to the relations among constructs as depicted in the GI/E model. However, differential mean levels of the constructs were found for boys and girls. Abstract (english):
Two studies with German secondary school students extend the internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model to multiple school subjects, by including history and politics as social studies subjects. Study 1 assessed students' self-concepts and achievements related to math, German, history, English (students' first foreign language), and physics. The cross-paths leading from history self-concept to math and verbal achievements and those leading from math and verbal achievements to history self-concept were non-significant arguing against the operation of dimensional comparison processes between math and verbal achievements in the formation of history self-concept. Study 2 included measures for students' self-concepts and achievements in math, English, physics, and politics as well as a history achievement. Politics achievement and self-concept were unrelated to math, English, and physics achievements and self-concepts. History achievement was positively related with politics self-concept. This finding indicates dimensional comparison processes leading to assimilation effects within the domain of social studies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Based on a sample of Year 1 vocational students (N = 962) in China, the study presented in this chapter aimed to (1) test the generalizability of the classic internal/external (I/E) frame of reference model of academic self-concept (Marsh, 1986) to vocational students and (2) extend the classic I/E model by incorporating recent developments of the twofold multidimensional structure of academic self-concept (i.e., its domain-specific structure and a further separation between competence-affect components within each domain). Structural equation modeling analyses for testing the I/E model show that paths from math and Chinese achievements to corresponding domains of self-concept were positive and significant, whereas cross-paths to nonmatching self-concept domains were negatively significant. A further analysis by separating competence and affect components within math and Chinese self-concepts reveals that paths from math and Chinese achievements to matching affect components were stronger than those to competence components. This interesting finding is discussed in light of the Chinese cultural model of learning. Implications of our findings for the I/E model, self-concept research, and practice are also discussed. Abstract (english):
This study aimed to address two underexplored research questions regarding support for the separation between competence and affect self-perceptions due to differential relations to outcome criteria. First, it is tested whether higher relations between affect self-perceptions and effort than between competence self-perceptions and effort can also be found for elementary school students. Second, this study examines the generalizability of such differential outcome relations to the verbal domain. Students' competence and affect self-perceptions in math and verbal domains and self-reported effort at school were measured in a sample of 156 German 3rd-grade elementary school students. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated separate factors for competence and affect self-perceptions in both math and verbal domains. Latent regression analyses showed that affect self-perceptions were more highly related to effort than competence self-perceptions. With these findings, the present study adds further support to the commonly accepted separation between competence and affect self-perceptions by demonstrating their differential relations to effort and extending this finding to elementary school students and the verbal domain.
