Abstract:
The 2nd Annual WPI-UMASS-UPENN EDM Data Minng Challenge required contestants to predict efficient test-taking based on log data. In this paper, we describe our theory-driven and psychometric modeling approach. For feature engineering, we employed the Log-Normal Response Time Model for estimating latent person speed, and the Generalized Partial Credit Model for estimating latent person ability. Additionally, we adopted an n-gram feature approach for event sequences. For training a multi-label classifier, we distinguished inefficient test takers who were going too fast and those who were going too slow, instead of using the provided binary target label. Our best-performing ensemble classifier comprised three sets of low-dimensional classifiers, dominated by test-taker speed. While our classifier reached moderate performance, relative to competition leaderboard, our approach makes two important contributions. First, we show how explainable classifiers could provide meaningful predictions if results can be contextualized to test administrators who wish to intervene or take action. Second, our re-engineering of test scores enabled us to incorporate person ability into the estimation. However, ability was hardly predictive of efficient behavior, leading to the conclusion that the target label's validity needs to be questioned. The paper concludes with tools that are helpful for substantively meaningful log data mining. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Student achievement has become a major criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of schooling and teaching. However, valid interpretation and use of test scores in educational contexts require more detailed information about the degree to which the applied test instruments are appropriate to evaluate the intended educational and interventional effects. Instructional sensitivity is the psychometric property of tests or single items to capture effects of classroom instruction. Although instructional sensitivity is a prerequisite for valid inferences on teaching effectiveness, sensitivity is rather assumed than verified in practice. The aim of this chapter is to improve the understanding of instructional sensitivity and its measurement in educational intervention research. Specifically, it first provides an overview of the theoretical framework and relevance of instructional sensitivity. Then, different approaches of measuring instructional sensitivity are outlined and procedures of implementing instructional sensitivity in educational intervention studies are introduced and contrasted with each other. Finally, the role of time spans is discussed and modelling change for short-time and long-time effects in pretest-posttest-follow-up designs is addressed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Students' performance in assessments is regularly attributed to more or less effective teaching. Valid interpretation requires that outcomes are affected by instruction to a significant degree. Hence, instruments need to be capable of detecting effects of instruction, that is, instruments need to be instructionally sensitive. However, empirical investigation of the instructional sensitivity of tests and items is seldom in practice. In consequence, in many cases, it remains unclear whether teaching was ineffective or the instrument was insensitive. While there is a living discussion on the instructional sensitivity of tests and items in the USA, the concept of instructional sensitivity is rather unknown in German-speaking countries. Thus, the present study aims at (a) introducing the concept of instructional sensitivity, (b) providing an overview on current approaches of measuring instructional sensitivity, and (c) identifying further research directions. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Karasek's demand-control model and the corresponding Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) have greatly influenced research conducted on psychosocial factors at work and health. In our questionnaire on structural conditions (StrukStud), we applied the JCQ to the situation of university students in order to explore the contribution of the Karasek dimensions on outcomes such as psychological distress. In 4 studies of 732 university students (Psychology, Teaching, Social Work, Business Law, and Educational Science) we assessed the demand-control dimensions (StrukStud), stress (Heidelberg Stress Index [HEI-STRESS] and Perceived Stress Questionnaire), and related constructs such as study satisfaction and physical health complaints. Initial findings on reliability and validity are presented. Results demonstrate the psychometric properties of the StrukStud and its potential to explain study-related stress. For the German-speaking countries, the StrukStud is the first economic self-report measure for psychological demands and decision latitude in the context of higher education.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Focusing on Germany, this article presents results from the international comparison of fifteen-year-olds in collaborative problem solving and a cross validation of the scaling in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015. A new computer-based test was used requesting students to solve a problem jointly with simulated group members. Data from collaborative problem solving of fifteen-year-olds (n = 124,994) in 51 countries were assessed. The German mean competence level (525 points) is a quarter standard deviation above the OECD average (500 points) and a quarter standard deviation below the OECD's top performing country Japan (552 points). In all participating countries, girls outperform boys. While the percentage of top-performing students in Germany is comparable to proportions in the best-performing OECD countries, 21% of the students in Germany only reach competence level I or below, twice as many as in Japan. National results are presented as well as empirical evidence on the quality of the test, which is critically discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Cross-cultural differences in Social Desirability (SD) could be partly due to the nonequivalence of constructs, items, or other challenges of cross-cultural research. We tested to what extent a Mexican, indigenous scale of SD, capturing both positive and negative features of SD, would be useful in other countries. Data were collected in convenience samples in eight countries (Argentina, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Lebanon, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Spain) in order to test the psychometric accuracy and invariance of the factor structure. Values of Tucker's factor congruence coefficients (gauging invariance) and tests of the similarity of the cross-country similarity of Cronbach's alpha (gauging internal consistency) revealed that SD, as measured by this indigenous list, is stable and comparable across cultures. The results are interpreted in a conceptual framework in which SD is viewed as a culturally embedded communication style that people use to integrate successfully into their groups. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This book addresses challenges in the theoretically and empirically adequate assessment of competencies in educational settings. It presents the scientific projects of the priority program "Competence Models for Assessing Individual Learning Outcomes and Evaluating Educational Processes," which focused on competence assessment across disciplines in Germany. The six-year program coordinated 30 research projects involving experts from the fields of psychology, educational science, and subject-specific didactics. The main reference point for all projects is the concept of "competencies," which are defined as "context-specific cognitive dispositions that are acquired and needed to successfully cope with certain situations or tasks in specific domains" (Koeppen et al., 2008, p. 62). The projects investigate different aspects of competence assessment: The primary focus lies on the development of cognitive models of competencies, complemented by the construction of psychometric models based on these theoretical models. In turn, the psychometric models constitute the basis for the construction of instruments for effectively measuring competencies. The assessment of competencies plays a key role in optimizing educational processes and improving the effectiveness of educational systems. This book contributes to this challenging endeavor by meeting the need for more integrative, interdisciplinary research on the structure, levels, and development of competencies. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This study illustrates an integrative psychometric framework to investigate two sources of construct-relevant multidimensionality in answers to the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC). Using a sample of 2,353 German students attending Grades 3 to 6, we contrasted: (a) first-order versus hierarchical and bifactor models to investigate construct-relevant multidimensionality related to the hierarchical nature of multidimensional self-conceptions and (b) confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) and exploratory structural equation models (ESEM) to investigate construct-relevant multidimensionality related to the assessment of conceptually related constructs. The bifactor-ESEM solution provided the best fit, suggesting the presence of both sources of construct-relevant psychometric multidimensionality. The results supported measurement invariance of the SPPC across gender and grade level and showed latent mean differences mostly supporting results from previous research. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
A drawback of video-based analysis of teaching lies in its high cost in terms of time and money. The present study examines the possibility of assessing instructional features on the basis of very short observations, respectively first impressions. We applied the so-called thin-slices technique: This procedure which uses judgements based on first impressions has shown high reliability and validity in the assessment of various psychological constructs. In two studies untrained raters judged 37 elementary school teachers regarding three dimensions of instructional quality based on 30-second randomly selected sequences from full classroom videos. Both showed very high interrater reliabilities. While descriptive analyses indicate a rather undifferentiated judging process, multilevel regression analyses predicting students' achievement gain via ratings of instructional quality indicate a certain predictive validity of first impressions.
