Abstract (english):
Does plasticity contribute to adult cognitive development, and if so, in what ways? The vague and overused concept of plasticity makes these controversial questions difficult to answer. In this article, we refine the notion of adult cognitive plasticity and sharpen its conceptual distinctiveness. According to our framework, adult cognitive plasticity is driven by a prolonged mismatch between functional organismic supplies and environmental demands and denotes the brain's capacity for anatomically implementing reactive changes in behavioral flexibility (i.e., the possible range of performance and function). We distinguish between 2 interconnected but distinct cognitive outcomes of adult cognitive plasticity: alterations in processing efficiency and alterations in representations. We demonstrate the usefulness of our framework in evaluating and interpreting (a) increments in frontal brain activations in the course of normal aging and (b) the effects of cognitive training in adulthood and old age. Finally, we outline new research questions and predictions generated by the present framework and recommend design features for future cognitive-training studies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Using a negative priming paradigm, the authors tested whether age-related interference effects are due to age differences in perceptual distractibility or in resolving conceptual competition. In samples of 40 younger adults ( aged 22-34) and 40 older adults (aged 58-76), the authors found a greater reduction in processing speed for older than for younger adults in trials in which targets were superimposed with distracting objects as compared to single-target trials. When trials were paralleled for perceptual features, that is, when single-target trials were supplemented with nonsense distractors, the age effect became nonsignificant. The results suggest that age-related interferenceeffects are primarily due to age differences in perceptual distractibility. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Das in diesem Artikel vorgestellt Dissertationsvorhaben beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, ob und inwiefern Ontologien, wie sie derzeit im Semantic Web entstehen, als Wissensstrukturen für die Generierung von Query Expansion- Termen in Information Retrieval-Systemen dienen können. Dies wird anhand der Beispieldomäne der Erziehungswissenschaften untersucht. Erste Ergebnisse unterstützten die bereits vielfach belegte Erkenntnis, dass Query Expansion den Recall steigern kann. Zukünftige Experimente zielen darauf ab, die Effektivität von thesaurus- und ontologiebasierter Query Expansion zu vergleichen, nützliche Expansionsterme für die Domäne der Erziehungswissenschaften zu identifizieren und den Nutzen verschiedener ontologischer Relationen als Expansionsterme für verschiedene Arten von Queries und für verschiedene Query Expansion-Modi zu untersuchen.(DIPF/ Autor)
Abstract (english):
This thesis outline investigates the question whether and how ontologies such as the ones currently evolving in the Semantic Web can serve as knowledge structures for the generation of query expansion terms in information retrieval systems. This issue is examined using a specific example domain, namely educational research. Initial results support the already well-researched finding that query expansion can increase recall. Subsequent experiments will focus on comparing the effectiveness of thesaurus and ontology-based query expansion, on identifying ontological relationships which are especially useful for the generation of query expansion terms in the domain of educational research, and on evaluating the usefulness of different ontological relationships as expansion terms for different types of queries, as well as for different query expansion modes.( DIPF/Autor)

Im Semantic Web spielen Ontologien eine wichtige Rolle als Mittel zur Verknüpfung und semantischen Integration von verteilten Daten im Web. Diese Prozesse können vereinfacht werden, wenn die dem Semantic Web zu Grunde liegenden Ontologien bereits bei der Modellierung bestehende Ontologien integrieren. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt Strategien für die Erstellung solcher integrierten Ontologien, fasst einige Richtlinien für diesen Prozess zusammen und stellt Modellierungserfahrungen aus einem Anwendungsfall vor, in dem eine integrierte Forschungskontext- Ontologie erstellt wird. Abstract (english):
In the Semantic Web, ontologies play an important role as a means to enable theinterlinking and the semantic integration of distributed Web data. These processes can besimplified if the underlying ontologies are modeled by integrating already existing SemanticWeb ontologies. This paper describes strategies for building such integrated ontologies, summarizes some guidelines for this process and presents modeling experiences from a usecase in which an integrated research context ontology is created. Abstract (english):
This article deals with the question which criteria make up a Semantic Web application. It will be shown that not all applications that make use of Semantic Web technologies actively contribute to the realization of the Semantic Web vision. In order to illustrate this, several exemplary applications are presented. They employ Semantic Web technologies mainly for goals that are rather independent from the Semantic Web vision. Nevertheless, the development of such applications may in the long run even promote the evolution of the Semantic Web, as will be explained in the course of this article. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract:
Dieser Beitrag beschreibt das Vorhaben, Semantic Web-Technologien für den Aufbau eines ontologiebasierten Forschungsführers einzusetzen. Heterogene, verteilte Datenquellen des Informationszentrums Bildung sollen auf diese Weise semantisch integriert, angereichert und über entsprechende Recherchemöglichkeiten zugänglich gemacht werden. Die einzelnen Schritte zur Umsetzung des geplanten Projekts werden vorgestellt, wobei insbesondere auf zu erwartende Mehrwerte gegenüber der aktuellen Datenquellennutzung eingegangen wird. Abstract (english):
This paper elaborates on the objective to use semantic web technologies for the implementation of an ontology based research guide. It aims at a semantic integration and enrichment of heterogeneous, distributed data sources of the Information Center for Education, thus making them accessible through appropriate retrieval functionalities. The individual steps of the planned project are presented with a particular focus on the added value that can be expected in comparison with the current use of the data sources. (DIPF/Author)
